Mental Health Week BBQ

On Friday 15th October Rotarians cooked a sausage sizzle at "The Centre" in

Liverpool Street as part of a publicity and meet the public for mental health

workers associated with Country and Outback Health and Headspace.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

Ellisa Bayly a locally based specialist prostate Cancer nurse gave an informative and

well received presentation on the prostate gland and the statistics related to cancer.

To hear from a few of the Rotarians present who are survivors of

Prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment was particularly poignant

and we thank them for their contribution.

The take home message was to talk openly about any issues

with your partner and especially your general medical practitioner.

Record of our first meeting for 2021

One of the best evenings we have ever had at Puckridge Park for quite a long time!

Perfect weather and a good attendance of about 22 or so members and partners.

We enjoyed a great BBQ on our new Trailer thanks to Bob Sorenson,

Pat Callaghan and Tony Freeth the master chefs and supervisors!

Thanks to everyone who complied with our Covid Plan.

Also for bringing your own tables and chairs, eating paraphernalia,

plus drinks, salads and sweets.

It was a really great night of fellowship.

RIDE FOR SICK KIDS.

It is for a second year of raising funds for sick kids at Ronald Mc Donald House.Last year these 2 boys raised over $90,000 for the house, but they don’t expect anything like it this year. We have a team going to this fundraising function and there may be some other Rotarians interested.

CAMERA CLUB BBQ

Hi Rotarians,

As I will be away for the next meeting would you mind passing on a very heartfelt thank you to Rotary from the Camera club.

A special thanks to Brett Klau, Brian and Deidre Turvey, Mark Comas and Marie Callaghan for their help in cooking on the day.

It was a great social event and many hands made light work. The goodwill engendered for Rotary was palpable.

The trailer is back in the shed after a decent wash to get the dust off.

A pity to see Mikkira so brown, dry and dusty.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS FOR RIDING FOR DISABLED.

RDA are seeking help to move kids around.

Hi Colin

Here is some information about the "bus driver/s" that RDA are looking for to help out with the picking up & dropping off of students for the lessons. It would work well on a roster basis..maybe some of the wives may be interested in joining their partner as the person supervising the children..just a thought.

Bus Driver Info for Riding -

We need a team of volunteers in rotation to join us to cover others being away or not well.

Riding picks up and delivers clients from schools across Port Lincoln during school terms on a Tuesday from 9.15 to 1.45.

The bus we hire is a manual, but you only need a car licence to drive.

With you is another volunteer whose role is to collect and look after the clients.

Training is provided for role and routes which are bi weekly

Clearance checks to volunteer with Riding,

We require a DCSI Screening Check for Child. Vulnerable and Disability if you wish to Volunteer on a Tuesday which is a Client Day.

Riding can instigate a check, but it costs nearly $60.00 as a volunteer, and if you already have a DCSI Screening Child Clearance I need to sight the original.

Term 3 commences on the 31st July.

Armistice Community Group

The District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula voted to allow the construction of the proposed revised Memorial to be built at the beginning of Gallipoli Beach Road on land administered by Council.

Whilst there is a site change from the northern end to the southern end of Gallipoli Beach, from Lot 53 (Crown Land) to the adjacent Lot 6 (Council administration) the move will avoid any land ownership issues with Crown Lands and financial issues that go with it.

I advise that we have included the Bendigo Bank and PL Rotary Club in the design of one of the permanent Bronze Plaques.

Hi Colin we have been waiting for about 6 weeks on the memorial wall engineering. Stassi engineering whyalla.

The wall is about 1100 high so law requires engineering.

I spoke to lowe redding as recently as friday and they again phoned Stassi and were told Monday.

Nothing.

We have the bronze plaques about to be sent from melbourne ....tomorrow or friday hopefully on display at the hall wednesday.

Yesterday we secured the Nauo people representation at Gallipoli and the Hall.

The unveiling of the wall will probably now be Remembrance day Sunday November 11th ...Sadly.

Rotary President Elect training.

I attended the combined District (9500 and 9520) President Elect training in Adelaide last weekend representing Port Lincoln (7 and 8 of April). While a lot stays the same there is also a lot change at the RI level. Some of the most important changes to Rotary rules are the club can now choose to meet fortnightly if they wish. Also Rotarians are not required to attend any meeting provided they do community service in lieu. Rotarian are only required to attend 50% of meetings or 12 hours of community service over a 6 month period or a combination of the two. This opens up opportunities to recruit new members, who in the past have not been able to attend meetings. Also it is important to remember that community service can include admin work on programs like youth exchange, RYLA, NYSF etc.

Each Club should nominate one of their attendees to vote on their behalf and that person should advise of their appointment to incoming Secretary Jacqui Atyeo upon arrival.
This budget reflects the impact of our District’s falling membership numbers whilst insurance, national training and district administration costs remain the same or rise; it emphasises the need to regain economies of scale, which of course will occur as we move towards the new District (9510).
The Budget attachment also shows the proposed and historical summary of District Dues.
Both the budget and proposed dues have been formulated after considerable discussion and evaluation by members of the District Management & Finance Committee; in this regard if you have any enquiries on either the budget or dues please don’t hesitate to email District Treasurer Stephen Noble on treasurer@rotary9500.org prior to the Adelaide LRN (28^th April).

As previously advised Rotary and our District in particular, is at a crossroad and your attendance at this LRN will ensure you are well placed and better equipped to be part of the journey to ensure our great organisation adapts and flourishes for another 100 years.

Port Lincoln’s Jade Calverley wins gold and silver in World Dwarf Games.

There’s a new super-fish in the pool after local teenager Jade Calverley conquered the world with six gold medals and one silver in Canada at the 7th World Dwarf Games August 2017.

Jade’s extraordinary haul included four individual and two team golds in swimming, and an unexpected bonus silver medal in soccer in the team that was runner-up to England 1-0.

“It was an awesome experience — I am still running on adrenaline and getting hugs and congratulations from people,” she said.

Jade, 18, started swimming at age four for therapeutic reasons. She later joined the West Coast Swimming Club for socialisation as much as training, but soon liked the thrill of competition.

The 123cm student and childcare worker was the only South Australian in the Australian team for the games in Guelph, Ontario Canada. At a February training camp on the Gold Coast she knew just three other athletes, but quickly bonded with the team of 29.

Jade went on to win the 50m and 100m breaststroke, and 200m medley, and was in the relay teams that won the 4x25m and 4x50m freestyle. She was asked to join the women’s soccer team in the training camp and quickly agreed when she discovered they needed an extra player to compete.

Jade is studying for a Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education with an aim of helping children with disabilities into sport. She is planning to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and the 2021 World Dwarf Games – and will be cheering on fellow Port Lincoln champ Kyle Chalmers in his bid to repeat his Rio Olympics 100m freestyle gold in the Tokyo Olympics.

The Port Lincoln Rotary Club, Pride of Workmanship Awards we held on Tuesday the 23rd May. This year we included sporting clubs who wish to recognise the effort of their volunteers as well as business .

The Pride of Workmanship awards were instigated in 1975 by the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills in Australia, and spread through the Rotary Clubs throughout the world with the Port Lincoln Rotary Club joining in the late 1980s. The Pride of Workmanship Program enables managers in our society to help employees achieve the goal of job satisfaction, and publicly recognize them for their efforts. The objective of the program is to provide employers with an opportunity to recognize employees who display the qualities worthy of an Award, and epitomise the Pride of Workmanship theme which is "Do it once- do it well".

Guest speaker for the night Brett Maher, spoke about his basketball career both with the Adelaide 36ers and with the Australian Olympic team and the effort and dedication required to compete at the elite level.

The night recognised 11 awardees with President Mike Munro and Brett presenting them with their awards.

ST JOSEPH'S SCHOOL BUSINESS WEEK SIMULATED EXERCISE 3-7 JULY.

Some of you will remember this exercise last year. It involves mentoring a small group of students competing with their peers in a one week simulated business plan exercise. Last year some of us 'went in at the deep end'. They have promised us some tutorial time beforehand so that we know where we are going. A message from the school - Kate Benjamin and Reece Francis are organizing ABW this year. The feedback from the school last year was that the members of Rotary were terrific and that it would be fantastic to get them back again to help out.

Time involved is flexible; can be as little as an hour a day or whatever you want to put in.

ASSIST WITH HEALTH SURVEY.

To whom it may concern For people living in country SA, timely access to the health services that they need or desire may not always be possible because of distance, transportation issues, and service availability. This suggests that people living in country SA may have unmet health care needs. To address this issue, the University of South Australia Department of Rural Health are conducting a ground breaking study that is examining the health care expectations and experiences of country South Australians in order to better understand the health needs of people living in country SA, and to identify areas where the health system / local region could assist to better serve these needs. The state-wide survey is open to persons over the age of 18 years, who have used a health care service or received any health intervention / therapy within the last 12 months, and live in country SA. The reason for this email is that we are looking for ways to increase local awareness of this important project. We therefore ask if you would be keen to promote this survey to your Rotary Club membership / local contacts. Should you be interested, we would be happy to send you some examples of materials that you could use to inform your network of the study (e.g. email, flyer, newsletter article). As a measure of our gratitude for your support, your organisation will be clearly acknowledged in all future publications and presentations arising from the project. SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR 2017-18 INBOUND ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT

Dear Rotarians and friends.

I am contacting you all in a serious attempt to source the 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^thhost families for Ask Hestbæk our inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student 2017-18 from Denmark, who arrives in late July.

He will be hosted initially by Brian and Deidre Turvey. Thank you both so much.

Ask Hestbæk is probably our youngest (he will turn 16 in November) exchange student we have hosted in our club for some time, and this will bring a fresh and new experience for us all to appreciate.

Sourcing host families is never an easy task for those who manage the RYE Program in your Club.

We have spoken with both St Joseph’s School and Navigator College, the former with whom we have a great and continuing relationship, and the latter is now showing a real positive interest now that the management at the school has changed.

They have been supportive enough to spread the word for us in their newsletters of the past week

However, at this early stage we have no feedback.

So, I am imploring you all to make consideration of our needs and make sure you put a little time aside to ask your extended families and friends, work colleagues, business or sporting club associates, your grandchildren’s friends or school buddies and their families, if they would like to be host families for our student for 3 months or so during the 12 months Ask is in Port Lincoln.

Please help us put the word out in the community.

The student usually has 4 host families. The approximate hosting periods would be as follows;

These can be flexible and are generally negotiated between the current and following host families in concert with the Inbound Student Counsellor; Greg Jones in this case.

1^st - August thru October 2^nd- November thru January 3^rd- February thru April

4^th- May thru July (During which time the student is away for about 3 weeks on a tour in May)

I have attached an abbreviated version of Ask's Application Form for RYE, a D9500 “Host Family Guide” as well as a brochure, entitled “An invitation to become a host family” and an extract from the Rotary Youth Exchange Australia (RYEA)website “ryea.org.au”

All of which you can print off or save and forward to those you think may be accommodating!

The RYEA website gives any amount of information regarding the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and host families.

The host family, including all persons >18yo living at home, will be interviewed by Rotary representatives and will also require a ‘Child Related Employment Screening’ assessment done by Dept. of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI). The Club instigates the application, then the applicant completes it on-line.

However, the Rotary Club will pay the individual application fees.

Please support your club’s 51 years of continuous participation in this incredibly valuable Rotary Program by making a big effort to get the word around your own extended family, friends and associates and let them know just how remarkable the program is and encourage them to participate as a host family.

This new type feeder meets all the legal requirements for their premises. If you know anybody who may be interested in volunteering with RDA I'm sure John can put them in touch.

I just wanted write a small note of thanks to you all for allowing Ben (David and Jackie Johnston's Grandson) to be a part of the Rotary team serving at the tent. I am so grateful to you all for showing him the meaning of "Community" and working together selflessly; It is a true gift that you have given. As a Mother of a son who could easily be bombarded by the negative influences of the world today, I am so grateful to you all for showing him and allowing him to be a part of such a lovely group of people working so hard and selflessly for their community. It is something that you should all be very proud of; making such a positive difference, not just in the local community but if I may be as bold to say; the world.....Thank you again!!

Dear Avriel and Glen,

Thank you for your generous donation of $1000 to our Rotary Club.

I know it has been Glens practice for some time to give a donation and it is very much appreciated by our club and it is put to good use in our community.

I have given thought where to place these funds and at the moment there are two projects that are certainly worth supporting and I have indicated to my board that is where I wish the funds will go.

Project 1 We are in negotiations at the moment with the Nautilus Arts Centre – City of Port Lincoln in forming an annual art award known as “Rotary Youth Art Award” to which we will contribute $500.

Project 2 We are sponsoring a year 11 Port Lincoln student who has been selected to be a Youth Parliamentarian at the Youth Parliament in July 2017.

It is an apolitical program that empowers young people to be advocates for their community.

It aims to connect politicians and decision makers with youth voices and opinions while providing young people in South Australia with youth leadership training and opportunities for personal development.

We will contribute $500 to assist with costs.

I am pleased to hear Glen is improving and we send you both our best wishes.

The Port Lincoln Rotary Club, Pride of Workmanship Awards will be held again on Tuesday the 23rd May. This year we are encouraging sporting clubs who wish to recognise the effort of their volunteers as well as business to be involved. For more information contact Craig Faulkhead 0417848618.

Last year, the guest speaker John Lynch CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service central division likened the awardees dedication to their respective jobs to the dedication that all of the people who make up the RFDS have to that organisation.

The RFDS make an average of 11 flights per day just to the Eyre Peninsula, the organisation has some 64 aircraft Australia wide.

Harvest at Boston Bay Wines

Harvest in the Boston Bay vineyard is achieved in the old traditional. Grapes are picked by hand when the grapes are just right for harvest.

Rotary along with other local clubs are invited to participate by providing a team of enthusiastic pickers. Returns to the clubs are generous, being a reward for the amount of effort that clubs provide.

The Rotary Club of Port Lincoln generally has about twenty or so members participate in the harvest each year. We have been a part of the Ford family vineyard harvests since its inception over 30 years ago.

Harvest has been on Sundays and has been taking around 3 to 4 hours and is then followed by a light lunch and refreshments kindly organised by the Ford family.

TEAKLE AUTO SPRINTS.

I urgently need to receive your commitment to assisting at the EASTER Teakle Auto Sprint barbecue please. It's on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April and I need to know numbers.

We will be located opposite the Yacht Club at the entrance to the Pits. All cars will have to pass the tent so if you want to be able to see, this is the place. The event is expected to raise about half as much as our Tunarama stall and may be our second largest fund raiser for the year. We will be preparing bacon and egg breakfasts for contestants from 7.45AM to about 11AM, then one minute steaks, sausages and onions and drinks to race goers in two shifts, 11AM until 2PM and 2PM until 5PM. That means we will need three shifts of six people on both Saturday and Sunday. We need all members to participate please.

THAT'S WHAT I THINK.

After reading about Dick Smith's Million $ donation to Rotary Aust and reading all the details that I have put in another item in the ebulletin I got to thinking about it.

I wonder how long it would take us to find an individual/individuals or organisation whose life and circumstances we could truly enhance ?

I know many are assisted by organisations or govt. departments but there may well be a worthy project out there that has 'fallen through the gap'. Maybe we're smart enough to find them.

Well......that's what I think !

Dick Smith Matched Funding Grant.

DICK SMITH AND ROTARY.

Dick has previously given a significant amount through Rotary towards the eradication of the once widespread disease polio. This project has run for thirty years and is nearing completion, polio is now isolated to a few small enclaves in remote regions. Dick joins the likes of world-renowned philanthropist Bill Gates as a major supporter of Rotary and its various programs worldwide. On this occasion, the donation by Dick and Pip will be administered by the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society, for the benefit of local individuals and communities. Dick highlighted the fact many Australians suffer personal hardship, whether through accident, illness or misadventure. He considers Rotary one of the most trusted and respected charities in the world.

Dick Smith has put $1 million out there for Rotary Clubs to access for a project on a $1 for $1 basis. More information is available in 'read more'.

MESSAGE FROM MADDIE.

Hey Adrian,

Sorry I haven't sent you an email yet, I've just been so busy and having so much fun. I thought I would send you this email as a bit of an update on what I've been doing. I arrived on the fifteenth in Helsinki, then spent two hours driving to Karkku. When we arrived we all had dinner and fell asleep because practically none of us had any sleep on the plane over here.

Over the course of the week we did lots of stuff. We were busy from seven thirty in the morning, until ten o'clock at night. We would have Finnish lessons for around five hours each day, with a lunch break in between, then activities afterwards. The activities were obviously the best part. We went to the sauna and then swimming( for ten seconds) in the icy lake, ice fishing, eating smoked trout on an open fire, drinking traditional Finnish coffee in a teepee, exploring Tampere (Finland's second largest city), night walks to an old church, tobogganing, massive snow fights and lots of eating. By the end of the Karkku camp I had made a bunch of amazing friends and memories.

On Sunday my host family came and picked me up from Karkku, and we had a three hour long journey back to Kouvola. When we finally arrived in Kouvola it was dark, so we went straight home. The home is very small for seven people but we all fit well. My host family is great and have made me feel very comfortable.

I started school yesterday and realised that some of these Finnish school 'facts' are actually a lie. For example, I have heard that Finnish schools last only four to five hours. This is false. I leave the house at seven forty am, and school finishes at four o'clock pm. Apart from the long days and not understanding what anyone says, school has been quite tolerable.

I start Finnish lessons tonight and look forward to understanding what is going on around me.

Again I would like to thank you and the Rotary club for giving me this opportunity. I am having the best time over here and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Port Lincoln Rotary partnered with local radio station 5CC, Magic 89.9 and with Port Lincoln City Council to recognise sporting achievement in the Lower Eyre Peninsula region. The Junior and Senior Sports Person of the Year awards for 2016 , were presented by Olympic gold medalist Kyle Chalmers at a dinner at Ravendale Sports Centre on Saturday night the 14th of January.

Port Lincoln Rotary has presented a Sports Person of the Year for many decades now but this new award pulls together Rotary's and other similar awards, to make the one premier award.

Cricketer Ben Smith (Senior Sports Person) and young tennis star Charlotte Nicholls (Junior Sports Person) were recognised as the inaugural winners of this new award.

As you may be aware I have volunteered and have been confirmed as President of Port Lincoln Rotary for the 2017/18. The first thing that needs to happen now, is to assemble a board of Directors for 2017/18 Rotary year. Some members have already indicated their willingness to be on the board but we need more. In the past the president elect has nominated the board but it is my wish that the club choose their board members from those willing to stand. I ask members to consider being on the board and if for some reason, you are not available for the full year job sharing may be possible (eg 6 month each), please talk to me if you have any ideas.

Lets continue the great work in the community of Port Lincoln Rotary.

The group has agreed to pay for their own meals and I will book them in on the internet when I have confirmation of the attendance of Ross and Brian.

Should be a very interesting presentation and the group has enough expertise to correctly answer any of the many anticipated questions.

A very topical and important matter for us all to get our heads around.

Looking forward to hearing some facts and figures from people who know their subject. Rather than the misinformed opinion, political opportunism and media hysterics that we have had to contend with recently.

Rotary supports Youthoria Theatre.

The Port Lincoln Rotary club has continued it's support for the Youthoria Theatre by donating a snack and drink vending machine. The vending machine will sell snacks and drinks in the foyer of the theatre and will leave the staff free to attend to ticketing.

Helping install the vending machine are Port Lincoln Rotary president, Mike Munro along with John Myers, Juri Berzins and Dave Gillies from Rotary with Christy from Youthoria in the centre of the photo.

For those who haven't sampled the local barra I've got to say that you're really missing a treat. We recently enjoyed crispy skin barra cooked on the bbq under a gum tree in the Southern Flinders while waiting for emailed articles for the bulletin. CLAIRE WEBBER'S TRIP TO USA AND CANADA.

Claire spoke to us recently regarding her Rotary vocational Training Trip to USA and Canada. Those members away missed one of the most animated speakers we have experienced for some time; a dynamic talk complete with live sound effects and visuals to support her presentation.

It was difficult for me to both enjoy the moment, and to make some notes to pass on to you.

Some of the highlights were;

Yahoo's data farm - 6 times the size of Ravendale oval, where among other things your emails are stored multiple times to safeguard against accidental loss.

Marijuana Farms - Max. of 1 hectare each with high fences.

Pine Forests - where the pine beetle is destroying whole forests.

Winery Visits - winery visits, winery visits!

Canada's Largest Cattle Ranch - 1 million acres, 8% irrigated. 20,000 cattle, and cowboys!

Vending Machine Bunnings

At short notice, Bunnings advised they are changing their store to include a cafe and asked us to move out the vending machines. We removed the stock Friday, thanks to Colin West, Mike Munro, John Myers for their help. Saturday morning at 6.30am the machines were moved out of Bunnings store with their help using their pallet jack and fork lift.

Thanks to David Johnston, Peter Smart, Mark Comas, Geoff Rayson and John Myers. The big Ap6500 machine is still on David Johnston's trailer and it is stored in the Youth Hub building behind the theatre.

The small snack machine and coffee machine are stored in the Rotary shed, the vending machine committee are to consider what we do with the machines.

DECISION TIME IS HERE.

President John announced at the last meeting that we still lack a President for 2016/7 year. Should there not be a nomination he is prepared (as a last resort) to fill the position for next year but ONLY if we have a President elect for 2017/8 and a President nominee for 2018/9 in place before 30/6/16.

PORT LINCOLN RADIO CONTROLLED SPORTING CAR CLUB..DAVID JOHNSTON.

Dear Rotarians,

At very short notice, the Port Lincoln Radio Controlled Sporting Car Club (PLRCSCC) has undertaken to organise the first Round of the state championships Neo+ Challenge on the weekend of 27 and 28 February 2016.

Their current President Ross Kerr has expressly asked if Rotary are able to help them, as we have over the past few years, and with this short notice. I have subsequently undertaken to organise this for them, with your help!

We have all the necessary hardware available (tents and BBQ trailer) to cover the exercise and Bendigo Bank have kindly offered to assist with the tents ( nil cost to PLRCSCC) and a BB advertising banner.

Please find details of the event and the expectations of Rotary volunteers in the email already sent to you.

TOBIAS IS BACK

Readers may remember that before Christmas we told you that Tobias Threadgold had secured a hotly contested place at the Summer Science Forum held in Canberra for some 400 keen students from all over Australia. Rotary is a major sponsor of this event but students pay for half their own way.

When Tobias left he thought that he would persue Veterinary Science as a career, now that he has had a closer look at what the Forum had to offer he is more convinced than ever and will study longer before he starts practising as a Vet.

The students were split into interest groups and undertook field trips to farms and other places that use science as part of their operational procedures .Tobias is passionate about nature and the environment, so his exposure to plant and animal biology really got his attention.

The students lived and studied in groups for two weeks and consequently have made friendships that will last through their working and social lives. Tobias has had 10 months exchange in Japan previously and equates his Summer Science Forum as the equivalent or better than his time in Japan.

They were able to use Skype to contact scientists on the Investigator a ship studying volcanic vents well south of Australia and contacted scientists operating the Great Hadron Collider. He was able to relate many of his experiences to Rotary members who had sponsored his trip to Canberra and claimed that this is the most eye opening and best experience he has ever had.

The Summer Science Forum runs each year and students are selected to attend on their ability, Rotarians will be able to assist anyone interested in trying to obtain a place.

WEIGHTY STORY.

Recently Rotary was visited by Robyn Rowsell from EFM Gym, who conducted a weight loss/gain competition over Xmas and decided that the money raised should go to the Pinery fire donations by way of Rotary. The competition involved members weighing in before and after Christmas, each having put up $10 that was either forfeited or kept depending on the results of the weigh in after Christmas, It seems that one of the crafty Rotarians secreted a 2kg weight in his pocket on the weigh in before Christmas but not after so it would appear that he had actually lost weight over the festive season. He obviously owned up in time to have his money included in the $225 that Ms Rowsell handed to President John Myers for inclusion with Rotary money.
Yesterday President John made a donation of $1225 to the Pinery fire recovery and the club is well on the way to planning a hands on visit as the needs become clearer.
President John also donated $500 to the Runaway Brides to go towards the Childrens Variety Charity at the same time, these donations were made by Electronic Transfer which eliminates the possibility of a photograph which usually happens at the handover of a cheque or cash.
Either way the good work still goes on, we are all fortunate that so many of our citizens are willing and able to volunteer and all of the people who support the volunteers by purchasing their goods and services.

FROM SHEARER TO WORLD STAGE

On Tuesday 19^th January local sculptor Ken Martin was guest speaker at the Rotary Dinner meeting. He outlined his life’s journey from Tailem Bend where he was a shearer to joining the group that came to Port Lincoln and formed Constantia a company that manufactured quality furniture, at least one piece of which finished up in Parliament House Canberra.

Ken turned his hand to carving some of the pieces created at Constantia and when that company ceased operation in 1986 Ken with the support of his wife decided to try his hand at wood sculpting for a living. After some 30 years of sculpting wood and then bronze he has completed some 50 major wood carvings and approx 60 significant bronzes, one of the later ones being Makybe Diva as seen on our foreshore.

Ken has done many smaller works on all manner of subjects and is exhibited in 7 Major Academies, all of his work is very labour intensive, and he has had to learn how different timbers colour with age so that the finished article will be the right colour. Some pieces have more than 100 different pieces of wood inlaid so that the finished article has the correct appearance.

He has travelled the world studying techniques, styles and materials, Ken has completed some significant commissions since Makybe Diva, a current problem is obtaining wood pieces big enough and good enough for his purposes. Our members enjoyed Ken’s story and intricate explanations of his methods. He quipped that to sculpt a horse is easy all you do is take a piece of wood big enough and knock off all the bits that don’t look like a horse.

2016 OUTBOUND ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT GRACE FRANCO

On Tuesday 8^th December Grace Franco was formally farewelled before her departure for Saint Pol sur Ternoise a town of some 5,500 people 240 kilometres north of Paris, for a twelve month study exchange.

Grace who is already an accomplished world traveller has undergone a twelve month preparation for this trip. Having undergone a rigorous selection process Grace was chosen for a number of reasons not the least being capable of representing herself, her family, Rotary and Australia.

Grace admitted to being a tad nervous as she will turn sixteen the day after she arrives in France, so she will obviously be giving up an important year of her life to further her education, after all this is what it is about. Her desire is to return and study to be a teacher, possibly of French and possibly in a regional school.

Grace’s grandfather Branco has been a Rotarian for more than forty years and between them the Franco’s senior and junior have hosted six exchange students over the years. Grace attends St Josephs School and has been Dux this year and last year as well as her academic achievements she is an active sportsperson.

When she returns she will return to years eleven and twelve at St Jo’s then onto University.

Rotarian past President Adrian Glover is Grace’s councillor and in his introduction pointed out that grace has been diligent in her preparation for her exchange. Club members wish her well and look forward to hearing about her adventures when she returns in twelve months.

We have arrived in Adelaide after a wonderful 24 hour sail (read motor). The sea was completely flat as a millpond with the stars and moon reflected in the water. It was like being suspended in space. I have never seen the like. 39 forecast for today which will wilt the Princess. So we may find a pub and hide.

VARIETY BASH ENTRANTS - RUNAWAY BRIDES

On Tuesday 17^th November Sandra Lukin and Deb White were the guest speakers at the Rotary dinner meeting; they will be a hard act for anyone to follow.

Sandra has competed in ten variety bashes and Deb four, the primary aim of the organisation is to raise money that is ultimately distributed to children and their families that are either disabled, isolated or somehow are missing out on what everyone else accepts as normal.

The organisation has raised in excess of $2 million for the past two years and that is a result of the ongoing efforts of the volunteers who work all year raising money and then the years culminates in an outback bash, and how.

It is obvious that participants have some fun but on the other hand they do an immense amount of good and bring a lot of relief to children and families that may otherwise miss out.

Sandra has raised over $250,000 over the years and at the time of writing is looking for two more interested women to participate in 2016. Each car is themed and her car is filled with Run Away Brides who seem to keep coming back, they are currently running a raffle for a camper trailer if you see it out and about please support this eminently worthwhile cause.

MELBOURNE CUP SWEEP 2015

Max Anderson was the winner of the Rotary Melbourne Cup sweep, the prize was one thousand dollars. Max was delighted as it is his wife’s birthday soon and his property suffered a bit of flood damage in the recent downpour. For a number of years Rotary has conducted a sweep based on the result of the Melbourne Cup. It is one of the many ways that the club raises money to continue the benevolent and other works that we undertake. The support of the local community in this regard is appreciated and makes the operation of Rotary Club easier when people contribute so readily. Some $3,000 was raised from the sweep and the Club will probably run it again next year. On some occasions the prize has gone out of town but this year it landed here.

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM

On 27^th October Rotary President John Myer presented local student Tobias Threadgold with a cheque for $1500.00 being approx half the cost of Tobias attending the national Youth Science Forum summer school.

The summer school is an intensive 10 day course run in Canberra for advanced students, to gain admission students undergo a rigorous entry application, many students nominate but only a few are accepted, it is some years since a student from Port Lincoln has been accepted.

The course is designed to allow participants to engage with leading scientists and companies to give them some idea of where their career paths may take them. The course initiated with rotary participation has been running for many years, it is always interesting hearing from the students when they return; they are exposed to many facets of science that they don’t experience at school.

Tobias is a student at the Port Lincoln High School and has just returned from a ten month student exchange in Japan where he was mainly concerned with the Japanese language but was able to participate in science classes, as a result of the exchange he is now doing some year eleven classes and some year twelve and will continue at school next year to make up for the missing ten months.

Rotarians look forward to hearing from Tobias when he returns from the summer science school and wish him well in his future endeavours.

Cleanseas Hatchery trip:

Our 20th October meeting we will be to Arno Bay to tour the hatchery facilities, thanks to Geoff Rayson. We will have a BBQ meal on site.

The bus will leave Pt Lincoln at 5.00pm and return about 10.30pm. The cost will be $25 a head. It will be a partners night.

ROTARY DONATES $5,000 TO MENTALLY FIT E.P. PROGRAM

On Tuesday 6^th Oct. The promoters of the EP Mentally Fit program Kirsty Treager, Sue Berry and Angela Cordon gave a progress report to the Port Lincoln Rotary club. The program was born some two years earlier when Rotary was approached to see how and if they could assist in the delivery of a pilot program on EP targeting those with depression and or some mental health problem that seemed to be being missed by other agencies.

Money was the driver that was needed to be added to the enthusiasm that Kirsty and Sue and other locals already had in abundance, it was decided that a fundraiser was the answer. That, coordinated by Angela Cordon from Country Health S A turned out to be a real success; some readers will remember the Life’s a Circus Gala Cabaret held at the Port Lincoln Racing Club last year that raised $24,000 that was matched by $24,000 from the Department of Education and Child Development

Armed with this money and the backing of the West Coast Youth and Community Support Service they set out to deliver the Choice Theory to Cummins, Tumby Bay and Port Lincoln. The Choice Theory has been developed by Dr William Glasser and in a nut shell it is aimed at teaching people who may be confused about life that THEY have choices and do not have to settle for second best.

The Mentally Fit E.P. program has been so successful here that some elements of it have been shared with other parts of Australia and indeed back to the Glasser organisation in America.

But all good things face hurdles and the main one of course is money, West Coast Youth and Community group are willing to continue support and with Rotary’s donation there is still a shortfall that it is hoped that other sections of the community will pick up.

The program started out dealing with adults but is being refined to present to Year eleven school groups as far away as Ceduna having already had success on Lower Eyre Peninsula.

It is a three by two hour set of lessons that teaches the need to speak more openly about depression and mental wellbeing issues and the fact that everyone is able to exercise choices.

It would be a real pity if this program folded from lack of funding; it has already produced excellent results.O

LOCAL YEAR FOUR STUDENT JOINS FIGHT AGAINST POLIO

On Tuesday 29^th Local boy Ayo Ajao donated $350.80 that he had raised to the Port Lincoln Rotary Club President. He chose as his year four project to raise money to aid the fight against Polio, he filled a jar with jellybeans and sold guesses as to the number of beans in the jar.

He sold these at the Navigators College which he and his sister Abby attend and at a Rotary Club meeting on the night that he handed the money over. It happens that Rotarian David Forbes had the correct guess at 375

It happened to be a night that the Rotary District Governor Doug Layng attended so he was able to see community participation in action. It is probably not a surprise that Ayo chose Polio as his target and Rotary as his partner, what is a surprise is that one so young has the foresight to participate in the ongoing battle against Polio.

His parents are Dr Kay Ajao and Nike Ajao who is a nurse at the Port Lincoln Hospital, Dr Kay is a very committed community supporter and for a man who is so busy is an active Rotarian often attending working bees and the like.

President John Myers was able to announce that there have been no new cases of Polio reported in Africa in the last twelve months and that the remaining trouble spots are Iran and Afghanistan, with the help of the Gates Foundation and a number of Governments Rotary International is still taking the fight right up to the remnants of the Polio threat, whatever support the local community feels it is able to give is greatly appreciated.

Rotary helps Longreach in time of drought

As you are aware many communities throughout Queensland have been suffering from ongoing drought compounding over the last three to four years. Families are now really struggling to meet the financial expenses of raising and educating their children. This crisis is extending beyond the farm gate into the kitchen and school rooms.

Longreach School of Distance Education has 190 students from E-Kindy to Year 10 living in a large catchment area of Central Western Queensland. As the school community struggles with day to day worsening pressure of dealing with drought, the LSODE P&C came up with a fundraiser called “Beds for Bush Kids” to support our students to attend mini-schools and school events

during these very challenging seasons.

Thank you for you help of the $1000 donation towards our ‘ Beds for Bush Kids’.!

New Boat for aquculture program at the school.

The Port Lincoln Rotary club in partnership with the Port Lincoln High School, each contributing $5000 each were able to gain a grant from the Port Lincoln Bendigo Bank to purchase a boat for the the high schools aquculture program. The school plans to expand its aquculture course to include boat handling and safety so that students are better prepared for work in the aquculture industry. The Port Lincoln High School will work with the other high schools in the area to ensure all benefit from the new boat.

The boat was handed over to the school at the school assembly held on the 2nd of July. The picture below was taken before the assemble and from left to right is Chris McGown (PLHS), Pat Callaghan, Phil Channon, Rotary President Adrian Glover and Mike Munro.

Firstly I must thank all those who assisted in any way to the preparations and the smooth running of the Change-over Dinner. I’m sure everybody enjoyed themselves.

My congratulations to Mike Munro on the presentation of his well deserved Paul Harris Fellow.

On Tuesday night I will put forward to the Club my ideas on the way ahead for this year. I would like committees to meet next week to make their plans for the year.

I would welcome ideas, even radical, on how to revamp our Golf Day, and on how to utilize our bequeath.

Exchange student final talk to Rotary

After almost a year in Port Lincoln, Rotary exchange student Augustin (Gus) Mathieu gave his final report to the Port Lincoln Rotary club as he will return home to Belgium next month.

During his year in Port Lincoln, Gus has been hosted by four different families (around 3 months each family). Rotary would like to very much thank the host families as the youth exchange program couldn't operate with out them. The youth exchange program not only provides a rewarding experience for the student but the host families also enjoy the experience.

Rotary rewards volunteers

Thanks to the generosity of Andrew Malouf from Westside Talent, Rotary was able to treat 10 volunteers from Community house to a night at the Nautilus Theatre to see the Seekers story. Community house chose volunteers that have committed time in the Men’s Group, Free Community Meal, Op Shop, Fundraising events and Tai Chi. Without the efforts from these volunteers many of these programs wouldn’t be able to be offered to the broader community. The show on Tuesday night was thoroughly enjoyed by all 10 volunteers with many so grateful as normally they would not be able to afford to attend such a performance. This donation of tickets offered to volunteers has be aligned with the upcoming National Volunteers Week which will be celebrated by many.

2015 PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS

Over 100 people attended this years awards to see 15 awardees from a range of local businesses presented with certificates and congratulated by Glenn Cooper (of Coopers Brewery fame).

Glenn spoke of his life in commerce; and highlighted the benefit to both employer and employee of the strive for excellence in the workplace.

Our Club has been involved in these awards for some 30 years and we find the effort each time is still very worthwhile and well received.

Thanks goes to Chris Cottrell and his team for a job well done.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR 2015

Former Port Lincoln tennis player Darren Polkinghorne was awarded the Rotary Sportsperson of the Year award last week.

Darren was unable to attend the presentation as he was at a tournament in Indonesia so his parents Paul and Julie Polkinghorne accepted the award on his behalf.

Darren’s recent achievements include back to back Burr Medals for the best and fairest tennis player living in South Australia as well as several quality tournament performances throughout the last few years.

Anzac Day Breakfast

ANZAC DAY BREAKFAST ROSTER.

Having been asked to assist the RSL by being one of the organisations cooking breakfast for after the Dawn Service we met with the other organisations and decided to work together. Last year the Boston Hotel Social Club cooked 300 breakfasts at the RSL Hall. Being the centenary year it's guesstimated that we may have to prepare 800 breakfasts. We have the use of the canteen at the Centenary Oval for serving, and we will cook at the back of the canteen. Boston Hotel have 2 large BBQs; plus the Lions and Rotary trailers. We will be set up Friday afternoon to enable us to turn up at the 'last minute' Saturday morn. Boston people will be there early, but if we could get there from 6.30 onwards that would be great. Please register your assistance by clicking here. You will find space to comment if you are going to the Dawn Service first. The cost of the breakfast is $5 going to the local RSL. Your help would be appreciated.

I have made a booking at the Tanunda Caravan Park for 17th - 20th March 2016. Superior one bedroom units are $124 a night. 8 metre powered sites are $39 a night. They require a deposit of one night's tariff to reserve the accommodation and or sites. I am prepared to try and manage this. We are leaving next week for 6 weeks but feel I can manage via e-mail. Rotary turns 110

February 23, 2015 marks Rotary’s 110^th anniversary, and serves as an opportunity to share the organization’s great work in your local community and around the globe. For more than a century, Rotary members have worked to provide clean water, improve maternal health, award scholarships, advance education and improve lives.

This year, also marks the 30^th anniversary of the PolioPlus program. Since the fight to end polio began, more than 2.5 billion children have been immunized, 10 million children have been saved from lifelong paralysis and 125 countries have been declared polio-free.

Rotary came to Australia in 1921 with the chartering of the Rotary club of Melbourne. Three years later they chartered the Rotary club of Adelaide in February 1924. The Rotary club of Adelaide chartered the Port Lincoln Rotary club in October 1949.

Port Lincoln Airport Open Day, Charity Runway Walk, February 15th

A fun family day was held at the Port Lincoln Airport on Sunday the 15 of February 2015. It was a major fund raising event for Variety the children charity. The District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula provided a rare opportunity to walk the Airport Runway and inspect a trainer jet, Aero Club’s displays, Airport facilities and aeroplane servicing facilities . Bands and food kept the adults entertained, a jumping castle, hurdy-gurdyand face painting helped the children have a fun day.

YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENTS VISIT VICTORIA.

Youth Exchange Students Gus Mathieu and Melanie Simonin (Gawler Light) France, were hosted in Victoria by the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central. They were toured around Melbourne and the Great Ocean Rd by their hosts,Dawn and Paul Walton, and also enjoyed the first day of the Aust. Open.

Gus recently gave us a talk and presentation on his visit which he greatly enjoyed.

Our thanks to the Waltons and the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central.

APPLICATION FOR TEAM MEMBERS:

We are seeking three Team members: a registered practising dentist, a dental hygienist and a dental assistant.

Team member candidates are required to:

Be in a development stage in their career
Be an Australian citizen.
Be in good health and have appropriate personal and professional skills.
Be able to travel for the period of the project.
Be currently actively employed in the vocational field of Dentistry
Be available for a briefing weekend from the May 23 - 24^th 2015

Another event well handled. Excellent job by Jim Kay, Juri Berzins, Ian Phillips and their team of helpers. I understand the fish was of excellent quality and well received by the punters. I heard that Kay was in attendance at each lunchtime. It was reported that had he not been a doctor he could well have made a successful career in Sales !

This session is for the whole community where you will hear from representatives or be able to seek information from a variety of services who may be able to assist to manage Utilities, some services attending the Port Lincoln session are the Energy and Water Ombudsman SA, Department of State Development Energy Advisory Service and Financial Counsellors, there will also be a variety of information available to collect. This is the only program of this kind currently available and at this time it will only visit a town once throughout its funding.

A team of 2 are rostered per fortnight to keep the Bunnings vending stocked. You can work as a team of two or do one week each by yourself. It is an easy job and you have a lot of flexibility on the day and the time you choose to do it. The Christmas dinner in the park is fully catered by Damien including sweets.

Members and guest need only bring drinks and equipment like chairs, table, plates, glasses and cutlery.

The forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a maximum of 24c, it is expected to be 18c at 6:30pm dropping to 14 by 9:30.

MORE INTERESTING INDUSTRY SPEAKERS AT MEETINGS.

As part of a diverse range of speakers organised by Pat Callaghan we have recently heard from Kane Williams and Lee Stewart. Kane Williams spoke about the local Abalone industry and them conducted members on a tour of the factory. Lee Stewart told us about the salvaging of the sunken 'Apollo S' and showed many interesting photos. Thanks Kane and Lee. Go to 'read more' for photos.

Defibrillator to Kirton Bowls club

The Rotary Club of Port Lincoln donated an Automatic External Defibrillator to the Kirton Bowling Club.

At Kirton's usual Friday night tea on Friday 7th November 2014, Rotary Immediate Past President Bill Watkins and Rotary Secretary Dave Gillies attended to present the Defibrillator to the Kirton Bowling Club.

Bill Watkins told the members present that whilst the AED machine is designed to be user friendly to non-trained bystanders, Rotary considered it important to provide backup training to the bowlers to ensure that they would be confident and comfortable if the occasion arose for the AED to be used.

Kirton President Darryl Hage responded sincerely thanking the Port Lincoln Rotary Club for their generosity.

I would like to thank the willing band of Rotarians who assisted in making the BBQ for Novita’s Family Fun Day in Wellington Square on Sunday 2 November , the success it was for their organisers.

Firstly, thanks to Greg Jones for bringing the Bendigo Bank tents down to the site on time.

He had already done a great job with the 3 tents at the Anglican Strawberry Fair on the Saturday

Rotary gives the bowls clubs a Defibrillator

Sudden Cardiac Arrest strikes around 30,000 people every year, that is on average 82 people every day in Australia alone!

Sudden Cardiac Arrest can occur to anyone of any age, even if they have no underlying heart conditions.
The first 3-5 minutes are vital, if an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is attached and used within these first precious minutes, the casualty will have a 50% - 75% chance of revival.
Every minute after that will decrease revival rate by a further 10%. Paramedics will bring an AED in their ambulance, but vital time could be lost.

Rotary purchased the Defibtech Lifeline, Semi-Automatic Defibrillator because it is manufactured to military standards to resist such things as dust, water, shock and vibration and therefore can be used on the bowling green in any weather.

The AED machines are designed to be user friendly to non-trained bystanders but Rotary considered it important to provide backup training to the bowlers to ensure they were confident and comfortable in using the defibrillator.

Kylie Malota from Port Lincoln Training will provide free training to the bowls club members.

Rotary supports school sailing team

The Port Lincoln Rotary club provided financial support to the Saint Joseph school sailing team to assist with some of the costs of competing in the Interdominion series in New Zealand in September this year. This support is in part recognition of the teams performance at a National level and because they are competing in an international event.

The 2013 St Joes Sailing Team won the Rotary Sportspersons Award and were presented with a trophy earlier this year.

The 2014 team has recently returned from the Nationals at Sydney where they finished 2nd and were invited to compete at the Interdominions in New Zealand. The team decided to defend their Interdominion series title which they won in 2013 in Brisbane.

Rotary has again agreed to help with the RELAY FOR LIFE event on the 25th and 26th of October. We will be erecting both Bendigo and Rotary tents on Saturday morning before the event starts and cooking a breakfast on Sunday (the food will be supplied, all we have to do is cook it). Past President of the Port Lincoln Rotary club, Bill Watkins presented a cheque for $2000 to Riding for the Disabled. Riding for the Disabled President Jodie Porter said the money would go towards their long term plan to have an all weather arena so their program was not disrupted by bad weather.

Another Youth Project support by Rotary

The Port Lincoln Rotary Club has been assisting the West Coast Youth Services and Youthoria in repairing the damaged seats in the picture theatre. A full days working bee was held at the theatre where almost all of the seats had to be removed and re attached to the floor with more substantial anchoring. The theatre seats have been given a healthy steam clean and a industrial vacuum cleaner purchased to assist with theatre cleaning, all donated from the Port Lincoln Rotary Club. A club spokesperson said it while the picture theatre is a worthwhile project to help Youthoria and the community it is a pity funds are wasted to repair vandalism and unnecessary damage at the theatre. Rotary is alive and active in Port Lincoln with an assortment of ongoing projects . Anyone interested in joining Rotary and working for the betterment of our community please contact a Rotary Member.

The event was run over two Saturdays and was successful in raising $1,371.10 for the cancer council of SA. This sum has been transferred to the Cancer Council of SA.

Ninety percent of funds raised goes into cancer research and the remainder towards support services here in South Australia.

Bylaw changes - One members opinion.

Bylaws review. 2^nd June 2014

Members,

I do not think that many members have looked at the proposed bylaws. It is not an easy read and most members just do not have any concern She’ll be right mate! That is all very well until something goes wrong and then the fight starts. We now have considerable funds within our club and I believe that all members are equal and have equal rights in determining the application of the club funds, within reason.

One of the important changes is that we can now alter our bylaws quite simply as long as it is within the spirit of District and RI. We can fix a problem, probably, after the event.

I have some proposals for alteration that I would like to put to you for consideration before we take a vote on the proposed bylaws on the 10th of June.

1.Article 1 (6) .

Year:The 12-month period that begins on 1 July.

As our fiscal period is 1 June to 31 May of each year I would propose the article to read: .

“Year: The club year is 12-month period that begins on 1 July. The club financial year is 12-month period that begins on 1 June.”

2.Article 3 (3).

Section 3 — A vacancy on the Board (short or long term) shall be filled by the remaining members of the Board.

The wording may be made a little easier to understand by a modification. I propose that it should read:

“A vacancy on the Board (short or long term) shall be filled from the membership by the remaining members of the Board.

3. Article 3 (4).

Section 4 — A vacancy of any officer-elect position or director-elect position shall be filled by the remaining members of the Board-elect.

4. Article 3 (5)

Section 5 — Terms of office for each role shall be 12 months except the president elect and the past president who will serve for six months in that role.

This is proposed in Article 4 “Duties of the Board” however i believe it should be in this Article as it specifies “Term of Office”. I propose the section should read:

Section 5 — Terms of office for each role shall be 12 months except the president elect, whom will serve an additional six months on the board immediately before taking office and the immediate past president whom will serve on the board an additional six months after holding office.

5 Article 4 (2) Duties of the Board could read “Duties of Board Members”

6. Meetings (1)

Section 1 — Annual Meeting. An annual meeting of this club shall be held no later than 30th November to elect the officers and directors who will serve for the next Rotary year.

In order to comply with our standard Club Constitution and the law of the Consumerr Affairs of SA we need to change the Annual Meeting date to conform with the law. We need to have our Annual Meeting before October 31st

The Constitution states: Section 2 — Annual Meeting. An annual meeting for the election of officers of the Club shall be held within five months after the end of its financial year as provided in the bylaws.

I propose that Section 1 read: Annual Meeting. An annual meeting of this club shall be held no later than 31th October to elect the officers and directors who will serve for the next Rotary year.

7. Meetings (4)

Section 4. Club assembly meetings are to be held at least twice in any club year.

We have traditionally held a “Club Assembly” meeting twice a year, once following the “Annual Meeting” in December and then one at the end of the club year where Reports of each committee and others such as treasurers report are received. I believe that all meetings are a “Club Assembly” and we should dispense with this term in favour of an “Annual Reports meeting” or some other name.

The other purpose of the “Club Assembly was to air grievances and special business (whatever that means). I believe that every club meeting be it a regular meeting or a fireside meeting (Monthly committee meeting) could be an opportunity to raise any business, although we should reserve Committee meeting nights as the night to raise general business in order to save discussion when visitors are present.

I propose Section 4 should read Annual Reports. Directors and the Treasurer are to table their annual reports no later than the 2^nd Tuesday of June each year.

I propose an additional Section 5 to read: Committee meetings. Each club committee meet once a month.

8. Article 9 (7)

Section 7 — The fiscal year is from 1 July to 30 June.

This is not correct.

I propose that Article 7 read: fiscal year is from 1 June to 31 May.

9. Article 10 (6)

Section 6 — The club may elect honorary members proposed by the Board.

It has been resolved by the club that members who choose to leave active membership after 30 years of service or who are Paul Harris fellows automatically become honorary members of the club. I would propose that this be reflected in the bylaws here and Section 6 to read:

The club may elect honorary members proposed by the Board. Members who have served 30 years or more as a Rotarian or has received the honour of Paul Harris fellow automatically become honorary members of the club.

10. Article 11

Article 11 Resolutions

Any resolutions or motions to commit the club to any position or action shall first be reviewed and approved by the Board. If resolutions or motions are first offered at a club meeting, they shall be sent to the Board without discussion. Recommendations first offered at a club meeting shall be discussed by the club prior to submission to the Board for its consideration (should the proponent so wish).

This Article specifies “Resolutions” but does not specify “Recommendations”. We could change the article to reflect it by naming it “Resolutions and Reommendations” or we could rename it “Club Business” or have two articles.

Anyway,business of the club should possibly come from Committee meetings, initially, rather than from the floor at regular meetings or from assembly meetings. This would eliminates the element of surprise and also give the opportunity of full and free discussion in the privacy of the committee rather than in a somewhat public environment before a recommendation or motion is sent to the board for further consideration.

In any case there should be every opportunity of full and free discussion at a meeting other than the meeting at which it was raised if it is a general meeting. This affords time to think through a motion or recommendation rather than rushing it through.

11. Donations.

Article 12 Donations

All proposed donations and charitable gifts to any person or organisation in excess of $5,000.00 shall be presented to the club for formal approval prior to payment by the Board.

I think if members are happy with the dollar value then there should be a limit to the under the limit total spend per annum. Say $20K.

Rotary recognises sporting excellence on the EP

The Rotary Sportsperson of the Year for Eyre Peninsula 2014 goes to St Joseph’s School Sailing Team.

They are the current National School Sailing Team Champions.

July last year, the Australian Schools Racing Championships were held in Hobart. There were 24 teams from all over Australia competing on the Derwent River and after 204 preliminary races St Joes were on top of the ladder.

Hey Adrian, Margaret and my dear host club,
Been too long since i wrote you guys! I've been ridiculously busy between work, school and music. I'm still studying and hopefully graduating next year as a travel agent and a tourist guide. I still work at our family's clothing store, though at the moment I'm running my own little outlet for a couple of months. When i got back, a band found me and asked me to sing for them so ever since i've had gigs at concerts, birthdays, weddings etc, i really enjoy it!
My familys all good. even though i moved out to my own apartment, i still keep going to mum's and empty the fridge and do my laundry haha!
My little sister Linda just turned 1 and she's growing up so fast. My brothers very keen preparing his own exchange, hes dying to come to Australia next year! That way i would have a great excuse to break Adrian's "don't come back before we recover from your stay"-rule and visit Aus again haha!
Although I will do it anyway, i miss all you guys, my families and my aussie home more and more everyday! I've been sorting out my future plans a lot, but i suppose it would be the best if i came back after i graduate, so i could stay as long as i want and maybe even work there for a while...

Anyway, I hope you guys are all good, hows things in Lincoln? What you and Marg have been up to, travelling this year as well?
I saw on facebook that Chloe was on the safari tour, bet she had a blast as usually, seems like shes loving life in Lincoln, tell her i said hi!

Thank you the Peter, Kay, Trevor and Geoff for cooking and serving on the day with help from Greg and Brett for the set up and Chris for the pack up. Also thanks to Bill Stenson for pre event organization.

Sale of sausages took place in waves during the short breaks in the event with the greatest sold at the mid event break. Expected sales at the end of the event and during presentations were less than expected which left about 100 cooked sausages left over. Whilst this may seem to be a waste it only represents about $30 in costs.

Takings for the day were $479.34 and I expect a profit for the event to be $300 to $350.

We have a few members that don't have email access. Unfortunately they do miss some information that is distributed via email, eg the weekly bulletin. I am looking a member to be an email buddy for member that doesn't have email.

The way it would work is:

I will put your email address in clubrunner for your email buddy. An email sent to your buddy (from anyone in the club) would arrive on your email but it would have you buddies name on it. You would therefore receive two bulletins, one for you and one for your buddy and they would have some differences. You would print it off and pass it on the next time you see your buddy. It would work best if you do have some regular contact with your email buddy. So if you do have regular contact with any member that doesn't have emai, please consider being their email buddy.

Mount Ive Station ANZAC weekend April 2014

Rotary is more than community BBQs and fund raising.

The trip from was undertaken by 19 of our mob and 9 from Roxby and 1 Whyalla all decending onto Mount Ive at various times. Some towed caravans others towed camper vans and some chose to stay in on site accomodation while Greg and Jackie arived by his ultralight with a 3 hour journey at 16 degrees at 10000 feet.

Sandy Sumption our assistant Governor for for Zone 8 set the scene by introducing us to each other and to Ratus Rat aka Muster Mouse who was the our muster mascot. The first priority was a camp fire which never went out all week end followed closely by the opening of beer bottles and wine bottles which also really never stopped for the weekend. Friday arived, which was ANZAC day, to the sound of heavy rifle fire at 5.50am which woke the troops for the dawn service. Some campers were not aware of the planned rifle shots including an ex police man who hit his head getting out of his van looking for the massacre. The service was led by Noel Jenkins who related his story of visiting the Western front to visit his relatives grave sites and then various people gave their reasons for being at the service and the Last Post was provided by way of Margaret Jenkins's iPad. There were around 40 for the service from around the camp. Breakfast was served compliments of Rotary.

there were various four wheel drive tracks around the station that most people took advantage off including one to Lake Gairdner. Friday night was our turn to provide the meal which was a seafood theme. Oysters were donated by Bill Stenson, Juri provided the King George whiting and calamari while Ron & Bev donated the prawns for the cocktails and the chips. KB cooked up his usual storm of dumplings and despite the red wine he got it right.A feast fit for a king. Saturday night was Roxby's turn and they turned on a magnificent selection of camp oven cooking which also provided the bubble and squeek the next morning. That nights entertainment was a roast of KB and one of the Roxby members. It was very funny.

What a great (heavy) week end. We have planned to do it all next year at Spear Point near Pt Augusta.

EYRE PEN. BUSHFIRE HELP.

Hi Rotarians

We are looking for at least 5 or six or more volunteers to go up to Lake Hamilton Station for the week 14^th of April to help the Nosworthy family repair and rebuild fences damaged or destroyed in the fire of Feb 2014. I thought we could leave Lincoln about 9- 30am – 10 am on the 14^th and return after lunch on the Thursday, bearing in mind it is Easter week. Bill Nosworthy has shearers quarters to sleep 6 people and he said those wanting to bring vans or trailers would’nt be a problem.

I have also spoken with Michelle Nuske at Hillsea Station which also suffered extensive fence damage. Michelle said they have a house which we could use also to stay in while we are up there,it has kitchen facilities and fridge etc plus shower and toilet,she also said there is a nice area for vans by the Hillsea homestead. The Nuske’s would really appreciate help also and Michelle said she would love to supply all meals other than breakfast to the volunteers. Because of shearing and crutching at their various properties they would like us to go up there in the first or second week of May, so we will see what we can organise for then and what numbers we have available.

Our role will most probably be rolling up a bit of old netting ,tying on new wire and putting up post’s or droppers (not digging post holes) so it does’nt sound to stressful, Michelle even mentioned throwing the fishing gear in as it is close to Sheringa Beach.

If you have fencing pliers and a hammer and gloves they would be useful.

Hope we can muster up a couple of crews to help out as it will be good for Rotary Fellowship as well as helping someone in need out, if you need additional information give me a call by phone or email.

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED FOR COMMUNITY BBQ BY DOM. CARE SURVEY MEDICAL STUDENTS

Community BBQ - OT Students Monday 7th of April from 12 - 3pm

Chaps,

I received an email with its attachment inviting Rotary members to a Community BBQ to be held by the OT students who came to speak to us recently about a project they are doing regarding Dom Care services in Port Lincoln.

I made the suggestion that Rotary may be in a position to cook the BBQ for them ( using the Rotary BBQ Trailer ) and provide the Bendigo Bank tent(s) for the event also.

I would think that the BBQ would require no more than 3 - 4 members to cook. The Students are providing all of the meats & bread etc.

Would it be best to speak to the club at Tuesday night’s meeting to see if there is any interest in providing this service to the students?

The Port Lincoln Rotary club held its meeting at the aircraft hanger of rotarian Kevin Warren and had a close look at his L39 Albatros fighter jet trainer that he uses for Port Lincoln Jet Adventures.

They are a family owned and operated company and pride themselves in offering a totally awesome experience for people who would like to experience the once in a lifetime experience of flying in a Jet Fighter without all the hype and sensationalism of some other adrenalin sports and experiences, but with the care and professionalism that comes from operating a successful aviation business for many years.
The principles of the business are Kevin and Margaret Warren who live in Port Lincoln, South Australia and are the ones who will be looking after you to ensure you have a flight to remember. Kevin and Margaret ran their own very successful Aerial Agricultural business for over 20 years.
Kevin will be your pilot. He is highly experienced with over 20,000 hours on a wide range of aircraft.

Ted Scholz is a 90 year old, long term resident of Pt Lincoln. He lives alone, is self supporting, drives, does his own shopping, cooking etc. To keep himself busy he sits in his shed repairing electric hand tools. Unfortunately we lost Jim this morning. His battle with cancer was a long and painful one but now he is in a better place. Jim was a valuable contributor to our club and for those of us that served with him in Rotary know that he had Rotary stamped on his heart. It was because the man stood by his principles in life that he was known as "Bullant" and because he stood by his convictions that he made the decision to leave our club. There are many of us that believed that Jim got an unfair judgment. A Past President and Paul Harris Fellow Jim's record speaks for itself and Port Lincoln and Rotary has lost a good man. RIP.

We are 4^th year OT students from the University of South Australia. We are here in Port Lincoln for 9 weeks working with Domiciliary Care on a community development project. Domiciliary Care provides home-based services that aim to help people who need assistance to live at home and to be as independent and supported as possible.

We are interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions in relation to the questions below. Please refer to our information sheet for more information about the project.

Congratulations to Tom Bascombe and Dr Graham Fleming on their awards.

Tom Bascombe O.A.M. has been recognised for his significant service to the community of the Eyre Peninsula. Tom was President of the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln in 1977 and a member 1968-1999. Tom is currently an Honorary Member of the club. Tom has volunteered his time to many other community organizations.

Doctor Graham Fleming A.M. has been recognised for his significant service to medicine in rural South Australia and as an advocate in the field of mental health and suicide prevention. Dr Fleming has assisted the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln on many occasions in the past to run mental health forums to help break down the stigma around mental illness.

DISASTER AID AUSTRALIA ('DAA') & nbsp; (1-Attachment)

Right on the heel of a horrendous October earthquake, the Philippines was ravaged the following month by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the "deadliest Philippines Typhoon on record" that killed over 6,000 with bodies still being found. Disaster Aid Australia ('DAA'), a Rotary Club project and part of Disaster Aid International ('DAI') has been on the ground since, with volunteer DART’s (Disaster Aid Response Team members) working with respected local NGO, Balay Mindanaw Foundation ('BMF') in the Bohol Island region that was devastated by these unprecedented events. ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN (ROMAC) (1-Attachment)

Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children is a charity (under the Rotary International banner) which provides lifesaving and dignity restoring surgery to children from developing countries. To date we have treated 365 children for a variety of life threatening and dignity destroying illnesses. Last year alone we provided treatment for 48 children, most of who came from countries in the Oceania Region that are part of our Australian and New Zealand Rotary Districts.

IMVS VOLUNTEER DRIVERS

IMVS Port Lincoln are currently seeking volunteer drivers. Job entails calling at medical centres and hospitals to collect blood samples and return them to IMVS at the Pt Lincoln Hospital. The run takes a morning or an afternoon, taking the IMVS vehicle and going around Lincoln, then to Cummins and Tumby Bay and home. Most drivers do one trip on a shift of their choice on a weekly, fortnightly, three weekly, or monthly basis. Obviously there may be months when you're not available.

The official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, which marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Sydney Cove, New South Wales and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Philip. In contemporary Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.

In 1965, Roger Drake commenced his supermarket retailing career with the Coles Myer Group. In 1974, after 9 years at Coles Myer, Roger established his own business by purchasing his first store for AU$29,000 in Mitcham, a southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia – a three-lane supermarket called Jack & Jill’s with 4 employees. After three successful years, Roger opened a larger supermarket at Torrensville, in the western suburbs of Adelaide. FIRE FUND - Water Tank signage

Rotary supporting Eyre Peninsula Communities with bushfire infrastructure.

The Rotary Club of Port Lincoln has completed a programme of sign writing and placing memorial plaques onto seven emergency fire water tanks around the peninsula. The Club paid for the tanks to be installed at airstrips at Cummins, Lock, Wudinna, Buckleboo, Kimba, Cowell and Cleve. Funding the infrastructure was made available through the $500,000 raised by the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln following the disastrous 2005 Lincoln and district bush fire.

It was considered top priority to provide these tanks and other infrastructure as an emergency source of water mainly for feeding water bomber aircraft in the event of a fire but also for fire tenders. The club members combined this work with an inspection tour by regional operations commander of the Country Fire Service Mr, John Probert. Mr Probert identified several logistical problems which will be rectified to facilitate ease of use by the CFS.

The four Rotarians, Glenn Karutz, Allan Burrows, Des Pinson and Chris Stone of the Port Lincoln Club were proud to place large Rotary International signs on the tanks as well as large signage indicating the use of the tanks is for emergency only.

Once you have logged on you will see the “ADMIN” clickable sign at the top of the home page on the right above the banner. Click onto it and it will take you to the administration page.

Why do we need to change and why do we need a web site?

A few dedicated Rotarians put a lot of work into getting our club to run efficiently through the use of modern communications but for this to work the way it is designed to work we need all members to be able to feel comfortable in using our internet website. It may take a little bit of work on your part to make it easy for you to use and the administration to function.

You see, the easiest way to have good communications is to have all of our club information available to all members at any time in the one location and all of the information being accurate and timely.

There is a lot of Club and Rotary information and you may only need a fraction of it in your day to day Rotary life such as the details of the next meeting and what your particular duties are but you may need to know how to run one of our major fundraising activities or get involved with district or RI and so whatever your part the information you require should be available to you.

So, The first thing you need to be able to do is to be informed about the next meeting or event and what your part, if any, you will be playing in the success of it. This information is now made available to you electronically by your weekly e Bulletin which is emailed to you. To access it you need to check your email in box once a week and you should print it and give a copy to your wife or partner to remind you of what you are doing this week. On the bottom of the personalised bulletin is a list of jobs you are to do.

TUNARAMA 2014

Tunarama is recognised as one of South Australia’s outstanding long weekend of festivities and certainly Port Lincoln’s most entertaining event of the year. It is on again over the long weekend of January 2014 and The Rotary Club of Port Lincoln will again have the Tuna stall selling cooked Tuna and Kingfish to the public to raise funds for worthwhile causes on the Eyre Peninsula.

Audrey Patricia (Mackie) Brunt (16/10/29 - 22/7/13) was the wife of Frank Brunt also deceased. Came to Port Lincoln from Western Australiua in 1957. She was a member of the Thursdays ladies group art club. Worked at Bears newsagency for many years. Worked at the Pier Hotel. Was one of the original Heartbeat members along with Ray Eden. They lived in Alexander Cr. She also left money to the Guide dogs and the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Organisation.

Linda Bootherstone – Bick will spoke at the Port Lincoln Rotary meeting of the 19th of November.

Author of the book ‘ Where Angels Fear to Tread’

Sixteen months of diverse adventures and experiences in Spain and Portugal, Africa, Ukraine, USA and Canada.

The book begins when Linda has a chance meeting with a fellow musician, Georgia. She is an attractive blonde Canadian who is overcoming her midlife crisis by setting out on a physical and spiritual exploration of Europe and Africa. They begin their shared adventure by leaving for Morocco on Linda´s 18 year old BMW motorcycle complete with Georgia´s Celtic harp and Linda´s tin whistle.

After many varied experiences, including a hike amongst the Berbers in the high Atlas mountains they part company in the south and Georgia continues her journey solo to face the dangers of the Mauritanian desert.

After a brief visit to her family in England to help with the unexpected death of her mother, she completes a lone motorcycle trip of over 7,000 miles to the Ukraine. During this journey she dodges bandits in Rumania and whistles her way through politically sensitive areas of Moldova and the Crimea.

Finally after a frightening experience in her own home, she takes a Greyhound bus in midwinter across the USA to Canada to meet Georgia again 16 months after their parting in Morocco.

Money Spinner Put to work

Our money spinner machine has been placed outside Forbes Furniture on Tasman Terrace. The staff of Forbes furniture will deploy the machine during their store hours.

The idea of it is to release two coins through a perspex shoot by two individuals on opposite sides of the machine and then the first one to enter the bin should in theory get their wish granted but it does not seem to have a guarantee with it.

Jarod Stolz was one of the first to try it out and he reckons it is a winner. It should raise more money for our many community project.

Home Hospice - position November 2013

Home Hospice in Port Lincoln

The financial support for the Home Hospice has been excellent. To date the community has raised the following funds:

Mike Leech $5,000, Rotary - Port Lincoln $10,000, Bendigo Bank - Port Lincoln $50,000, Bendigo Bank - Cummins $25,000, Book Bazaar $22,000 and Giving Envelopes $4,500 - a total of $116,500. These funds will be held by the EP Community Foundation and invested until needed.

The concept has obviously been seen by the community as a very important addition to the current services provided to seriously ill people and their families.

The Home Hospice will provide only 'end of life care' in people's homes if this is wanted by the terminally ill patient and their families and the circumstances are suitable. The aim is to supplement the nursing care provided by Country Health with care at night, weekends and public holidays, but just for their last few days. This care will be provided by Registered Nurses and will take away from the families the responsibility for medication and nursing care. Patients and their families in this situation can usually manage up until the last week or two and then the patient needs specialized care to make them as comfortable as possible. A palliative care nurse's task is not to prolong life but to make the final days as pain and stress free as possible and enable quality time for the families.

Now that the funds have been raised, Luana Kraft, the Eyre Peninsula Palliative Care Co-ordinator for Country Health and a Board member of the Home Hospice is assessing agencies that already provide contract staff for home care to check if they would employ local registered nurses to provide the service for those patients selected by Luana. A local service provider has said they will take the proposal to their Board. As they already have a contract with Country Health, if they agree, the service should be able to be implemented almost immediately.

Stenross BBQ Kitchen upgrade

Another successful working bee and the project is one step closer to completion. The Stenross Museum BBQ kitchen is taking shape with the new floor being polished ready for sealing and the walls being clad with waterproof lining. The team did a fantastic job and I must thank Geoff Rayson for helping with floor on Tuesday and on Wednesday Scott, Dave, Chris C, Adrian, Pat, and Geoff for fixing and flushing the lining.

The great thing about doing ahands on project such as this is the opportunity for members to get together to show off their talents in building stuff. There is also a chance to have a good old chat and a beer after the days work, in a jovial

atmosphere. Thanks guys, I enjoyed the experience even though I was used up running around looking for left hand screws with a 32tpi spc in bright anodised finish for Scott. I reckon I did 100km around town getting things organised for him.

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum

Port Lincoln Rotary club is assisting the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum with the construction of a BBQ kitchen on their eastern varandar.

The walls were lined with cement board sheeting on Thursday the 31st of October by Scott Stenson, Dave Gillies, Pat Callaghan, Chris Stone, Adrian Glover and Geoff Rayson ready for painting and or tiling.

The floor was laid with the cameo appearance of Kev Burner early in October. With Kev Berner being the master of ceremonies and Ron chief supervisor the rest of us did as we were told. Barrow boys were John Myers, Greg Honeychurch, Juri Burzens and Chris Stone with Geoff Rayson getting into the mud with every chance.

The Port Lincoln Rotary club has had 3 working bees in recent time to get the park ready for summer. The park is a popular place for a picnic or BBQ and is used by locals and visitor alike. The Rotary club assists the City Council with development and maintenace of the park.

Melbourne Cup Trifecta sweep

The Port Lincoln Rotary club is selling Melbourne Cup trifecta sweep tickets again this years as a fund raiser for community projects. The tickets are $2.00 each and with the 24 runners in the cup there are 2024 different combinations of the 3 horse numbers on each ticket. To win the $1000.00 prise your numbers must match the first 3 place getters (boxed) in the race ( that is the numbers in any order.) Ticket sales are going well with the last tickets being sold outside the Port Lincoln Post Office on race day.

Vending Machines October 2013

Vending Machine Project Lives On

With the opening of the new Port Lincoln airport the Port Lincoln Rotary club has relocated and expanded the number of vending machine to 6.

We now operate a vending machine at the TAFE campus, a coffee machine at Stenross museum, a combined snack and drink machine at Home Hardware, two vending machines along with one coffee machine at the new Bunnings store.

It is hoped that these relocated vending machines will raise signicante funds for Rotary community projects as they have in the past.

A Busy Bee is organised for Sun morning commencing 9.30. Tools required ; rake. or leaf rake, spade, gloves, chainsaw,blower vac, and anything else you'd like to bring.

Money Spinner for Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln Rotary club has purchased a money spinner to go on in front of Forbes Funiture store on Tasman terrace. The money spinner is like a wishing well but has both entertainment and science combined. Coins can be fed into the shute, this results in the coin spinning on a long downward a sprial. There are two shutes, one shute will make the coins spin clockwise and the other anti clockwise. You can put coins in both shute and see which one gets to the bottom first. We are hopefull this will raise money for cummunity projects and will be fun for the kids and adults alike

The crew was a little slow to get going but once they got the act together it all flowed like clockwork. Hat Day is an initiative of Australian Rotary Health, the largest non-government funder of mental illness research in Australia. The Port Lincoln Rotary club will have a hat night at our meeting on the 15th of November to raise funds and awareness of mental health.

Our Hat Night is designed to be light-hearted and imformative. Members are asked to wear a hat, no matter how outrageous and support Rotary mental health.

Murray was a member of the Alice Springs Rotary club between 1983 and 1988 before moving to Port Lincoln. He was a member of the Port Lincoln Rotary club from 1989 to 2013.

Stillborn Babies Memorial: Happy Valley Cemetery

This Memorial Project, envisaged by Gwen Parkinson, a late member of the of the Southern Eyre Peninsula Family History Group and subsequently planned and instigated by the remaining members, has been partially funded by a generous donation by the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln.

Rtn David Johnston has been managing the project, and working with Bob Hanchant (Builder) and Mark Thorpe (concretor), over the last few weeks with Site preparation, excavation and shuttering for concrete works, concrete pours and plastering. The final pour will take place on Monday 23 September with the finishing details to follow and surrounds, plantings and installation of a new bench seat for those visiting for some contemplation.

The Rotary Club of Port Augusta President Colin Davies with his Rotarian wife Helen, brought current Inbound RYE Student Erik Atmann (from Germany) whom they are hosting, for a visit to Port Lincoln

Colin, who is 2014-15 District 9500 Treasurer was here to give an update to District YEC Chairman David Johnston on the new District 9500 budgeting system for the District Committees.

While hear, Helen and Erik tried Dragon boat paddling with the Port Lincoln Dragons Abreast dragon boat team.

City to Bay Fun Run

Port Lincoln Rotary members take part in the 41st City to Bay fun run event.

Craig Faulkhead and Dave Gillies did the 12Km run and both improved on their times from last year. Craig started in the first group (the sub 60 minute group) and covered the 12 km in 52 minutes and 45 seconds. Dave started in the main field and managed to cover the 12 km in 59 minutes 41 seconds.

Dianne Gillies did the 12 km walk, she also achieved a personal best for the event covering the distance in around 1 hour 34 minutes..

Letter from Jules

Hello Rotarians

I’m back! No, not completely, just my voice, but should be enough by now.

Well, long time since I left Australia, and now I am feeling it. Eight months ago I arrived and everything changed: like moving houses on the exchange, readapting myself to the new situation. Some changes like no more school, friends at uni, family not knowing how to treat you- as they realize I’m not the same Jules who left a year before- and the sensation of leaving a part of me in Australia were a few of the things I faced and am still facing till now.

Wasn’t easy to be back home in the first 2 weeks but soon I started some activities. I had a temporary job on MTV channel being one of those people who walks in the background of the tv shows, like an extra. That was a good experience, but I needed to start the course for uni so I stopped this and now I’m close to finish. My old plans were study chemistry engineering but I found out that’s not what I really want to do. I am choosing for Oceanography, that is the study of the ocean, lakes, rivers, marine biology, waves, snow, streams and everything that includes water. It’s definitely a different and unusual subject around here, my family is afraid about me finding a job or having a career but from what I want, isn’t Brazil my focus of country to live. So yes, there is still- and even stronger- the possibility of coming back to Aussie Land in the future, studying the great barrier reef or some sharks in the south. We will see.

Last July I had the amazing experience of introducing to my family one of my loveliest aussie families, the Glovers. They came visit me for a few days which were really busy around the massive city I live in. I loved the visit, was so good to see again some of my Australia and show them my Brazil. I hope they got to know better who I am and had a good time! Also, one of my aussie friends came to see me too, and I hope more come, I’m loving it.

Now, I can understand what I heard about the re-adaptation after exchange. It’s hard to don’t feel like part of your world anymore, don’t fit in with old friends and don’t like the same sports, for an example. The group I spend most of the time now is full of ex-exchange students and we all agree about this sensation of not fit in again in the home country. “Home is now a bit less home” maybe resumes this idea. So yes, Australia really changed me, but even been hard to be back, I don’t regret any moment of my experience last year.

Actually, I want to thank you all again, but this time for the chance to open my eyes for this new world. It doesn’t matter if this new life stage is hard to handle, what I lived has no price and I’m sure I am a better person after all.

Not extending myself- other ways I’ll cry- just wanted to leave a see you later for the club,

And remember to take care of the piece of my heart I left there in Lincoln!

Last night I was asked to be seargeant at short notice and as such, I was struggling to find material to make the fine session interesting but in my usual rush to get the job done I failed to think ( I can hear Noel now) about how members would feel about being asked to stand up and be humiliated for not having paid the annual subs to date. Craniofacial unit

Bronwyn Chant spoke at the Port Lincoln Rotary club meeting on the 3rd of September about the Austrilain Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide.

The Australian Craniofacial Unit led by pioneering craniofacial surgeon, Professor David J David AC, has been caring for those suffering craniofacial ( head and face ) abnormalities since 1975. The Unit's history is a success story for South Australia, Australia, the international community and, foremost, the patients for whom the Unit provides world class care and treatment.

Australian Craniofacial Foundation was established in 1984 to raise funds to support the work of The Australian Craniofacial Unit by:
providing assistance to financially disadvantaged patients worldwide to access the expertise of the Unit providing administrative and medical resources.

Show your support for Craniofacial Awareness Week on the Eyre Peninsula by purchasing a $2 wristband from the Port Lincoln Information Centre, with funds supporting the Australian Craniofacial Unit. The unit is based in Adelaide with regional centres around South Australia, including Port Lincoln, and assists patients who require reconstructive surgery for birth defects, disease or injury to the skull or face. Members of the community, including families who have used the Craniofacial Unit are invited to an afternoon tea on Thursday 5th September at 3:30pm at the Port Lincoln Library. The program for September is now confirmed and there are a range of good guest speakers lined up.

On the 3rd of September Bronwyn Chant will talk about the world class Cranifacial unit based in Adelaide and partners and friends of Rotarians are encouraged to come along.

New member Geoff Rayson will tell us his life story on the 10th of September and club committees also meet on this night.

The 17th of September, Joanne Clark from West Coast Youth and Community Support will talk about Port Lincoln homeless and the youth programs on offer.

On the 24th of September, Rotary Exchange Student Liam Davison will talk about his year in Switzerland and partners and Rotary Youth exchange hosts are encouraged to attend.

and it is a good way to become familiar with the way rotary works at all levels from the club level through district to international.

Bridging the Generations

This little project is designed to help the year 9 students at Navigators college. This is our second year of participation along with other senior members of our community. This year we have Greg and Karen Patterson, Chris Stone, Noel Welfare and Geoff Rayson as well as other non Rotarians attending. The project calls for volunteers to participate in 4 lots of interviews of one hour duration over 4 consecutive weeks held in the classrooms of the Navigators College. The idea is to have a couple of students interview the volunteers which is recorded and the information is then transformed into a booklet type presentation which is presented to the volunteers at a morning tea held at Ravendale Sports Complex towards the end of the term. The catering is another opportunity for the year 12's to do the catering for the morning tea.

Members, Let me introduce myself. I am Cloe Rom from Switzerland

My name is Cloe and i come from Switzerland. I am 17 years old and I have a brother 19 years of age.

My parents work as Drafts person (mother) and my father is in finance.

Switzerland is a small but beautiful country.

My home village is Zollikofen located about 10 minutes North of Bern.

On the 22 of July mum, dad and my best friend drove me Zurich and put me on the plane to Dubai.

Dubai was viewed for 3 hours and then departed for Melbourne. i was very tired but excited

about Port Lincoln getting closer!!

I have played Volleyball for 5 years and also do snowboarding, jogging, fitness Studio and sometimes other activities.

I have chosen Australia because 2 years ago i was in Perth with my father for a couple of weeks and I loved it.

Have you had a look at our beautiful park? Rotary have kept this little package of native bushland for the enjoyment of everyone.

Functions can be booked to take advantage of the spectacular view over Boston Bay. There is everything provided from just a short time with the kids in the playground to a BBQ with the family on a balmy winters day. Two gazebos with electric BBq's provide the best spots for groups.

The native garden area is extensive with gravel paths providing long walking trails.

District Council's Decision for our Coin Spinner at Airport

Re: Fundraiser - Port Lincoln Airport Terminal

Thank you for your correspondence dated 24 June 2013 seeking approval to place a "Money Spinner" within the new Port Lincoln Airport terminal building.

Your request was considered by Council at the 19 July meeting with the follow resolution:

That the Rotary Club of Port Lincoln be advised that Council will require the building to be operational for a period of 6 months before considering the opportunities for their or other community groups to utilise the Terminal for fund raising.

The Council appreciates the amount of fundraising that is generated through the airport terminal by the Rotary Club but is cautious in being seen to limit or restrict opportunities for other community service groups. The deferral is to allow the normal operations of the building to be assessed before progressing with further discussions.

If you have any further queries in relation to this matter please do not hesitate to contact me.

Barbara was born in Adelaide and lived in McLaren Vale for seven years before moving to a small farm near Horsham. After 3 years the family returned to Adelaide. Barbara attended Marion High School and on leaving joined the ES&A Bank (now ANZ) for several years before marrying and having 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. She then moved to Yorke Peninsula and lived on a farm north of Ardrossan for many years where her 3^rd son was born.

Barbara became very involved with sport, in particular Calisthenics, and this led to the opportunity to move back to Adelaide when Kirsti was selected as a member of the Junior State team in 1982. Barbara joined the Apple & Pear Growers Association of SA Inc in 1988 and worked with the Association for almost 20 years.

Barbara became involved in Rotary as a ‘guest’ for many years, and was inducted into the Rotary Club of Hindmarsh in October 2004. She held the office of President in 2006-07 and 2008-09, as well as Treasurer in 2007-08. She has also been a member of the District GSE committee and Chair in 2009-10, and Dist Secretary in 2010-2011.

In 2009, the RC of Hindmarsh handed back their Charter and along with 4 other members Barbara became a member of the RC of Adelaide Parks.

Her other interests include reading, dressmaking and 5 beautiful grandchildren.

Wheels in Motion

RDAWEP has paired with Port Lincoln based Eyre Futures community mentor coordinator Garry Downey to help get the program on its feet.

“Eyre Futures through Garry Downey and Mentoring EP were at the origins of recognising the need for the project on Eyre Peninsula and in coordination with DFEEST regional coordinator found the project Wheels in Motion being run by Rick Henke from the city of Salisbury’s youth program,” Mr Coote said.

“We were presented the model by Rick in Adelaide and considered it natural and efficient to continue to develop the project to be adapted to the region in collaboration with Eyre Futures.”

Eyre Futures community mentor coordinator Garry Downey is one man who is helping to set the wheels in motion for Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula’s Wheels in Motion program.

Mr Downey, along with RDAWEP employment and skills development manager Tim Coote, has been the driving force behind the project and trying to bring it to the Whyalla area.

The first thing you need to do is to go online i.e. get onto the internet.

Copy and paste the following address http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?accountid=3445

This will take you to the Home Page of our new web site, then:

1.Just click onto the calendar in the menu bar. You will find the calendar directly below our club banner on the main (home) page.

2.Once the calendar appears then just click onto the meeting or event shown on the day it is listed and then that event will appear.

3.Click onto the members registration button and fill it in when it appears. It is that simple.

You can now access our new clubrunner site and make changes to your information and play with the site. It is a very useful tool for managing the club so I would urge you to have a go.

1. Open your browser e.g. Google or Internet Explorer or Firefox or any of the others

2. Type into the panel www.clubrunner.ca/portlincoln and then when you hit the enter button it will bring up our clubrunner new site

3. Look under the banner and ther is a menu bar showing "Home, Stories ........" and right over to the right hand side is the "logon" button so click on that

4. The log in page will now be showing, dont fill in the boxes but just below the Log In and Name boxes is a message in blue "Retrieve your password - Online help" click on thatand it will bring up the "Forgot your password" page.

5. Fill in your last name and email address and then click onto the "get login info"

6. In a couple of minutes there will be an email waiting for you in your email in box where you normally retrieve new emails. This will show you your new Login name and Password.

7. Go back to 1. and then enter your login and password and you will see the page with all of your available options for using the site. Depending on your level of access will restrict your access to more administrative stuff untill you need access. This will be given by the web master Dave Gillies.

It was a pleasure to cook a bunch of sausages for the kids at the Port Lincoln SK8 park today. There were 6 Rotarians, Dave Gillies, Greg Jones, Chris Stone, David Johnson, Geoff Reyson and Mike Munro cooking for the kids between 11am and 1.00pm in ideal conditions.

Gerardo Perone is the 2013 Rotary Sports Person of the Year.

At The Rotary Club of Port Lincoln’s 30^th presentation dinner on Tuesday 23^rd Joan Lindpere was the guest speaker who gave the club a talk on the rich history and evolution of the Port Lincoln Times being the sponsor of the award. Joan presented Gerardo with the award for his long and meritorious list of achievements in the sport of lawn bowls.
