NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
EARLY BIRD CHILI CREW
  • The October 10th bulletin was opened by 53% of club members.
  • There was no meeting program on Thursday.
  • There was no late arriving crowd, there simply was no crowd. The 13 members in the house were led by Roger and Allen. Among the final arrivals were Fred, both Brad's and Rhonda.
  • Bill was amazed by the number of old folks who attended his 40th college reunion.
  • "The meal was the best one we've had in a while"- sez Mark 1. We noshed on lasagna, mostaccioli, corn, Caesar salad, bread sticks, cake, pie and mixed fruit, oh my!
  • Needless to say, talk about the early Redbirds demise was a common thread during table talk.
  • A photo album has been created for the photos that Lori and Rick took at the Chili Supper. You can find it by clicking the link on our home page. Double click on the image to enlarge.
  • So, Paul wants to know what place has hosted our club the longest. Was it The Lewis and Clark Motor Lodge restaurant (DiRomero's, among other names)? Was it Julia's?
  • "Cousin" Jeff was our lone visitor. If you are interested in spending several thousand $$ for a Cardinals fantasy camp next winter, talk to Jeff.
  • In week 2 the Turkey Fund has grown to $126. If you want to contribute by check, make it payable to Operation Blessing. The last collection will take place on November 19th.
  • Mark 1 was relieved to know that there will be no scaffolding involved with our Habitat project.
  • Allen, AKA 'quality control specialist', had one complaint about the chili dinner. The spoons weren't long enough to reach the bottom of the "tall boy" cups.
  • Roger read a note from Red that thanked us for staying in touch, even if it was just an invoice from Cory.
  • Roger was headed to the District Conference. He will find out if we can use the district's matching points program to name a Paul Harris Fellow next year.
  • According to Bill, Rhonda was quite the hot woman. Later he thought she was Lori. By the way, where was Lori? Not golfing!
  • Fred helped Bill shake the crowd down. Some of the correct answers included :postage stamps, cattle, marijuana, cowboys, I Love Lucy and Star Wars. Rick got to draw the lucky Rotary Powerball winners:Bill, Paul and Fred.
  • Paul is convinced that the black light bingo event needs some pot smoke drifting around the room to make it authentic. Does Yankee Candle make the scent? Would burning hemp work?
  • The meeting opened with Allen delivering the pledge, Rhonda the 4-Way and Bill offering grace by being thankful for "one hot woman in the room". The ensuing comments stayed just this side of tasteful.
  • Our SAA gave every table a few minutes to share thoughts about the first Cardinal game attended.
  • The $42 50-50 jackpot was won by Cory. Congrats! He promised to put the winnings in his children's 529 plan. Fred was taking his winning ($1) scratch off to the quick shop to convert into another winner.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.
HABITAT HOUSE

COMING ATTRACTIONS
This space will be used to provide current information about club/community events.
  • Roger reports that the Chili Supper event had about the same results as last year, not too great. (The lone Cardinal win during the same time frame didn't help attendance.) Please turn in your ticket money ASAP so Roger can provide a final accounting.
  • Our Cosmic (blacklight) Bingo event will happen on Saturday the 24th. Rhonda reports that she is trying to get a better handle on ticket sales. If you have unsold tickets please let her know right away. Reach her via email RPluester@4thebank.com or by calling 659.4181 . She needs this information in order to determine if there will be tickets to sell at the door. Also, if you would like to help during the event, let her know.  Getting folks into the hall will help us boost our bottom line. There are now  around 11 raffle baskets that have been put together. There will also be a raffle for a Michael Kors purse.
  • We will install insulation in the Habitat house on the 29th. Julia's will make  box lunches (turkey or ham) for us and we will meet at the building site in Roxana. The address is 132 E 3rd St (turn on 3rd toward the refinery at the police station. A photo of the house is below.) After a brief lunch/meeting time we will attack the project. Mark 3 thinks it will take about 2 hours to complete if we have dozen members assist. You can stay as long as your time permits. Wear work clothes. Tools to complete the project will be on site. Installing insulation requires no particular skill set.
  • The Christmas party will be held on December 3rd at High Flyers grill @ the airport. Rhonda and Patty are working on the details.
  • The basketball tournament will take place on January 30th. Joe, Chris and Fred are coordinating.
  • The Community Hope Center in Cottage Hills is looking for volunteers to deliver or serve Thanksgiving Day meals. Contact Barb @567.5976 or Diane @ 670.9580 to volunteer or for additional info.
  • The Bethalto rotary will be hosting the Halloween parade/party on the 28th.

  • We were meeting at Wood River Township Hospital. Rick was serving as club President. Current members serving on the board include:Dick, Paul and Mark 1.
  • The roadblock for Operation Blessing held the previous Saturday raised over $800. (Mike Peterson claimed he received a $5 "tip" because his legs looked so good in shorts.)
  • The Halloween Parade was scheduled for October 28th. We would be riding on a hay wagon instead of a trolley.
  • Mark 1 reported that a Roxana student was planning on applying for the long-term exchange program.

CALIFORNIA SUMMIT UNITES YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

By Katie Coard

This summer in Berkeley, California, I joined a group of Rotary young professionals and district leaders from the western United States and Canada at a summit to discuss the future of Rotary. Reflecting one of Rotary’s strengths, this event brought together many diverse perspectives to focus on what younger Rotarians are looking for in Rotary.I’ve been a part of the Rotary family since joining Rotaract in 2010, and it has changed my life in many ways. I am a founder and co-president of a provisional Rotary club in my hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Rotary taught me how to lead, engage, and manage groups of people, projects, and events. These are skills I use in my daily work. When I talk to people about why they need to be part of Rotary, I emphasize how all-encompassing it is. Where else can you make lifelong friendships, network with professionals, learn life skills, volunteer, and make a difference in communities all over the world?Every Rotary conference tries to think out of the box, but this was one of the best I’ve experienced. Organizers had designed a dynamic, interactive, and engaging program. Workshops led by the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley had us discussing, writing down, and illustrating our ideas and then presenting them to the larger group. Several themes emerged: Link here to read the rest of the story http://blog.rotary.org/2015/09/24/summit-in-california-unites-young-professionals/

THE BOTTOM LINE
  • North America has officially run out of IPv4 addresses, the most commonly used Internet Protocol numbers that identify every machine connected to the internet. Companies will have to speed up the migration to IPv6, which provides 340 undecillion addresses (undecillion=1 followed by 36 zeros).-Wired.com
  • Streaming music revenues have overtaken physical sales of CD's and records for the first time, totaling just over $1 billion for the first six months of 2015. Streaming is expected to surpass digital downloads in 2016.-Bloomberg.com
THE LAST WORD

  • "A two year old is kind of like having a blender, but you don't have a top for it."-Jerry Seinfeld
  • "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."-Socrates
