NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE

      CAN WE TALK?
  • The program was presented Ty Bechel, a recovered opiate addict. The video of his interesting presentation has been posted. Drug addiction can happen to anyone. The book about his journey can be found here http://amzn.to/2p1mm9t  He is also involved with an organization called Amare, NFP. The Facebook link to that organization can be found here http://bit.ly/2oEkwdt
  • The early birds included Bill, Allen, Pat and Mark 1. Among the last to arrive were Lindsey, Fred, Chris 1 and Cory.
  • 20 members were in the house to dine on chili mac/hamburger helper, roast beef, carrots, g-beans, salad and cake.
  • The Easter bunny delivered a stuffed egg to every member. Wendell loves him some bunny!
  • One wag reminded us that the IRS's motto is 'we're here to help'
  • Dick returned from his Florida hiatus this past Monday. He's now entertaining suggestions on where to move (anywhere but Illinois or Utah is his starting point).
  • It was nice to see Patty along with Wood River Rotarians Tommie and "Uncle" Leonard. Sally Speciale was on hand to deny any connection between her cast and Mark's head.
  • Anyone seen Dave?
  • Lori celebrated her birthday by paying Bill $10 for us to not sing. Done!. Matt shares Lori's April 17th day of birth. Happy, happy to him!
  • Sherry read a thank you not from Lisa,  a guest of Fred from a couple of weeks ago.
  • SAA Bill and Patty collected a few $$ from those that enjoyed the program and from those not in the house last week. It seems as though Bill was marginally repentant (it is lent after all) for skipping last week's meeting to attend a baseball game. Allen wasn't sure about Tiger Woods.
  • Don't forget to pick up your Baseball Mania tickets from Lori.
  • Opening duties were provided by Wendell, Chris 1 and Bill.
  • Chris 2 took two turns drawing cards for the $30 50-50 jackpot, no luck there. Wendell found no success with the scratch-off.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry Easter weekend.

Changing the world is possible, through Rotary

Bethany taking notes

By Bethany Lerch, former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, 2010-2011

I knew little about Rotary eight years ago when my former high school counselor encouraged me to apply for an Ambassadorial Scholarship. He was retired, but still active in Rotary, and knew a master’s was my next step. At the time, I had just graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and knew I needed to go to graduate school. But where and how?

Through a Google search, I learned Rotary was an international service organization. Intrigued, I applied for the scholarship and made it to the district interview, where I was asked what I wanted to do, really do. The question took me by surprise. Unsure how to answer, I stuttered that I hoped to change the world someday. I remember looking at the floor thinking, how far-fetched.

Less than a week later, I received the call that I had been selected. What if, I wondered, my acceptance had to do with wanting to “change the world” someday?  To continue reading, link here https://tinyurl.com/mlagob7

SMILE
I  called an old school friend and asked what was he doing.

He replied that he was working on "aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium, and steel under a constrained  environment."

I was  impressed.

On further inquiring, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water ... under his wife's  supervision.

BOTTOM LINE

There are currently about 530,000 computing jobs open in the U.S., but only 60,000 students graduated with bachelor's degrees in computer science in 2015. A government study predicted that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million computer science-related jobs available, but only 400,000 graduates with the skills to fill them.-Qz.com

Of the 270 occupations listed in the 1950 U.S. Census, only one has been completely eliminated by automation:elevator operator. Another 32 jobs were done in by loss of demand.-FoxNews.com
LAST WORD

"When old dreams die, new ones come to take their place. God pity the one-dream man."-Robert Goddard

"Don't trust a brilliant idea unless it survives the hangover."-Jimmy Breslin
