"Rotary Readers" project
In the fall of 2015 a hands-on program was developed by member Sue Bramley and the literacy committee to assist select elementary schools in their reading programs.  Currently, we are working with the first grade team of teachers at Bear Canyon Elementary School.  Under the guidance of the teachers, two Rotary members spend one hour per week assisting small groups of students with extra practice in phonics and other skills.

In March of 2016 we expanded our services to include Sedalia Elementary School, where we will be working one-on-one with second grade students, again under the guidance of the teachers, to improve their reading comprehension skills such as drawing conclusions and making inferences.  We've also created a Rotary Readers library for all the students in these classes.

Volunteers Welcomed
Rotary Readers is a program designed to assist first and second grade students as they improve their reading skills.  All materials and instructions are provided by the classroom teachers and volunteers work one on one or with small groups of no more than 3-4 students at a time.  The commitment is for only one hour per week for one month and you do not need to have a teaching background.  It is truly a fun, easy and rewarding experience.  For more information contact Iris Price or Reen Gottron.
