We played a round of "Get to Know You" bingo on Thursday. PattiA was the first to BINGO. What we learned-There's a lot of folks who prefer cats to dogs, liver & onions are not at all popular, DaveA went on a blind date and RhondaB likes to dance.

There were 25 members in the house on Thursday. First to arrive included a pair of surnamed "P's"- BillP, LoriP and RodneyD.
On Thursday you received an email from Lori with info from PattiA about Riverbend East branded merch. Order and pay online. By using the included link you can find an expanded list of items that can be personalized. Items that you order will display the club specific universal Rotary branding logo as shown in the email. Deadline to order is September 9th. Happy shopping!
Happy Rotary anniversaries to PaulH (40 years), RodC (39), VirgilM (14) and EmilyW (3).
RhondaB and ChrisH each won $10 in Baseball Mania bucks.
The lunch buffet featured golden fried chicken, cheezy garlic mashed taters, rolls, salad and cake.
Friday Night Lights kicked off last night. Best of luck this season to the EA-WR Oilers and Highland Bulldogs. (The head coaches are the spouses of Lindsey and Emily.) We also hope The Shells have a fine season.
Things were busy @ Julia's. Chef Bob was also hosting a funeral luncheon and was excited about the YWCA Women of Distinction event taking place on Friday evening.
In addition to being early arrivals BillP and RodneyD both headed to the funeral luncheon before heading north to our meeting room. You just can't keep ministers away from an opportunity to mingle. JimH lobbied Bill to give him a meeting credit for attending the funeral luncheon, maybe not, but, we hope to see Jim in the house real soon.
RhondaB told us that we are on target for Soapbox Racing crosswalk staffing. She also led a discussion about holding a Pints for Polio event on Sunday October 24th. We agreed to host our event at JJ Thermos on that date. Times and details to follow. Dollars raised will be used to support the RI global effort to eradicate Polio.
MarkS reported that Madison County Transit will consider our proposal for a bus shelter. He also announced that he has "volunteered" to chair our Chili Supper on October 15th. It will be held @ RHS before and during the football grudge match between EAWR and RHS. Everyone will receive some tickets to sell for this event.
MarkV now knows why there's an Alton Memorial ambulance stationed at Spencer T on hot days. We present evidence in the names of Marks Speciale and Allison golfing on a steamy afternoon.
PaulH reported that RodC is recovering at home after a low blood pressure induced fall. he'll be back in action shortly.
Coming right up (in 954 days) will be the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Carbondale will be in totality for 4 minutes 8 seconds. See you there!
BillP was able to confirm that Busch Stadium was indeed HOT on Wednesday afternoon.
LeonardB served as the SAA and fined JoeS for the nice Telegraph story about his son Anthony and their shared love of Litchfield dining. He also sort of fined AllenH and PattiA.
Opening duties were handled by Prez Lindsey, RickH and BillP
Post-nooners included PattiA, RhondaB and JoeS.

Canada has 125,567 miles of coastline, stretching from the North Atlantic Ocean through the Arctic in the far northern Nunavut territory, into the Pacific Ocean in western British Columbia. Indonesia may be a surprise in second place with 61,567 miles, until you remember the country consists of over 17,000 islands. In third place is the large Scandinavian country of Norway; its irregular coastline stretches 36,122 miles north into its namesake sea. Rounding out the top five is Russia with 23,396 miles, and the Philippines at 22,549 miles. Like Indonesia, the Philippines is an archipelago, which gives it an edge — literally — in terms of coastline.

Upcoming events for the WR club included the Red Cross Blood Drive, Rotary Raffle and the Rotary Quad Club meeting-WR, EA, Bethalto and Riverbend.
CoryG presented the EA meeting speaker, Melissa Crockett from the Jacoby Arts Center.
Yip-Yip ingredient donations were being accepted by the WR club. They would be sold at the upcoming Downtown Fall Festival.
PatB presented a make-up from the Florissant club at the EA meeting.
ScottL was coordinating the WR club's sponsorship of the local NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program.
PaulH led the 4-Way at the EA meeting while BradP was out of the room on a phone call.
The WR club presented a $2,000 check to EA member WendellR as their portion of the Barranquilla, Columbia cleft palate project for children.
ErinP was looking for scholarship interviewers.
JohnP gladly paid a Happy Fine in honor of his recent wedding anniversary to wife Julie.
MarkS tried his best to find the joker in the new card deck at the EA meeting. Nope!
Substitute SAA GeorgeT accepted a Happy Fine donation from PattyA and fined those who did not participate in the Wood River Triathlon.

GROWING MEMBERSHIP WITH ROTARY ALUMNI

I am often asked “How do I grow my club?” or “How do I find members for my new club?” I have a great answer – Rotary alumni. These past participants of Rotary programs are an often-overlooked source of potential members with a built-in understanding of who we are and a past experience with how we take action to serve to change lives.
Alumni represent an incredible network of leaders engaged in service around the world. Clubs sometimes think about inviting them as speakers or using them as extra hands for service projects. But if we take the time, effort, and willingness to remove a few of the barriers that keep them from joining, we can experience the benefits of their insight and talent to grow Rotary.
Let me give you three powerful real-life examples.
The Rotary Club of Cultural Exchange Enthusiasts
Five years ago, this club formed as an e-club, but decided to rebrand itself around a cause to address declining membership. The club president at the time had taken part in a Rotary Youth Exchange and was active in a Rotex alumni association – Rotary Youth Exchange alumni who act as intermediaries between Rotary members and Youth Exchange students to improve their exchange experience.
If you have ever been to a Rotary meeting that involved youth exchange students, you know the energy and fun they bring to meetings. In the past 16 months, the club has grown from five to 13 members tapping into this pool of Rotex alumni. The club publicizes weekly speakers on Facebook and their website, encouraging members and non-members to attend the virtual meetings, which are recorded and posted for future view. The meeting vibe is low-key, friendly, and positive. Annual dues are kept affordable.
