On Friday, February 17, 2012, the Northern Valley Rotary Club celebrated the charter of a groundbreaking Interact Club. The Bergen Center for Child Development (BCCD), a private non-profit school for children with special needs from Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties, became the first such high school in the country — and maybe the world — to form an Interact club. District Governor Emil Geering presented BCCD Director Liz Yeager with the historic charter and District Governor Elect Bonnie Sirower installed the officers. Each child in the school received a certificate of membership and a Certificate from Congressman Scott Garrett's Representative, Dan Pfeiffer. Congressman Steve Rothman also sent a Certificate to the school to commemorate this historic event.

The event started out with Northern Valley Rotary Treasurer Stan Levenshus presenting the BCCD with an American flag, which was donated by his son Jay, that flew over the Capitol building in honor of Jay's attaining Eagle Scout. Interact Treasurer Nicholas R. guided everyone in the pledge of allegiance. Our own Rev. Bill Doster presented the invocation! Rotary Advisor Jim Boyer closed out the event by leading everyone in the Four Way Test.

Special thanks to the Hoboken Rotary Club for donating a Four Way Test banner!

The event was a huge success because of the support of the staff, kids and Directors of the BCCD, the Northern Valley Rotary Club and all Rotarians in District 7490, DG Emil Geering, DGE Bonnie Sirower, District Interact Chair Bob Traitz, Jeanne Martin - Director of Pascack Valley Meals on Wheels, and the food which was graciously donated by CareOne.

The idea for the Interact Club came from Bonnie Sirower. Bonnie asked Liz if she would agree to host the Interact Club and when Liz agreed, Bonnie called Northern Valley Rotarian Jim Boyer to "run with the ball". With the blessings of Club President Don Humphreys, Jim has worked with Liz Yeager and BCCD Interact Advisors, Laura Joles and Janet Burns to set up a program that will not only help the kids at BCCD attain their greatest potential, but will be used to help establish similar clubs around the world.
