St. Joseph's Community Heath Needs
Cloris Bustamante and her staff Lisa (Clinical Director, Urban and Community Health)
She says St. Joseph's is one of the most visited emergency rooms i the US. They also have the most visitors who are not insured. All the donations go to support this. They are more than Southern Passaic County - they have spread out into Bergen and Morris. They are opening an office in Ringwood.
Cloris tells the club about prescriptions that may not be covered. She explains about diabetes diagnosis and that people need to change their lifestyle choices or there are consequences. Children are even developing this. Cloris does research and shares within the community why they need to get healthy.
Every year she has to do a community health needs assessment. This tells her what are the common illnesses that effect the community and how they can help the community heal. It is all encompassing - Mental, Cancer, Nutrition and Respiratory etc. They want to reach entire families from teaching the kids in school to the parents that cook. Cloris educates the primary care providers as well.
She explains we need more research on Mental Health so that there is a screening to determine what chemicals are not balanced in the brain. High Blood pressure is also a problem when you can have a tiny heart pump and people need more exercise to make sure blood is pumping.
Cloris recommends that you watch additional sugars and drink a lot of water.
St. Joseph's offers free preventative medicine for people who are under insured and not insured. They still have people coming into the emergency room with Stage 4 cancer because they are not going in for their screening.
St. Joe’s have seven affinity groups that they promote for different religions and disabilities. She stresses that you go to one of the outpatient pharmacies to make sure you are healthy.
Total people in attendance - 16 Rotarians and three guests as reported

50/50 with the Cards - Colleen wins! - She picked between $15 or a shot at the card - she decided to try for the Ace of Spades and lost. The ticket chance goes to Gloria to pick a card. She losses as well.
The Great Falls Pantry - requesting donations of Non-Perishable foods.
With almost 27,000 military veterans living in Paterson alone, many of them living under tight financial constraints, this pantry was just what they needed.
Located at 160 Ward Street in Paterson, NJ, the pantry will be open the 3rd Saturday of every month from 9-11 am. Veterans will need to bring proof of service and a tax return in order to shop. Currently, the pantry holds a variety of dry goods and the organizers plan to hold fundraisers in the future to continue to keep the pantry stocked for our vets!
