Challenge Aspen Offers Service Opportunities to LocalsLindsay Cagley, CEO of Challenge Aspen shared with our Rotary Club this month the upcoming opportunities to SERVE our community in Snowmass. Since 1995 the Challenge Aspen community has believed that access, inclusive participation and a supportive community are the foundation to encourage wellness and for establishing rewarding lives for individuals living with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. The Challenge Aspen programs are created to embrace these ideals connecting, empowering and inspiring those we serve. The Snowmass Rotary Club has supported Challenge Aspen for many years through our community grants program, as well as have offered volunteers to the various programs offered throughout the year.

Snowmass Rotary Awards GrantsFor Immediate Release Rotary Club of Snowmass Village Awards Grants to Nineteen Local Organizations Total Donations of $38,000 Snowmass Village, Colo.—Feb. 18, 2019—This year, the Rotary Club of Snowmass Village awarded grants to nineteen Roaring Fork Valley organizations. In total, the Rotary donated $38,000 to a variety of local non-profits including The Buddy Program, Challenge Aspen, Aspen Strong, Roaring Fork Conservancy and more. Funds for the grants were raised at the Rotary’s annual fundraiser, the Snowmass Wine Festival, that is held every September in collaboration with the Snowmass Balloon Festival and the Town of Snowmass Village. Many of the grants will go towards assisting and supporting the wide-range of benefits that local non-profits provide for the Valley. From youth programming and mentorship to environmental education and mental health support, the grants wish to aid the Roaring Fork Valley’s multi-faceted community. “We are a small but mighty Rotary Club that, along with Aspen, raises the most funds in our Rotary District. The funds are distributed back to our local non-profits and other vocational charities,” says Julie Ann Woods, president, Rotary Club of Snowmass Village.
The Snowmass Wine Festival fundraiser will return to Snowmass Sept. 13-14, 2019. For more information about meetings and/or membership, see the Rotary’s website at Home Page | Rotary Club of Snowmass Village, or contact president Julie Ann Woods at jwoods@tosv.com. Mammoth Meltdown 2014-2015!Meet the Queen! Ms. Snowy as she is all cleaned up and ready to participate in the Mammoth Meltdown 2014-2015! Snowmass Village Rotary is gearing up for tons of fun and excitement as we prepare to launch the Mammoth Meltdown Contest for 2014-2015. Snowy has a brand new "DO", and will wait patiently on the Snowmass Village Mall for all to see until she can head off to the Pond on the Snowmass Village golf course (we need quite a few colder days and nights before the ponds will freeze). In the meantime, Rotary plans on getting the contest going. As most know, back in the Pleistone era, some 100,000 years ago, thousands of ancient animals, bugs and other interesting creatures roamed this Valley. Yet as times changed and climactic changes occurred, many species ended up leaving this earth, but not their mark on our valley. Scientists from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science found over 5000 bones of 41 kinds of Ice Age animals, including mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, camels, deer, horse, giant bison, salamander, tiger, frog, snake, lizard, duck, goose, trout, weasel, otter, bear, mouse, amongst others. These animals were found during a dig a few years back at the nearby Ziegler Reservoir. We honor this history through our Mammoth Meltdown contest where we put Snowy the Mammoth on the frozen pond and folks can enter the contest by adopting Snowy and placing guesses as to when she will fall through the Ice. We will post fun and interesting details to assist everyone in their guessing on our website - www.mammothmeltdown.com. In the meantime, look for new details on this great contest, where one guess can result in you winning over a thousand dollars! We have fantastic additional prizes as well. Additional proceeds go to help local and international charities. Go Snowy! |

Rotary International President - Monthly MessageGary C.K. Huang Rotary club, district, and Rotary International officers began their terms 1 July. Welcome the 2014-15 leaders as they Light Up Rotary. Elected for the 2014-15 term, Gary C.K. Huang is Rotary's first Chinese president. Growing up in Taiwan, Huang was encouraged by his father to get involved in activities and clubs -- and not simply focus on grades. Helping others, his father said, would help him become a better leader. The message stuck. In 1976, Huang joined the Rotary Club of Taipei. And despite the pressures of a successful career and growing family, Huang made time for his club: "I wanted to continue my work in Rotary no matter what." Combining family with humanitarian service is important to Huang, whose wife and three grown children are also Rotary members. "Why leave your family to do your Rotary work? You can do it together. Then doing good becomes a family event." To read all of President Gary C.K. Huang’s Monthly Messages, click here. |

Update on the Earthquake, Nursing School and Leogane
I am forwarding some pictures from FSIL. I just returned this morning. I was in Leogane yesterday. I went down on the day 2. After 4 days of Search and Rescue I traveled to Leogane. I immediately found my friend Evans Cheridor (an FSIL student 2nd year) at his house in Flon just outside of Leogane. He joined me in driving straight to FSIL to find Hilda working like crazy. The buildings are all intact. As anyone who has traveled Leogane knows, the FSIL are the nicest buildings in the city. They are using the dorms as there were no cracks in the walls.
