Why Am I Doing Something So Crazy?
I am raising funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) in honor of my father, Bill Powers, who was diagnosed with this rare blood cancer last spring. This past August he underwent an extreme treatment process in which he had to spend 28 days in isolation followed by months of at home treatment to avoid becoming sick with a weakened immune system. All along the way he main concern was for his wife (my mom) and our family. The entire treatment process he always had a smile on his face and the attitude that he “would be just fine.” I am certain that it is his positive attitude that has kept him moving.
About “Uncle Bill”
As a man who spent 40 years in the insurance business and 20 + years as a Rotarian in Buffalo, NY you can only image he’s one tough individual. He’s also the unofficial mayor that everyone calls “Uncle Bill”. He truly reflect the Rotarian spirit by always giving more of himself and dedicating his life to others. As he was given the opportunity to leave isolation during recovery his first trip was to a church in our hometown to load boxes (a Thursday ritual pre-diagnosis) that were being shipped down to a mission in Nicaragua.
As I said most call him “Uncle Bill”, but I get the honor of simply calling him dad. I figure if he can fight his way through a disease with no known cure, I can complete the Ironman triathlon and raise funds and awareness for this research foundation.
I appreciate any and all support to help the MMRF in their journey to find a cure. I’m proud to say that over 90% of the funds raised go directly to research and programming for patient support, making it one of the top 1% of charities in appropriate spending in the country.

Regardless of your religion thoughts and prayers do count as support! On Saturday November 2nd I will be embracing on a 15+ hour adventure that will put my body to extreme physical limits. I can use all the prayers I can get! Honestly I’d prefer you keep the patients and families of those affected by cancer, specifically Multiple Myeloma, in your minds the weekend of November 2nd. The Ironman is nothing compared to the journey that a patient and their family must take in order to fight the disease.
