August 5th SpeakerOur Zoom speaker was Marya Crigler from the Travis County Appraisal District. She gave us an update on their procedure during COVID-19. They do business by appointment only, but you can use their on-line portal and chat feature on the website as well as contacting them by phone or email. TCAD did not reappraise residential properties in 2020, but you can still protest your appraisal value and have a hearing; hearings are happening later in the year by the Appraisal Review Board. TCAD has now handed the appraisal information over to taxing authorities, which are now in process of determining the tax rates and then assessing taxes based upon the new legislation. They must first calculate a “no new revenue” rate – which is based upon the prior year’s revenue. Travis County has a transparency website (which is now state mandated for every appraisal district). Marya showed the website during our meeting and explained what information it contains. Above a certain rate, the taxing authority needs voter approval at the November election, for such approval they need to notify property owners by August 17th. The website gives notice of public hearings on tax rates. Tax payers also have the opportunity to provide feedback to taxing authorities through website and the website gives contact information for each taxing authority. Marya also took questions from the listeners, discussing factors that go into the appraisal process, the trends in home sales and property values, and the hearing process.

Jim Comer _ Speaking TipsOn June 3 at our Zoom meeting, Jim Comer shared tips for making presentations in person and on Zoom. His top tips are as follows: 1) Sharing individuality leads to likeability, and likeability leads to connection with audience 2) A good presentation is not an “information dump”. No one can remember 8 or 10 points. 3) Don’t use voluminous number of slides with lots of bullet points. 4) Try to create a positive feeling between you and your audience. 5) Focus on one to three points. You want your audience to remember one or two of key points. 6) Know what two points you want your audience to remember and use stories and a good slides to get them across and remembered. 7) Jargon is your enemy!! Industry terms and acronyms shouldn’t be used with a general audience unless defined. 8) Talk to a “smart 9th grader.” If they can understand your content, anyone can get it. 9) Bring the person that your friends and family hear speaking - bring the real you - the way you really talk when you’re comfortable. Talk like you do when you talk about something you’re interested and passionate about. Don’t be a careful speaker. Be real!! 10) Throw in stuff that happening in the world or in your life at the time. 11) Tie key points to stories! |

April 24 - Keisha GillisKeisha Gillis, Community Engagement Specialist, Office of Police Oversight (OPO), explained the function of the OPO as receiving complaints and compliments and then how each is processed and reported to the Austin Police Department. A complaint or thank you may be submitted online, by phone, fax, mail, email, or in person. A handout gave contact information for each of these options. A complaint may be filed either anonymously or by name and the complainant has access to all proceedings pertaining to his complaint. The investigation process: OPO receives complaint APD Internal Affairs (IA) begins an investigation with the OPO Complaint classified as to severity (A, B, C or D complaints) Chief of Police determines outcome as to disciplinary action and/or policy change Decisions announced: Sustained, Exonerated, Unfounded, or Inconclusive Notification of outcome to original complainant Note: If the OPO Director disagrees with the APD Chief, he/she may write a letter to the Chief of Police stating the objections and make the letter public to complainant, the press, etc. The OPO is also a resource to the community to answer questions and concerns about the APD, to promote mutual respect between law enforcement and the community, and to engage the community through participation and partnerships. Ms. Gillis has contacts with and supports programs through numerous community agencies (Mobile Loaves and Fishes, SAFE, high schools, numerous youth programs, the homeless, etc.) through which police-community engagement and cooperation are enhanced. This was an excellently presented and informative program that brought much remarkable activity to the attention of NxNE Rotary members. |

Last Week's Speaker - Denis CowhigNXNE Rotarian Denis Cowhig was the featured speaker for last week's (September 19) meeting. He shared his experiences working with a Drug Court/Problem Solving Court in North Texas. Such courts are designed for cases involving at risk substance abusers, and provide treatment and a non-adversarial atmosphere. Denis is a big supporter or these alternative programs, mostly because they work. He cited statistics showing huge decreases in recidivism among offenders who complete the programs. Denis says while the drug court programs may not be perfect, they are more effective than boot camps or conventional incarceration. |

Jan 3 SpeakerOur speaker for last week's (January 3) meeting was Lu Zeidan from iACT. She gave us an update on iACT, with the focus on the iACT refugee settlement program. She reported that numbers of refugees relocating to the US are significantly down because of the reduced refugee ceiling of 45,000 for the current fiscal year and the dissolution of the Central American Minors Program. Lu said she also was concerned that further reductions to nonprofits serving refugee relocation could result in the elimination of of those agencies. Pictured below, Ms. Zeidan accepts a check from Shirley Dean and President Ben Carssow, for funds raised by our club's "Pastries for Peace" auction, to assist the refugee family we have "adopted." |

Donations to individual clubs, even though the clubs are "not for profit" do not normally qualify for this preferential tax treatment. The "Keyway" may allow our club to purchase our Prescription Music keyboards tax free. Councilwoman Ora HoustonAt our 1 June meeting, Austin City Councilwoman Ora Houston spoke to us about issues concerning her in the City of Austin as a whole and her District 1 in particular. District 1 includes parts of north and east Austin. Her three main priorities are communication with her constituents, education and employment for those living within her district, including related transportation issues, and engagement of the citizens of Austin in city government. She encouraged anyone with an issue to attend the city council meetings or committee meetings and present the issue. Currently, special interest groups have more say than the average citizen, as they attend the council meetings on a regular basis to present their issues. With regards to the new district system, Councilwoman Houston says its still a new process and all of the council members are still learning to relate to each other.

He showed us a number of maps of the geography and geology of the area. We learned that the Llano Uplift contains the oldest rocks in Texas and that there is a buried mountain range under the Balcones fault line. Tom Miller Dam is actually where the Colorado River crosses the Balcones Fault. Dr. Rose provided us with the information regarding the geological formations that outcrop in the Austin area, including the Glen Rose formation, which is the deepest of these formations. Professional Ethics: A Core Value of Rotary International
Austin NxNE Rotary Club considered Professional Ethics with a round-table discussion at our October 16, 2013 meeting. Joaquin Gloria III, Principal of Ridgetop Elementary School described the efforts of his school as it developed into a magnet school combining families of disparate languages, cultures and socio-economics. The Rev. Morgan Allen, Rector of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, related the anguish of dealing with inappropriate and dangerous behavior of a mentally challenged neighbor while maintaining an open and welcoming campus and congregation. Dan Taylor, Business Consultant with NextLevelPerformance, defined professional ethics and then acknowledged that in all his years of dealing with big business, he never knew of a business that taught professional ethics. Then each of these men led a round table discussion focused on his specific profession. Notes from each of the tables follow:
Professional Ethics in Education: General Consensus: Teaching Ethics *Ethical behavior used to be set by a community standard; now must look globally. *Ethical behavior must be taught from the very beginning of a child’s life *Ethics used to be taught at home—but definition of home has changed dramatically and now must rely on the school; Ridgetop begins with 4-year olds *Compromise is the solution to resolving differences *Yet many see compromise as weakness *Politicians are unwilling to see the other side of an issue; become entrenched *Compromise is the very core of the lessons they teach at Ridgetop in a very clearly defined program of Character Education *Knowing each other can eliminate misunderstandings and resultant conflict *Mr. Gloria knows every child and every parent *When a child is sent to the Principal’s Office, Mr. Gloria and child have a discussion, then child must call his/her parents *Sometimes parents have difficulty in the follow-through that helps child understand and deal with the consequences of his/her behavior *Question: Are expectations the same in schools as 20 years ago? Yes, but not the same in every school system.
Professional Ethics in Organized Religion *Situation: Congregation committed to open and welcoming campus and community as a Christian value and has tolerated inappropriate behavior of a mentally-challenged neighbor for four years *Now escalating to dangerous behavior *Speak to individual or family first? Chose family; tried to engage them for support in meeting needs of the individual and attempting to monitor individual *Family non-communicative, no help received *Now, ban family and individual from the church? *Painful, but necessary, solution; we do the best we can with information we have, hoping to leave the door open for further conversation *Situation: Member reported similar situation with an elderly patient showing signs of Alzheimer symptoms. Engaged the family with positive results. *Situation: Helping persons of uncommon backgrounds build a relationship; e.g., marriage counseling or ecumenical work with groups of differing theologies and agendas. *Ignore the differences (for time being at least) *Define the common goal, create a common value system to achieve that goal
*Situations unique to the Church: *Professional confidences and the inability to air all the facts, can lead to pastor taking criticism and abuse from those who do not know or understand all the facts *Question: Why is there so much selfish behavior at all levels of society? *Answer: Fear. Fear of not having enough to meet own needs or not being able to provide for family, fear of others (who are not known or understood), fear of future *Question: Who is entering ministry now? Is the younger generation ready? *Answer: Morgan’s experience is that the young he meets on that path are those Passionate about wanting to make a difference in the world and have high ethical standards; the young 20’s-something are more mature and sophisticated than previous generations. *Question: Discuss ethics in stewardship. Ran out of time but two quick comments: *If a person is not obviously committed to the church, then we don’t ask for money *We don’t accept money with strings attached
Professional Ethics in the Business *General Consensus: Value of Professional Ethics *Ethics have a powerful influence on business success and continued existence *Ethics are essential for strong business-customer relationships *Ethics can create a positive image which results in customer trust, business growth *Conversely, wrong ethics can create a negative image which results in loss of customer trust and loss of business; e.g., Enron *Ethics are based on honesty in everything, understanding [based on facts] of the situation and following the laws of man; twisting laws of man may mean losing the laws of God *General Consensus: Teaching Ethics *Need for higher ethical standard in all of society *Ethics are basic to all of life: taught in family, the same in all areas: never try to take advantage of another person *Difficult to pass down ethical standard in family when both parents/single parents work long hours; therefore, significant need for other options now *All of community responsible for modeling high ethical behaviors *School becoming more important in this instruction/modeling; school and home must be partners working together *Ethics learned the hard way: misunderstanding with parents, leave home for military, learned much about human values and interactions. Bottom line: treat others as you want to be treated *Situation: A law firm client made over-payment on a loan. *Error explained, extra money returned. *Law firm maintained high ethical standard, plus such behavior often means the client returns, bringing further business. Situation: CPA reported that ethics classes are required by law Leader Dan Taylor provided a facilitation model for discussing and resolving ethical problems
All tables reported lively and focused participation in a broad arena of backgrounds, questions, and suggestions. Members offered words of appreciation for the theme and the opportunity this format presented. Today we were inspired by not only a “Rotary Minute,” but a “Rotary Hour!” We alone, among all the service organizations, have an at-the-ready ethical component: The 4-Way Test. It is our responsibility and duty not only to use it in “all the things we think, say, or do,” but to share, teach, and model it to all whom we touch. |
Classification TalksFrom time to time, every Rotary Club features "Classification Talks" from its members, who share information about themselves and their vocations with other club members. It is a tradition that goes back to Paul Harris, and it's a great way to get to know our fellow Rotarians. At the meeting of September 4, the Rotary Club of Austin NXNE, enjoyed Classification Talks from members Beth Seiver, Rob Buckley and Ben Carssow.

A New Path to the Club Web Site! Our Club's Web site now has a new "domain" name! Originally registered as "www.northaustinrotary.org," the new name of our site is www.nxnerotary.org. The old domain name will remain valid at least until March, 2013. Members are encouraged to visit the site often, in order to keep up with upcoming events and speakers and to keep in touch with fellow Rotarians. Using the club directory at the site makes it it easy and quick to send messages to individual members or the entire club, to find phone numbers and other member information. A suggestion is to set "www.nxnerotary" as your "Home" page, for easy access and to keep Rotary "top of mind." In order for the site to function properly, it is necessary for members to log in and update their profiles with current contact information and photos. It's easy, and it's fun. If you've been meaning to do that but haven't -- there's no time like the present! |
