TODAY'S SPEAKER

This Meeting's Speaker:

Our speaker today is Eileen Shafter - Paterson Superintendent of Schools

Our speaker today is Mrs. Eileen Shafer, Paterson Superintendent of Schools.

Mrs. Shafer is accompanied by her executive assistant Ms. Rodriguez.

Mrs. Shafer distributed booklets for attendees who were able to follow along with her presentation. The booklets outlined Academic Updates and eight programs implemented in the Paterson School District.
The Newcomers program for High School grade 9 which is developed to meet newcomers’ needs before they enter general education classrooms. The goal is to help students adapt to a new culture and acquiring. English.

The Paterson P-TECH program enables students to earn both their high school diploma and a two year associate degree.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at International High School has received the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Female Diversity Award five years in a row.
Mrs. Shafer tells us that students in Kindergarten through third grade are assessed on their reading proficiency on an ongoing basis. Students are currently not reading up to grade level.

When asked about the Rotary Dictionary project that provides dictionaries to third grade students, Mrs. Shafer said that the dictionaries along with the text books are a valuable tool in teaching the children to read.

There is a shortage of teachers due to resignations and retirements.

A $7,500.00 Recruitment/Retention Bonus is being offered to fill the gap.
Paterson Public Schools’ high school graduation rate is on a three year upward trend and is on track to reaching pre-pandemic levels.

This program was an eye-opener in as much as many, myself included, were unaware of the many valuable programs available to all students in the school system.
This was a very brief synopsis of this informational and in depth presentation.

Many thanks to our program chairman Vincent Iannaccone for arranging another great program.
