President Nate called the meeting to order and began by thanking Melody Rider & all of the volunteers who helped make Spring Obsession a success! Thanks to everyone involved. We then had a presentation of the colors from Summerlin Academy. Larry Rankin led us in the invocation, pledge, and Four-Way Test. Steph Colon introduced our many guests and visiting Rotarians. Dennis Wilson, an evangelist and recording artist from Nashville who just moved to Lakeland, led us in the beautiful singing of numerous songs.
President Nate reminded everyone about the Rotary District Conference May 13-15. Steph Colon discussed the Line Dancing Class next Wednesday night from 5-7 PM. She reminded everyone to bring boots (if you have them), a water bottle, and a towel.
Rick Maxey introduced this week’s program. He mentioned that the club is giving out five scholarships for students who are going off to continue their education. Rick introduced the five speakers who each spoke a few minutes about themselves, their future plans, and how the scholarship will impact them.
Julia Tayler Chancey is a senior at George Jenkins Senior High and is attending Santa Fe this Fall with the plan to then go to The University of Florida this Fall to study Biotechnology. She is also a very accomplished musician and is the president of the Band. She also plans to play clarinet in the University of Florida Marching Band. She expressed her gratitude for the Lakeland Rotary Club. Congratulations Julia.
Marcus DeShaun Hall is a senior at Lakeland Senior High and is planning to attend the University of South Florida. He plans to study Psychology at USF. Marcus was the commander of his school's JROTC program, and he is also his school’s Senior Class President. He expressed his sincere gratitude for being selected and his appreciation to the Club. Congratulations Marcus.
Stephanie Martinez-Tovar is a senior at Lakeland Senior High and is planning to attend the University of Florida this Fall and plans to major in graphic design. She has 151 hours of community service including the National Honor Society. She is very involved on the Yearbook staff and in her ROTC program. She is also a National Honor Society recipient. She thanked her parents for their love & support and expressed her gratitude to the club. Congratulations Stephanie.
Trey Allan Odegaard is a senior at McKeel Academy of Technology and plans to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida. Tray has worked at Publix throughout high school and has served on numerous societies and programs at his school. He is involved in Highland Park Church and also has volunteered at Parker Street Ministries, among others. He expressed his appreciation to the club hopes to one day return to Lakeland for his career. Congratulations Trey.
Kourteney Alexia Salmon celebrated her Birthday with us on Tuesday! Happy Birthday, Kourteney! She plans to attend Florida A&M this Fall where she plans to pursue a career as a Civil Rights Attorney. She thanked the club for the scholarship and told the sweet story of when she found out she won. She loves being involved in the community and her school. She is the President of her School’s debate club, among many organizations and programs. Congratulations Kourteney.
