Welcome to the Spring Break Edition of the Paddlewheel.  This newsletter will represent two weeks of Rotary news as tomorrow's meeting will not include a special speaker.  The next edition of the Paddlewheel will be published the week of April 16th. Enjoy!

Announcements
  • Don't forget that tomorrow's Rotary meeting will be held at Big Boiler Brewing.  We look forward to seeing you there!
  • A motion was made to have the Lowell Rotary Foundation match individual member donations up to $2,000 toward a clean water project in Honduras.  The motion was made by Dave Pasquale and supported by Tony Pearson.  Members voted unanimously to approve the motion.

June 23-27, 2018--Rotary International Convention, Toronto
If you ever wanted to attend a Rotary International Convention, 2018 is the year to do it.  Several members of the Lowell Rotary Club are already registered.  It should be an exciting time to celebrate being people of action.

Presentation Highlights: Michigan Education Corps

Holly Windham, PhD from Michigan Education Corps visited the club to share more information on the program.  Here are the highlights from her presentation:
  • The United States is facing a literacy crisis.  Michigan ranks 43rd in reading among 4th grade students and 42nd in match.  Lowell students have a 59% proficiency rate and the state average is 32% in English Language Arts.
  • The Michigan Education Corps is a literacy reading intervention program.  It is in 72 schools and 16 preschools.  There are 125 tutors with a goal of serving 2,700 students.
  • Volunteers work with individual students and most are reading at grade level in an average of 14 weeks.
  • There are currently 8 volunteers working within Lowell Area Schools reaching 118 students.  The need is still great for those who have a passion for reading and helping kids.  If you are interested in giving your time to make a difference in a child's life, visit the Michigan Education Corps at http://mieducationcorps.org/members
