Trail Assist founder Christian Hon zoomed on in and told us about the program to assist bike trail riders with flat tires. He has partnered with several Missouri Park Districts to provide pole mounted boxes along several trails and streets that contain the basics for flat tire replacement. Each waterproof box and contents cost about $20. He would like to extend this program to some of our Madco trails. Christian observed that with the significant Covid driven increase in biking, the need for this service continues to grow.More info can be found @ the Trail Assist
Once again, we had 22 members under Julia's wet roof and 7 members checking in via Zoom.
Opening duties were handled by SandyS, PaulH and RodneyD
Early arrivals included Prez Chris, DarrenC, AllenH and VirgilM.
A roast beast entree was featured on our veggie free buffet. Whipped taters and brown gravy, rolls, salad, cookies and sugar-free pie were the other items. ChrisH was very impressed by the size of the salad bowl. When will Rotary g-beans return? We assume it will be at the same meal that fried chicken appears to welcome MarkS back from FL.
One think about having a birthday on St. Patty's day, there's no shortage of folks willing to help you celebrate. Birthday greeting to JeanK and LauraW.

RodneyD offered this Covid related observation. Some of his church members would rather stay in the parking lot to listen to the service on their FM radio. The audio is better.
Virtual Color Run registration is under way. Adults are $30, kids are $25. The event is scheduled for the June 4-6 weekend. It's time to start promoting this great event. The last Color Run (2019) netted $7000. Here's the link to sign up https://bit.ly/3kOlgrp

Allen anticipates the East Alton Village Board May meeting moving right along once Darren places his firearm on the meeting table. Just kidding.
LoriP has your pack of 10 Baseball Mania tickets. Each ticket sells for $10. Complete the bottom of each ticket and return with payment to her. We keep 65% of each ticket sold. The contest begins in July and runs 10 weeks. There are 35 weekly winners, from $10 to $250. If you win, look for a check in the mail. Online versions will be available soon.
Hard to believe, or maybe not...for the second consecutive week "lucky" TommieM and "lucky" LoriP had their 50-50 ticket chosen. Paul won the scratch-off. Oh, and did we mention that all three were seated at the same table? The $43 jackpot rolled.

Most time zones around the world differ from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in increments of full hours. However, there are a handful of places that are offset by 30 or 45 minutes instead. The only such place in North America is the island of Newfoundland, which adheres to Newfoundland Standard Time — it’s 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Standard Time (observed in the rest of Canada’s Maritime provinces) and 1.5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, observed in cities like New York City and Toronto. The unusual time zone exists because of the island’s location on the eastern edge of the Atlantic Time Zone. When time zones were created, Newfoundland was a separate dominion from the rest of Canada and able to determine its own time zone. In 1963, the local government tried to change it to be on the hour in order to conform with the rest of the Newfoundland and Labrador province, but the proposal met steep opposition from residents, who take pride in the island’s offbeat time zone.

The three Rotary Club joint meeting would be held on April 27th at the Bethalto Senior Citizens Center. Catered by Mother's. All fines and 50-50 receipts would benefit the Bethalto Boys & girls Club.
The Wood River club was serving up lunch leftovers for $5 a container. Bags of Green Mountain coffee were available for $10.
RickH returned from his trip to Australia and New Zealand and shared stories about the massive earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand while he was there. Money collected at the meeting would be sent to RI for the relief effort.
The Rotary Leader Institute would be held in Alton on March 26th.
JeanK refused to pick the Queen of Hearts and left $554 on the table. meanwhile @ the East Alton club BradL and MarkA whiffed on the $92 50-50.
Potential new East Alton member Mark Allison and Dick Bell were in the house.
PattiA paid a happy fine in honor of her daughter's hockey championship in Pittsburgh.
Coach JoeS invited everyone to see Marquette play baseball at Busch on May 7th.
SteveD served as the meeting greeter at the Wood River meeting.

ShelterBox and Rotary stand with Women after disaster

For over 20 years, Rotary and ShelterBox have worked together to support families with a place to call home after disaster. ShelterBox teams work with disaster-hit families around the world, offering emergency shelter and other essential aid to support them in rebuilding their lives. This International Women’s Day we are sharing stories of the hardships, resilience and courage of the women ShelterBox and Rotary have worked with.
Due to pre-existing gender inequalities, women and girls are disproportionately affected by disasters. Following disaster and conflict, women experience higher death rates, increased gender-based violence, loss of livelihoods, and difficulties accessing education. The strength and resilience of women therefore plays a pivotal role in their recovery process. Women are often amongst the first responders to a crisis and are central to rebuilding their families and communities.
Susan lives on the island of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean. Before Cyclone Harold hit last year, Susan had a beautiful family home where her family and community took joy in coming together. She is a pillar of her community and an active member of the Community Disaster and Climate Change Committee (CDCCC.) In the first two days following the cyclone, Susan was too traumatised to work. But on the third day she began to record the cyclone’s damage and ask for government assistance. Susan played a key role in distributing vital aid materials to members of her community. Although she was mourning the loss of her family home, with the support of ShelterBox aid items, Susan is beginning to rebuild, and her community is starting to recover.
Shelter is the foundation of recovery – when you have shelter, you can start thinking about the future. ShelterBox provides women with the essential tools and training to rebuild their homes. This enables women to have a safe and private space to care for their families, continue with their education, and resume their livelihoods.
In 2014, Esther’s family was violently attacked when Boko Haram fighters stormed into their village in Nigeria. After witnessing the tragic death of her parents and brothers, Esther fled alongside many other girls in her situation. Esther is now 23 years old and lives in Minawao camp in Cameroon.
In Cameroon, ShelterBox has supported 15,000 families like Esther’s with the essential aid they need to start their journey toward recovery. The support Esther received helped her to participate in a sewing training organised on camp for young women. Today, Esther is one of the most popular dressmakers in the camp and she has ambitions to expand her business in the future.
‘I want to become a famous dressmaker not only here in Minawao, I want to see people wearing my clothes out of the camp and even in my country’ (Nigeria.)
Together in partnership, ShelterBox and Rotary have enabled thousands of women like Esther and Susan to take back control of their lives and rebuild their homes. Their stories demonstrate how the strength and resilience of women plays a vital role in the recovery process for their families and communities following disaster.
