NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT
  • This will be the last Banner until sometime in March. So, pay attention to your emails about the basketball tournament and disco bingo. And don't forget to eat your veggies.
  • The program was presented by A J French. She told us about the Gift of Voice program that she directs. The video has been posted. A J can be reached at aj.french@giftofvoice.com or 618.792.2049. Her organization has raised $6,000 toward a goal of $50,000. Donations can be made via the web site www.giftofvoice.com
  • 20 members were on hand to nosh on the spaghetti in meat sauce, g-beans, bread sticks, salad, coconut cream and pumpkin pies.
  • Fred will soon be heading to Houston to cover the Super Bowl as a media rep. That sounds like fun. It looks like Brady will be adding another ring to his collection.
  • Brad2, Allen, Bill and Pat were part of the early vanguard. Paul, Mark2, Erin and Rhonda represented the "laties".
  • Does everyone look better in low lighting?
  • Wendell was moving a wee bit gingerly after having lost his appendix this past Sunday. Views of his shaved spot could be had for $1. He also lost his deck tarp in the wind. If you see it blowing around Rosewood Heights, give him a holler.
  • Lori dared to be different...with her table selection.
  • Bill once again covered for Sherry. He promised she would return from her Florida vacay by next Thursday.
  • Mark2 presented a make-up from the Alton-Godfrey club. He reported, with some degree of glee, that the SAA did not fine anyone.  Is it some sort of ceremonial title?
  • Sandy suggested that Sherry lacks respect for her elders, especially her aunt!!
  • This past Wednesday you received an e-mail about the disco/blacklight bingo event on March 11th. Please reference that e-mail for the current details. Rhonda hopes that tickets can be distributed at our meeting on the 19th. Donations for baskets are needed. Event day volunteers can sign up by contacting  Wood River Rotarian Donna Karpan at DKarpan@firesafetyinc.com
  • Joe sez he has never seen a Star Wars movie. Can anyone else make that claim?
  • Mark2 shared an e-mail form the Salvation Army about their upcoming appreciation lunch for volunteers. $97,000 was raised during the campaign. Bill plans to attend.. Anyone else?
  • Chris1 began circulating a list of concession items that he would like to have donated for the basketball tournament concession stand.
  • SAA sub Rick recruited Fred as the lugmeister. Right or wrong questions were asked about the inauguration, iPhone and reality. Did you know that you can legally fish for Illinois catfish with a pitchfork?
  • Opening duties were provided by Rhonda and Dave.
  • 50-50 opportunities were rejected by Chris1 and (here we go again) Lori. Rick got the scratch-off but sold it to Wendell (at face value) who promptly gifted it to Sandy. The $48 jackpot awaits its next challenge.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Corporate membership: What has worked for us and what hasn’t

By Robert Fisher, Rotary Club of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

As the first club chartered in Australia, we have a membership of around 250 people. We had two ‘champions’ who were keen to introduce corporate membership. Over several years, they sought acceptance of this category in the upper layers of Rotary, and eventually were given the go-ahead to try it as part of a pilot project in 2011.

Motivators

We saw corporate membership as a way to uphold our club’s long tradition of attracting the most senior members of Melbourne’s business community, and tap into corporate networks to use their expertise to enhance our social programs. It was our belief that we could achieve significantly greater impact by getting entire corporations involved. We are able to offer them access to a highly respected service organization, and opportunities for their staff to put in volunteer hours and engage in projects.  To continue reading link here http://bit.ly/2gXrjZ1
