NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE

On Thursday we heard from 5 A's Executive Director Rich Jun. A's was established in 1956 and is currently located on Alby St in Alton. They are self-sustaining, using donations and adoption fees. They currently house about 60 dogs/cats and receive north of 30 calls a day from folks wanting to offer their animal(s) for adoption. As an animal is adopted they accept another for future adoption. So far this year they have found homes for 171 pets. They are a no-kill shelter and don't accept animals older than six years. A's is open 7 days a week and they are always looking for volunteers.
BradL announced that local VFW and American Legion organizations offer college scholarships that often go unclaimed. The DAV Transportation Network is in serious need of drivers to take vets to VA medical appointments. Want to assist? Call 618.296.4554.

TylerL announced that last Saturday's back to school event was a grand success, serving 214 kids.
Happy Rotary Anniversary-Prez Rodney has been a club member for four years (prior to that he was a Rotarian elsewhere for many years).

21 members feasted on roast beast, mac 'n cheeze, broccoli w/ nacho cheeze sauce, rolls, salad and cookies.
BradL arrived @ 12:23, well beyond the arrival of SandyS, ScottL and LeonardB.
SAA PattiA gave us a geography quiz. We scored 50%.
ScottL and ChrisH went looking for the joker and came away empty handed. LeonardB won the scratchie.

What’s now used as the epitome of New Yorker dialect came from “Midnight Cowboy” in 1969. Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight were walking on a crowded sidewalk and trying to time their shot perfectly to hit the walk signal. Instead of moving smoothly through the crosswalk, a taxi cut through their path. Hoffman, thinking on his feet, burst out with “Hey, I’m walkin’ here!” The improvisation flowed, and that was the take used in the final cut.

WR members heard a travel presentation from a representative of Are We There Yet. The EA members were entertained by the Conductor of the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra.
District Governor Brian Barstead visit the the WR club on September 24th.
AllenH and BradL served as the "lobby lookout crew".
The next WR club fundraiser would be the Wood River Rotary Raffle. $10 per, or 3 for $20.

LeonardB reported that there were several Rotarians at the Alton Amphitheater concert by the Beach Boys. In My Room...

Canoe introduces club to Indigenous culture

On a sunny day last September, Blake and I left our stresses behind and paddled Wave Warrior, a 39-foot-long ocean-going, fiberglass canoe designed by members of our local Indigenous community, on its inaugural journey.
Our Rotary club has been working towards Truth and Reconciliation with the local Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) for the past several years. At last year’s Peacebuilder award ceremony, we honored two Indigenous members with this award. As one of the members, Nathan Wilson, was part of the Delta School District’s Indigenous Teaching Program, all the teachers attended.
I got to talking to one of the Delta teachers and learned they wanted to purchase a fiberglass canoe for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to take on field trips together. The theme would be “Paddling Together.” As Community Service Director, I brought a proposal to the board, which was unanimously approved. The club applied for a district grant and bought the canoe. Blake and I then got to be part of the first paddling journey. Wave Warrior has a Rotary emblem on the stern.
The canoe will help non-Indigenous students learn more about canoe culture and connect them with Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The Delta Indigenous Education department has also been developing a mentorship program, Paddling Together, for students in grades five to twelve. To continue reading link herehttps://rb.gy/g3xm2
