Presentation Highlights: Strength in the Face of Adversity

Larry Gonzalez from DC Strong, a 501c(3) non-profit based in Michigan, visited the group.  DC Strong raises funds to provide gifts, exciting experiences, and support for children battling cancer.  The DC Strong Team works with cancer warriors from across the country, keeping their spirits high, hearts full, and minds focused while they dominate cancer.  Here are some highlights from his presentation:
  • The organization is growing and recently moved from operating out of a basement and into an office.  It has a seven member, volunteer board.  Gonzalez began volunteering with the program about four years ago.
  • More than 50 families have participated in Michigan and across the country.  In the past year, 30 kids joined the program.
  • They just completed their first national tour over 6 states.
  • DC Strong has “Family Days” and hosts activities such as an Easter egg hunt and traveling to Craig’s Cruisers.
  • An annual fundraiser for Jeep enthusiasts is held in Florida.  Anywhere from $250,000 to $750,000 dollars is raised from donors. Best Buy, Pfizer and Paragon employees are big contributors toward the cause.
