              NEWS,NOTES & NONSENSE

            ANDREW IS PINNED BY JOE
  • Prez Patty and Joe welcomed out newest member Andrew Ambrose. He is the East Alton Regions Bank Branch Manager. Please give him a warm East Alton welcome.
  • Nate introduced the program presenter, Wood River Mayor, and Rotarian, Cheryl Maguire. She opened by complimenting Joe on his "gift of gab". Cheryl spent a few minutes talking about some of the good things going on in her berg. Among them: reduced tax bills, completing the downtown streetscape project, the new police station and the restarting of the housing development on Moreland Rd @ IL143.
  • The entree was pork in apple stuff, accompanied by carrots, boiled quartered red taters, rolls and layer cake. Wendell was not convinced that it was pork.
  • Nice to have Alex back in the house.
  • East Alton clean up day is TODAY. If you can't join us at 8:30 at the Keasler Rec Center, meet up at Eastgate and find us collecting along Highway 3. We will be around until late AM. FYI-the shoulders have been recently mowed.
  • It seems as though ChrisH found himself shut out from Wendell's table, so he planted his butt at the other front  table and then began dissing on the other table. MarkS has been tasked with having a "conversation" with Chris about this 4-way test violation.
  • Let's recognize Erin for her 12 years of club service.
  • No Cory, no worries. MarkS covered for him.
  • No Bill, no worries, there must be a Cardinal day game.
  • Where was Emily last Thursday? Taking her first vacay day of the year. Where was Patty? Enjoying her time with her grandchildren, sans parental "guidance".
  • Thanks to Allen for sharing some of his archival collection with Rick.
  • Things that make you go hmmm...it's better to be able to get your boat to the house than to get to the boat from the house.
  • Lori has your packet of 15 Baseball Mania tickets. Hardcopy and online sales options are available.
  • Opening duties were handled by ChrisH, Joe and Dave.
  • Allen brought and introduced his new pastor, Rodney Durr. Rodney was most recently serving a church in Grand Prairie, TX. He was also a Texas Rotarian and may be joining our club.
  • Allen, Darren, Emily and Alex served as the early arrival vanguard of the proud 21. Rhonda arrived just after Prez Patty banged the bell at 12:24. Other post-nooners included ChrisH, Randy, and Patty.
  • Wood River Rotarian Tommie was with us breaking bread.
  • Our Installation Dinner is scheduled for June 27th. Fellowship starts  @ 5, dinner at 5:30. Signup on line or at the meeting.
  • Dave shared a listed of Business of the Year nominees. He will have ballots next week.
  • SAA Queenie was not in the house. Prez Patty invited "a different kind of queen" to cover. Randy accepted the challenge and drafted ChrisL to serve as his $$ wingman. Randy admonished us to "not shoot the messenger", we didn't. We did contribute a bunch of $$ for the D-Day trivia questions. We celebrated MarkV's birthday. Announcements were forthcoming from Dave, Rick and Patty. Not in the house  last week? Pay a $.
  • After Emily drew a 50-50 dud, Lori picked the joker to win $38 (she last won on, wait for it, June 6, 2014). Good for her! Randy had the scratch-off.
  • That's it, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!

What is the world’s largest natural history museum?
American Museum of Natural History, New York
National Museum of Natural History, Paris
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
Natural History Museum, London

Founded in 1869, the American Museum of Natural History's 570,000 square feet extends across four city blocks and contains over 30 million artifacts and specimens. Arguably its most popular allure are its famed dinosaur exhibits. When you first enter the main entrance you will be greeted by the awe-inspiring skeletal remains of two predatory Allosaurus engaged in an attack on a hulking Barosaurus and her child. On the fourth floor, there are entire halls dedicated to these prehistoric wonders, containing classics along with lesser known dinosaurs like the Titanosaur, a massive sauropod who is so large that its head juts into the hallway outside its already-oversized room.

DATELINE:RI
EVERY WHISKEY TELLS A STORY
Rüdiger Niemz, Rotary Club of Mondseeland, Austria

“When I was invited to join Rotary, instead of giving a presentation about my job, as everyone is expected to do, I did a whiskey tasting.
“I became interested in whiskey when I was traveling a lot as a journalist. I was working on travel shows about foreign countries. You would come back very late from the filming and editing, and then you’d meet somebody at the bar. You’d start talking, and start sharing whiskey. You don’t drink whiskey to get drunk. It’s part of an exciting lifestyle.
“I got to know a lot of different places and whiskeys, and after a while I got asked to host curated tastings. I got a master’s degree in food science so I researched a lot about the history and sociology of drinks and food. Every whiskey contains a story. Every cheese contains a story.
“Life is so interesting. You cannot limit yourself. Journalists are always trying to look behind the curtain. We are trying to discover something. We are trying to get new ideas, new perspectives. I also have my master’s in philosophy. Philosophers are quite similar to journalists: We are both curious about life.
“This is the interesting thing about Rotary. You always meet exceptional people. They have different backgrounds, different experiences. It is so exciting.
“I like the worldwide view. In these days where people are developing backwards in a way that we stick to ourselves, our region, to our nationality only — where we are getting more ruthless in terms of how we treat each other in national and especially international politics — Rotary is an alternative.”
