NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
FIRESIDE CHAT WITH JOE

  • Joe has just celebrated his first anniversary as mayor. He presented a "fireside chat" on five East Alton topics: Citizen's Bank building, Eastgate Plaza, 911 consolidation, Dynergy plant closing and the East Alton History Committee. His presentation was not recorded.
  • For the second week in a row we had 19 members in the house. The early arrivals included Allen, Lori and Joe. Fred, Paul and Chris H were among the laties.
  • Several folks remarked that it "smelled like fired chicken". How right they were. Joining the yard bird were mashed taters 'n gravy, g-beans, salad and cookies.
  • Lori could have been sitting in row 12 at the Cardinal game. Joe's seats weren't quite as good. We're glad they chose to shun the Cardinal Nation and break bread with us.
  • Wendell wished everyone a Happy Cinco de Mayo and reminded all that the date is not the Mexico equivalent of our 4th of July. It honours the Mexican victory over the French in 1862. The Margaritas' were chilling. Salud!
  • Cory returned, much to the delight of sub-treasured Mark 1.
  • Paul's "better half" Chris was in the house as was Sherry's mum Sharon.
  • Do you remember when Lou Holtz "spoke" to our club?
  • Allen has some archive photos he wants to share.
  • Joe reminds everyone that when running the base paths, don't forget to turn left.
  • Fred, Sherry and Roger provided the opening duties. Joe closed the meeting by knocking the bell off its base.
  • Rhonda was last seen passing out Paul Harris ballots to everyone. Don't forget to submit your vote. The current PH folks meet after the meeting on the 19th to select.
  • Lori shared that 105 tickets have been sold with a net of $682. We have the potential to net $2000 if all tickets are sold.
  • Sherry reported that your Rotary ballgame tickets will be available soon.
  • We had a "fine free" day after Roger realized that that SAA Bill would not be at the meeting. Let's keep this info between us girls. We don't want Bill to get any ideas for next week.
  • Rhonda indicated that Kyle Anderson has submitted a grant on our behalf for the Wann memorial.
  • Roger told us that there are a couple of college scholarships available via Rotary. The district 6460 web site has the details. Link here http://www.rotarydistrict6460.org/
  • Mark 3 failed to announced that he is a newly minted grandpa. Congrats!
  • The 50-50 jackpot was left safely in the bag by Fred and Sharon. Cory cleared his scratch-off to reveal???
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

  • I ate salad for dinner! Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really, just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. And sausage and pepperoni. OK, fine, It was a pizza. I ate a pizza.
  • I did a week's worth of cardio...after walking into a spider web.
  • I don't mean to brag but...I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

POPE FRANICS GREETS RI PRESIDENT RAVINDRAN

POPE WELCOMES ROTARY TO JUBILEE AUDIENCE

Thousands of Rotary members, motivated by a special invitation from Pope Francis, gathered at the Vatican in Rome on Saturday April 30th to celebrate a message of compassion, inclusiveness, and service to humanity.

At midmorning, the group -- numbering some 9,000 members from 80 countries -- made its way through the congested streets of Rome, past the tight security surrounding St. Peter's Square, and settled into the area reserved for Rotary in front of St. Peter's Basilica for the Jubilee audience.

Francis, a 79-year-old Argentine, urged the crowd of more than 100,000, which included members of the police and armed forces from around the world, "to build a culture of peace, security, and solidarity around the world."

His message of peace resonated with Rotary members, including R. Asokan from Tamil Nadu, India. "His message about peace is about accepting. Rotary, which accepts all walks of life, can carry his message to all our clubs, therefore carrying his message to all our communities," says Asokan. THE BOTTOM LINE

Traveler complaints about airlines jumped 34 percent last year to the highest level since 2000, despite data showing more flights arrived on time and fewer bags were lost. Virgin America ranked as the best domestic airline for the 4th year in a row.-Associate Press

Budget cuts at the IRS have trimmed the number of audits the agency conducts. Last year, the IRS audited 1.2 million tax returns out of a total of 147 million, the fewest in a decade. If you made less than $200,000, you chance of being audited in 2015 was just 0.76 percent.-FoxBusiness.com
