MARCH TO SPRING ISSUE
MARCH 18, 2017
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
that's a winner!
Look for the next Banner on April Fool's day. There's a joke there somewhere.
Thursday's program presenter was Carrie Cope. She is the Director of Marketing for The United Methodist Village in Godfrey. It sounds like a great place. Take a look at the video and decide for yourself.
A huge Rotary fist pump and standing O to Rhonda for her Cosmic Bingo hard work. It looks like we and the Wood River Rotary Club will split a net of about $7800. Thanks to all the members who sold tickets, made baskets and worked the fun event. Look for the next edition to take place on March 10th 2018. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the event, let Rhonda know.
We offer a sharp salute to Brad 2 for his 21 years of military service. He is now officially retired. We thank him for his outstanding service to our country.
Count Bill, Sherry, Allen and Virgil among the early arrivals. Mark 2, Brad 1, Dave and Paul were amongst "the finalists".
Karen returned as our favorite server. She may, or may not, be returning to take care of us every Thursday. Notice the change in drinking glasses? The buffet line included chicken 'n rice, ham, cheesy noodles, mixed veggies, salad and a dessert called chocolate chess? Sherry claims that Sandy ate two of these. No one else seemed to notice.
Allen returned from "training" last week, but will be undergoing additional orientation next Thursday. Lori was MIA, but was spotted via Facebook in Jupiter, FL.
We got to glimpse Mark 3. It seems he has been spending the winter in...Washington D.C. We hope to see him on a regular basis real soon. Rumor has it that our "original" Mark will be returning from his winter Disney roost this week.
We welcomed Bethalto Rotarian and former District Governor (last century, 91-92) Clyde Jones. It was nice to see his smilin' face.
Pat was busy getting his St. Patty's Day game face on.
Will Bill really call Sandy's hubby? I would not bet against it.
Congrats to Wendell's wife Deisy who will become a naturalized U.S. citizen during a ceremony in Alton on the 29th.
Rick had a make-up from the Miramar-Pines club in Florida. He tried to makeup two additional times but was foiled in his efforts.
Sherry appreciates the smaller things in life, like hot rolls.
SAA Bill and "fine lady" Sandy worked the room for all available $$$. Wendell reported a Tom "what time is it" Coles spotting. Trivia tropics included Frankie and Johnny, female hysteria, James Madison and Ricky Craven.
Opening duties were provided by Sandy, Paul and Bill.
Matt won the 50-50 $132 (+/-) jackpot. Chris 2 got the rest of the deck. Sandy won a buck with the scratch-off.
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

A larger than life youth exchange experience
By Joel Dzuba, Rotary Exchange Student from Ontario, Canada, to Lower Saxony, Germany
It would be impossible to pick a favourite memory from my exchange in Germany due to the sheer number of opportunities I had and dreams I lived. From sailing in the Baltic Sea, to walking in the North Sea, to swimming in the Mediterranean, there are simply too many experiences to pick a favourite.
One of the many stories that I do love to share, however, was when I was celebrating my 18th birthday during our year-end European Tour. All the exchange students had gathered on the beach at night to watch the stars in the little town of Portofino, Italy, and eventually I found myself sitting back to back on a rock with a Brazilian student, a Russian student, and a Taiwanese student. In all of my life, no other moment has ever made me feel so paradoxical as that night.
On the one hand, I felt so incredibly small when I realized where I was sitting and with whom I was sitting; as I was just a boy from Ontario who suddenly found himself halfway across the world, with people who would maybe only have a one in a billion chance of meeting together in any other circumstance. And yet, on the other hand I had never felt so large in comparison to the vastness of the world, and the borders as I had pictured them. The world suddenly felt like it had shrunk, and that there was nowhere that was out of my reach anymore. To continue reading, link here http://bit.ly/2kgQbiD

THE HORSE RAFFLE
A young man named Donald bought a horse from a farmer for $250. The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day.
The next day, the farmer drove up to Donald's house and said, "Sorry, son, but I have some bad news. The horse died."
Donald replied, "Well, then just give me my money back."
The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."
Donald said, "Ok, then, just bring me the dead horse."
The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?"
Donald said, "I'm going to raffle him off."
The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead horse!"
Donald said, "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead."
A month Later, the farmer met up with Donald and asked, "What happened with that dead horse?"
Donald said, "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at five dollars a piece and made a profit of $2495."
The farmer said, "Didn't anyone complain?"
Donald said, "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his five dollars back."
