March 24, 2018--Lowell Community Expo
Join the fun and excitement of this annual event by helping spread the word about Rotary.  As "People of Action" we have a great opportunity to let the community know how to join in and get connected.  Be on the lookout for the volunteer sign-up.

May 17-19, 2018--District Conference
Join other "people of action" this spring in Holland at the annual District Conference.  There will be parallel conferences for Rotary, Rotaract, Interact, and Rotary Youth Exchange this year.

June 23-27, 2018--Rotary International Convention, Toronto
If you ever wanted to attend a Rotary International Convention, 2018 is the year to do it.  Several members of the Lowell Rotary Club are already registered.  It should be an exciting time to celebrate being people of action.

Presentation:  A Brief Review of the Kent County Clerk's Office

Lisa Posthumus-Lyons, Kent County Clerk, returned to talk about her new role and responsibilities after serving in the Michigan legislature.  Here are some highlights from her presentation:
  • Lisa is beginning her second year as Kent County Clerk and introduced Chief Deputy County Clerk Rob Macomber to the Lowell Rotary members.  She enjoyed serving in Lansing, but loves working closer to home for the citizens of Kent County.
  • There is a staff of 44 people in the office and the county clerk's office serves in 4 different ways:  vital records, elections, register of deeds, and clerk of circuit court.
  • The term is 4 years so Lisa is taking some time to learn as much as she can about the job and then will work toward implementing her vision toward the latter half of her term.
  • Some of the projects the department is working on include:  researching a new land record management system and implementing new voting equipment.  The new optical scan tabulator has great accessibility options.  Election night reporting results will be almost instantaneous.
  • There were questions regarding the security of elections and equipment.  Lisa stated that in Michigan all elections are decentralized.  This makes hacking more difficult.  One of the biggest concerns is confirming voter identity and keeping qualified voter data secure.  Much work continues in improving elections processes.
