              "WHERE'S MY TICKET?"-PAUL
  • The regular program schedule will resume on October 21st. If you are unable to attend your scheduled presentation meeting let Prez Chris know so he can find a replacement presenter. Remember,  your speaker can attend via Zoom if that is their preference.
  • Prez Chris was under the weather (not Covid related) so Bill stepped up to gavel things to order.
  • ChrisH wants to know just how low mortgage rates can go?
  • It was nice to see Randy in person as he gets ready to celebrate the second week of his SECOND marriage.
  • Another merger meeting meeting will be taking place in the next few days. Lori and Rhonda are pretty comfortable that we will get there. How about the combined clubs being called Riverbend-East? How about a new name for our newsletter? Do you have any suggestions? Let Rick know.
  • Lunch featured chicken on rice, Rotary g-beans, cooked carrots, rolls, salad and cake.
  • The Turkey Fund is now @ $97. All $$ collected will be given to Operation Blessing to use for Thanksgiving food purchases. If you want to donate via check, make it payable to Operation Blessing. If you prefer to donate via PayPal of Venmo, Rick will accept payment and convert it to cash for the cause. Find him via phone 618.792.0256 or @john-hooks-7 on Venmo or @JrTheChief on PayPal. $45 was donated on Thursday.
  • Rhonda has been thinking about a possible winter virtual fundraiser. Do you have any suggestions? Let her know.
  • Pre-nooners included Allen, BradP, Lori and Randy. The very late arriving crowd of 12 included Bill, Cory and Rhonda.
  • Lori has lots and lots of Football Mania tickets , pick up a pack today! Winning opportunities begin on October 29th.
  • SAA Sherry was in Springfield so Sandy stepped up to fill the void. Randy served as the designated lugmeister. Trivia got kind of personal with questions about Paul's weight and Randy's marriages. Paul had an announcement about recent non-Rotary recognition for Ty and BradL. Randy announced his happy marriage.
  • Opening duties were handled smoothly by ChrisH, Randy and Bill, who was thankful for his first slice of cake.
  • The $31 jackpot was unclaimed by ticketless Paul and Sandy. Rick took a shot at the scratch-off.
  • Have a fine and dry weekend, stay safe. Ciao!

Which U.S. city was once called Pig's Eye?
Atlanta, Georgia
Saint Paul, Minnesota
Jackson, Mississippi
Memphis, Tennessee

The city of "Pig's Eye" is better known today as Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its former name came from its earliest settler, Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant, who made the area's first land claim in 1838, after which the settlement became known as Pig's Eye Landing. Fortunately for all, the name didn't stick. In 1841, a Roman Catholic missionary named Lucien Galtier moved to the region and established a chapel to the apostle Paul, which led to its current name, Saint Paul. The city became the capital of Minnesota eight years later, in 1849, and the state was granted admission to the Union less than a decade after that, in 1858. Parrant's nickname can still be found throughout the city, though: There's a Pig's Eye Regional Park and a Pigs Eye Lake, and for a time, there was even a Pig's Eye Brewing Company.

ROTARY SCHOLARS STAY CONNECTED THROUGH WATER DIPLOMACY
                                        Nataliya

Through The Rotary Foundation, we invest in emerging leaders who are using their skills to make the world a better place. We have the amazing opportunity in Rotary to participate in this work by offering scholarships that enable these young leaders to expand their skills and make connections with other professionals in their fields.
During Reconnect Week 5-11 October, we celebrate these alumni and hold activities designed to keep them connected. These alumni serve as ambassadors for Rotary, joining a growing network of peacebuilders and service-minded professionals who are partnering with us to do good in the world.
Rotary Scholar Bota Sharipova with her daughter

Bota Sharipova of Kazakhstan and Nataliya Chemayeva of Turkmenistan are both recipients of a global grant scholarship from District 5340 to study at the Joint University Water Cooperation and Diplomacy Program. Since graduating from the program, they are continuing to use what they learned and the connections they have made to promote peace through water cooperation, working together on several initiatives involving six countries that share the Aral Sea Basin centered in Central Asia.
The Water Cooperation and Diplomacy Program is a collaboration between the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in The Netherlands, the University for Peace in Costa Rica, and Oregon State University in Oregon, USA. It trains future water managers and other professionals how to address conflict over water by providing a comprehensive understanding of both water science and water diplomacy, including dispute mitigation, management, and resolution.
