About Our Club
HISTORY
Alejandro Copete, Miguel Quimbayo, Augusto Rojas and Ingo Werk met at the Quimbayo residence in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, in December 2006. They discussed US-Colombian issues and Los Angeles Rotary projects in Colombia. Past District Governor Ingo Werk shared his experience of implementing humanitarian projects in Colombia and Rotary’s ideals and objectives with them. While discussing the importance of support for these projects by the Colombian community living in the greater Los Angeles area, the discussion focused on joining or starting a Rotary Club. Alejandro, Augusto and Miguel agreed to meet with Ingo to explore the formation of a predominantly Colombian Rotary Club in District 5280.
Beginning in January 2007, the four met weekly on Tuesdays at noon for lunch at Cozymel's Mexican Grill at 2171 Rosecrans Avenue in El Segundo. Once they agreed in February to start a Colombian Rotary Club, they moved their weekly meetings to the Los Angeles Airport Hilton at 5711 West Century Blvd in Los Angeles. They experimented with lunch, evening and off-site meetings, until they settled on Tuesdays for lunch at the LAX Hilton. The membership grew to 20 and the Rotary Club of Los Angeles Colombo Americano, California, USA, was chartered on August 27, 2007. Club number: 77105 of Rotary International and the 49th Club in Rotary District 5280. Sponsoring Club: the Rotary Club of Wilmington. For the first year PDG Ingo Werk served to the Club as Special Representative of Rotary International.
During the 2008-2009 Rotary year, the Club’s meeting location moved from the LAX Hilton to Cucina Calabrese at 2302 Artesia Blvd in Redondo Beach, from there to Caffe Roberto at 11800 West Jefferson Blvd in Culver City, from there to the Spitfire Grill, 3300 Airport Avenue in Santa Monica, and now meets on Thursday evenings at the Medical Plaza, 13624 Hawthorne Blvd in Hawthorne.
Currently we meet at the Sizzler Restaurant in Torrance every 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 6:30-8:30.
