BELL RINGER ISSUE
DECEMBER 2, 2017
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
WREATH PRESENTATION
Thursday's '5th Thursday' program was Rick sharing 'this is your life'. Only two members walked out. Thankfully, there is no video.
The meal began with salad, rolls and cupcakes. Soon to follow was golden fried chicken. Big bakers were also served. No one seemed to be disappointed that Thanksgiving leftovers weren't on the serving line.
Please keep Roger's wife Bev in your prayers. Bill led a prayer at the meeting.
The snow birds are starting to stir. Orlando seems to be the current Florida destination of choice.
Christmas will find Wendell in Columbia and Rick in NYC.
Chris 1 is circulating the donation box and wish list for our adopted family. As one wag pointed out, the box is small but will allow for large donations.
Our Christmas gathering will be the evening of December 14th. We will fellowship at the Bluff City Grill on Broadway (Alton) at 6PM. You may sign-up on line or at the meeting. Dinner will be served buffet style. For easy access, park on the top level of the garage and walk directly in to the banquet facility.
Wendell's wife Deisy may be our Winter Wonderland S-Claus. Won't the grandpa and his gang be surprised. Hablar Español.
Mark 3 is now recovering from knee replacement surgery. We hope and pray for his quick return (to the basketball court).
Speaking of basketball, Chris 2 announced that the date for our '18 tournament is set for February 3rd.
Congrats to Sherry and Sandy on their election to the Township Officials of Illinois board.
Bill was sporting a nice holiday tie. It's his busy season, but he still holds out hope that he will become better organized.
Allen and Pat were the first of 21 members to arrive. They were followed by Bill and Brad 2. The rest of the post-noon lineup featured Dave, Mark 2, Brad 1 and Lindsey.
Mark 2 reported that there are only a couple of slots left on the Salvation Army bell ringing list.
Sandy is considering a run for mayor of Madison. John Hamm would be shocked!
SAA Lindsey was back and entertained shameless plugs from Dave and Randy. Trivia topics included Gerald Ford, 1900 baby names,Willie Mayes and the Philladelphia mint.
Cory was MIA, Mark 1 covered.
Brad 2 presented a lovely wreath to Joe in recognition of the recently dedicated veterans park.
Our Winter Wonderland date has been set for Sunday December 10th, 4:30-9PM. The sign-up list (job specific) is making the rounds.
Rick and Randy had a shot at the $73 jackpot. Rick pulled a 6, Randy a queen. Sandy salvaged a $2 winner with the holiday scratch-off. She promised to split it with Sherry.
Opening duties were performed by Mark 1, Brad 1 and Brad 2
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry start to December.

Why satellite clubs can bring together all ages
By Yoshisaku Shimamura, past governor of District 2830 and a member of the Rotary Club of Goshogawara Evening, Aomori, Japan
It is always the young people who build our future. At the same time, we now live in an age where life expectancy can reach 100 years. Some say 80 can be the prime of one’s life. I envision a future where younger and older generations work together to promote the ideal of compassion and cooperation that we firmly believe in Rotary. Satellite clubs may be the best way to achieve that approach. This is our story.
On 18 September, the Rotary Club of Goshogawara Evening was chartered in northern Japan. I served as advisor and helped from the club’s inception. We initially started as a satellite of an existing Rotary club. This is where members of the satellite are also members of the parent club and have two types of membership at the same time. A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?" She leaned over the counter and said, "Burrr-gerrr Kiiing."
A mom texts, "Hi! Son, what does IDK, LY, & TTYL mean?" He texts back, "I Don't Know, Love You, & Talk To You Later." The mom texts him, "It's ok, don't worry about it. I'll ask your sister, love you too."
THE BOTTOM LINE
There are more than 14,000 Dollar General stores in the U.S., outnumbering Starbucks outlets by several hundred. The discount chain will have another 1,000 stores by the end of this year, as it rapidly expands into poor, rural communities underserved by big-box stores.-Bloomberg
PayPal is now worth more than American Express. Since being spun off from eBay two years ago, the mobile-payments company has grown from $47 billion in market value to $83 billion. PayPal is also gaining ground on Wall Street giants: It is worth about $6 billion less than Morgan Stanley and $10 billion less than Goldman Sachs.-The Wall Street Journal
