4-WAY TEST ISSUE
October 8, 2016
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
DANI IN RED'S RED SWEATS
22 members and a special guest (Our exchange student Daniela, "call me Dani") dined on fabulous fried yard bird, whipped taters 'n gravy, g-beans, salad and cake.
Arriving at 11:45 were Sherry and Dani, closely followed by Allen and Virgil. Post-noon arrivals included Lindsey, Paul, Joe and Mark 2.
The Turkey Fund can made it's initial 2016 appearance. All donation will be given to Operation Blessing to use during the holiday season to feed the less fortunate. The can will make a weekly appearance until November 17th.The first week garnered $67 in donations. Speaking of Blessing's Executive Director, Virginia Kirkpatrick, the Wood River club recently honored her as a Paul Harris Fellow. Well played Wood River. Richly deserved!
A big thanks to Lori for coordinating Baseball Mania ticket sales. You received an e-mail recap on the 3rd. We made a profit of $1735 selling 267 tickets.
There are 27 active members badges in the box. Are you unbadged?
What Rotary club has more fun than ours?
Dick returned from his floor installation job in Florida. Roger was glad to see him. We'll second that.
Wendell "Chicken Man" missed his chance to dine on his favorite meal. According to Joe, Paul came so late that he was left with the dark meat.
The 4-Way Test took a beating on Thursday.
Dani adopted one of Red's gently used sweatshirts. Very stylish. She reported that she is involved with cheerleading at Roxana.
When it matters, Sherry is on time (don't tell her minister).
Sherry will be looking for someone to replace Patty as Prez-elect. It may be Bill.
After Sherry mentioned her connection with the St. Louis County Police officer that was killed Thursday AM, Bill offered a prayer of remembrance.
Rhonda, Bill and Patty are working on plans for the Christmas program. We will gather at the Alton Sports Tap on December 15th at 6PM. Bill is exploring the possibility of our helping at Christmas Wonderland in Rock Spring Park. We would need 12 folks and earn a few hundred $$ for an evening's work.
Joe reported that the guy wanting the East Alton Library to be open 24 hours is now in prison.
Sherry and Dani are headed to the District Conference in Springfield on the 21st and 22nd. If a couple of more members join them, we would qualify for a $10,000 grant from the district that could be used for a local service project. All clubs that have at least 10% of their membership in attendance qualify for the drawing. $55 covers your registration fee.
Mark 1's new mantra is forget the Cardinals, Let's Go Blues!!
Rhonda stated that the date for the next Cosmic Bingo has been set for March 11th. Once again, we will partner with the Wood River club. Each club will retain their share of pre-event ticket sales. There will be a need for gift baskets. Put the date on your calendar.
SAA Bill recruited Patty to serve as the "Dollar Dolly". Virgil offered a standing O for Lori (and Joe, belated) for their help with the school reading program. The trivia topics included a train robbery, the 4-Way Test, Liz Taylor, Mennonites in Pennsylvania and Reggie Jackson , who represented a missed lay-up by Allen's crew.
Opening duties were provided by Mark 2, Chris 1 and Bill. He was thankful for no playoff baseball. (It may mean more $$ in the collection basket).
Brad 1 and Lori drew the cards, Randy the scratch-off. The $110 jackpot rolled.
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.
A CHRISTMAS SURPRISE?

How to promote your club by not talking about your club
By Quentin Wodon, Rotary Club of Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., USA
Sometimes the best way to gain a little attention for your club is to not talk about your club, but about other worthy groups and volunteers you are working with.
Rotary members are becoming more aware of the need to tell their Rotary story. But here’s the catch. It may be better to use local blogs or magazines in your community rather than your club or district’s own channels. This is because typically, these external sources will have a much larger readership.
But how do you get local blogs or magazine to use your stories?
Once in a while, you may have a great story to tell about your club that the blog or magazine will accept. However, they are not going to want to repeatedly publish stories on so narrow a topic. This is where talking about other organizations comes into play.
As president of my club this year, I have started to write stories about our nonprofit partners, focusing on their work, but also inserting a few lines about our Rotary club in each story. To continue reading, link herehttp://bit.ly/2dS7G7P
SMILE
A man sends a text to his next-door neighbor: "Bob, I'm sorry. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been helping myself to your wife when you're not around, probably more than you know. It's no excuse, but I don't get it at home. I can't live with the guilt any longer. I hope you will accept my sincerest apology. It won't happen again." Feeling outraged and betrayed, Bob storms into the kitchen and demands a divorce from his wife. Moment later, he gets a second text: "Really should use spellcheck! That should be 'wifi'."
