Thank you again for inviting me to speak to your club today! I really enjoyed participating in your meeting and sharing about the work we do at the Guatemala Literacy Project. As I mentioned during my presentation, we would love for members of your club to get further involved either through having your club contribution to the Global Grant matched up to 3.5 times or by individually sponsoring a student or visiting Guatemala on one of our service trips. I’ve also attached our most recent newsletter, as requested. Let me know if you or the club has any further questions!
Our Zoom Rotary Program April 29th was Honduras and our work there through El Ayudante. During Tristan and Beth’s presentation on what El Ayudante Missions was doing in Honduras, one of key focus areas is education around the areas they are located in. They provide scholarships for both K1-12 and some graduating students with college. Alec ask for additional info if anyone might be interested in sponsorship. This info is below….if anyone would like additional info, email or call Wendell. Cell 616 581-1104.

Our Education webpage has great information:

Attached is the FAQ of the EA Scholars program.
The information that's not included is the University Scholarships: The cost to sponsor a University scholarship is $100/month ($1,200/year) - this is still a partial scholarship but covers most of the expenses - allowing people that couldn't ever consider continuing education, to be able to become a professional. We currently have 5 students attending University and they are doing great! I'd love to add more students to this also but don't have more sponsors.
Because the school year has already begun, high school scholarships are covered for the 2020 school year, so anything scholarship that comes in now for a student, won't go into effect until Jan 2020 when we choose more students for next year. So - one could simply donate towards the overall educational program that we could apply in 2020, or specify that it's for a 2021 EA Scholar ;).

This week Dr Alice Chapman, associate professor of history at GVSU shared her experience as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. The scholar program started in 1947 as away to send young people abroad to build goodwill and better friendships after WWII. In 2013 the program was changed to the Global scholarship giving focus to Rotary's 6 areas of focus.
Alice graduated with a PhD from Cambridge in 2006 under the scholarship program.
After that her Rotary connection has only grown! She was part of the 2014 District Conference Lowell hosted. In Feb 2019 she joined the Kentwood Club after much prodding by Chris E out of Petoskey. With her Rotary connection she has been able to give many of her students opportunities they might not have gotten. She is also working with Life leadership and is on the selection committee for scholars.
Have a wonderful week!
