       WHEN IT RAINS...ISSUE

                 APRIL 29, 2017

             NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

           18%, yes!
  • The program consisted of a moment of Zen provided by Roger, Sherry's sub for the day.
  • Early arrivals included Allen, Virgil, Wendell and Mark 1. Among the last of the 17 members in the house were Rhonda, Brad 1, Randy and Dave.
  • Dick arrived in shorts, longing for Florida's warmer climes.
  • We can report that Carole Thompson and Gregg Kirkland are continuing to improve after their respective heart procedures.
  • The food line featured mac n cheese, mashed taters, shredded chicken in BBQ sauce, Caesar salad and pie.
  • One wag wants to know if the Edwardsville school district plans to spend some of its new found tax wealth on a downtown parking garage.
  • The board meeting has been pushed to May 4th.
  • Dave reported that he  attended a career fair at Roxana High School and will provide a complete report to the board.
  • Rick subbed for "grand slam" Bill and recruited Joe as the "bucket guy". Topics included the weight of money, rich people and dumb not too bright college kids, when it comes to calculus. Trivia focused on famous movie quotes, "frankly my dear...". Joe spent a moment bragging about his children. Do you have any idea how much a hungry ex-Marine can eat? Joe was fined for his above the fold article in the Thursday Telegraph.
  • Roger told us that we have earned $99.69 to date from folks selecting us for their charity of choice in the Amazon Smile program.  (www.smile.amazon.com)
  • Does anyone remember who catered our meals when we were meeting at the Ice Arena and Regions Bank?
  • According to Lori, we have made $442 in Baseball Mania sales so far. We keep 65% of each ticket sold.
  • Opening duties were provided by Rick, Mark 1 and Dave.
  • Mark 1 and Brad 1 took a shot at the  $50 50-50 (nice symmetry there),  no luck.  No report on Roger's scratch-off results.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend. Well, at least the fine part.

Sustainable projects earn top Rotaract honors

By Sallyann Price

The 2017 Rotaract Outstanding Project Award recognized the Rotaract Club of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, for launching a three-year project to improve lives in the rural community of Ranugalla. The club, which represents Rotary District 3220 (Sri Lanka), hopes to empower residents through sustainable education and economic development initiatives.

During its first year, the club opened a library and science lab for the local school and helped students prepare for college entrance exams and careers. It also targeted infrastructure, bringing clean water into homes and building bridges to link neighborhoods flooded during the rainy season. To stimulate economic growth, the club opened a weaving cooperative for female entrepreneurs.

"Rather than initiating a project to donate materials, we thought a project to address all the issues in the village would be much more beneficial to all,” says Chamal Kuruppu, president of the University of Moratuwa Rotaract club.

Best multidistrict project went to Rotaractors in Brazil for their campaign to combat hate crimes in online communities. More than 1,000 Rotaract members from 34 Brazilian districts planned activities during World Rotaract Week in 2016, adapting the campaign to their communities — such as partnering with a university to design a workshop series on Internet hate crimes — and using their social networks to spread messages of diversity, inclusion, and peace.

This year, over 300 projects were nominated in 52 countries. The awards recognize the best single-club project, best multidistrict project, and outstanding service projects in each of six geographical regions. The best single-club project and best multidistrict project receive $500 each for future service activities and will be invited to inspire other Rotaractors at the Rotaract Preconvention in Atlanta.
