TODAY'S SPEAKER
This Meeting's Speaker: Brian Fischer
Our guest speaker today is Paterson Rotary past president Brian Fischer, President of Morningside Greenhouse in Haledon, N.J.
Brian began his talk today with a cautionary suggestion… “Don’t follow the directions”. That is especially true for raising orchids. Directions on orchid plants sold in stores tell the consumer to place several ice cubes in the soil rather than water once a week.. Brian tells us to use warm water and fertilize the soil for best results.
Lady Slipper orchids grow in New Jersey and are on the endangered species list. They need a fungus to grow.
The Vanda orchid and the white Cattelya orchid are named for Brian.. The Phalaenopsis is the easiest to grow and the easiest to kill he tells us. They can grow indoors or outdoors. Again, do not add ice.
Next he spoke of the Pointsietta plant. The Pointsietta plant is really a tropical tree. Contrary to what many believe, they are not poisonous. They need full sunlight, warmth, and kept evenly moist. Next up is the Amaryllis plant. The Amaryllis is a tropical plant generally sold around Christmas time. The bulb sticks out of the pot. It takes six weeks to grow from bulb to flower. It needs light for six weeks, food for six weeks and put in a dark closet for six weeks. Fertilize with 15-30-15 fertilizer. They are prized for their exotic trumpet shaped flowers born on 1 to 2 foot stalks or scapes.
Thank you Brian for a very interesting and informative presentation. I think we all learned a lot about the plants we love and how to care for them!
On April 1, 2023 we will have our annual bus trip to the Windcreek Casino in Bethlehem, PA. See Dan or Erika to make your reservation. This trip is usually sold out. Cost is $40.00 per person which includes $25.00 back in free play.. The next one will be in November.
