4th Graders throughout Fair Lawn Elementary Schools recently participated in a series of spelling bees in their schools in order to compete in the inaugural The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn’s 4th Grade Spelling Bee Championship.  The program was held on April 18th at the Fair Lawn Community Center.  Each fourth grade class sent two representatives to participate in this first ever event; 34 children were vying for the title of Fair Lawn Rotary 4th Grade Spelling Champion.

Each of the 34 students worked hard to get to this event and they worked even harder at the Championship round as they competed for a chance to be named The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn’s 4th Grade Spelling Bee Champion and take home a color Nook e-reader donated by Columbia Bank.  The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn created this event as a natural offshoot of its 3rd Grade Dictionary Distribution program.

The word list utilized for this event was compiled by Mary Ann Pasuit, Language Arts Supervisor with assistance from Cathy Schofield of the Fair Lawn School District.  Each 4th grade teacher and the elementary school principals were fundamental in working with their students through each of the qualifying rounds held at their respective schools and preparing them for the Fair Lawn Rotary Championship Round.  All of the students participating in the championship round showed amazing skill and composure as they worked their way through the list during the course of the evening.

Veronica Gomez was named The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn’s 4th Grade Spelling Bee Champion; Veronica hails from the Radburn Elementary School.  The second place winner was Aashansa Patel of the Warren Point Elementary School.
