This year really has presented us all with a number of heartbreaks, disappointments, and also opportunities. One of those disappointments is that as we celebrate Youth Services Month, we do so knowing that the Rotary Youth Exchange and the Rotary Youth Leadership Award programs have been cancelled for this year. However, the same pandemic that required that cancellation has also brought us online and given us the opportunity to reconnect with Rotarians and Rotary Alumni throughout the world. Is has never been easier to bring an international guest to a meeting. I can't imagine Mark Maloney had this in mind when he chose the theme, "Rotary Connects the World." And yet here we are.

Today, we will welcome a Rotary Peace Fellow and two RYE alumni to our meeting. This week and next Friday, we will be joined by our Interact and RYLA students. We will celebrate Youth Services month in fellowship with the youth of Rotary and remember that while the heartbreak of this time will pass, the lessons we learn and the opportunities we are presented may still inform how we do things going forward.

We also welcome to the meeting today our speaker, Dan Prenzlow. I know I said something else last week, but I have a new suggestion: Let's bring our best "picnics" to the meeting today and wear our camping and hiking gear. I want to see fishing hats, baseball caps, and the like. I'll bring my Camelbak. Let's show Dan how eager we are to get back to our beautiful parks when it's safe for everyone to do so.

Rotarians, please do whatever you can in service this month from the comfort of your home. Kent Felice has generously offered a way to let each of us send one card through the mail, perhaps to a graduating senior facing disappointment at the lack of in-person prom and graduation.(And I was surprised as how many graduation cards there are that perfectly address this particular moment.) Samantha Chapman will be letting us all know how we can participate in a parks and trails clean-up project. Cass Daley and the scholarship committee continue to meet and will award eight scholarships within the week. Many of you are making masks and sharing pictures of the finished works. The Flight Committee is not only meeting, but also deep in discussions of how we can be flexible with our event this year. (Having attended a meeting of District 5470 Presidents and PEs I can tell you that we're miles ahead of our Rotarian brethren in terms of considering impacts to fall fundraising events. We all owe the Flight Committee our deep gratitude.) Finally, Carol Bach will be leading a committee discussion after the main meeting today about the allocation of Flight Grants from the 2019 event to D11 projects. Rotarians, you are still doing the work of Rotary, and I am so proud of this club.

Thank you to all of you who continue to invite guests to our meetings. Thank you to those of you who "tuned in" to the Telethon on Saturday. It was a lovely event, and Rotary International announced this week that we have funded four million dollars in COVID-19 #RotaryResponds projects. A special thank you to Kathleen Saltmarsh-Voss and John Buckley for attending the grant management training and helping our club stay certified.

Finally, I know this is the third time you'll read this, but I'm still getting questions, so: We will meet on Zoom each week until gatherings of 100 or more people are allowed. For those members who prepay their meals and have already paid their current quarterly dues, we will be applying a credit equal to the meals in May (5 meals at $23.50 each = $117.50) to your July Invoice. For members who have not yet paid their current quarterly dues, and prepay meals, you may short pay your invoice by $117.50 or pay your invoice in full and we will credit your July invoice. We do not yet know when we will be able to meet in person.

Mike is the Community Relations Manager for Native Roots, one of the largest medical and retail marijuana operators in the state with over 20 stores throughout the Denver Metro Area, Front Range, Southern Colorado, and the Mountain Communities. Mike will also have a couple of store managers accompany him, adding to his presentation.

May is Youth Services Month!

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service.

Rotary International's Structured Programs for Youth Service are: Interact, Rotaract , Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Youth Exchange . The month of May is designated as “Youth Service Month” to focus on all Rotary activities that support the development of young people up to the age of 30.

* Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service.

* Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills and learn about the world through service projects and activities.

* RYLA is a leadership development program for young people who want to learn new skills, build their confidence, and have fun. Events range from one-day seminars to weeklong camps.

* Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time. Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.

* New Generations Service Exchange is a short-term, customizable program for university students and professionals up to age 30. Participants can design exchanges that combine their professional goals with a humanitarian project.

1792: The U.S. establishes the military draft.

1833: Blacksmith and inventor John Deere makes its first steel plow. His company is founded in 1837.

1877: President Rutherford B. Hayes has the first telephone installed in the White House. The White House phone number was #1.

1889:The Eiffel Tower is officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris. The wrought-iron lattice tower was named after Gustave Eiffel, who designed it for a competition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was never supposed to be a permanent construction when it was opened, but ultimately became the city's most famous landmark and tourist attraction.

1847: The American Medical Association (AMA) organizes in Philadelphia.

1950: A 5-pound bear cub is rescued during a New Mexico forest fire and named Smokey the Bear. Smokey died in 1976 at the National Zoo in Washington and buried in New Mexico.

1954: British athlete Roger Bannister runs the first sub four minute mile British athlete Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4-minute mile, at Iffley Road track in Oxford, in a record-breaking three minutes, 59.4 seconds. Bannister later went on to become knighted and carve out a distinguished medical career for himself.

1957: Senator John F. Kennedy is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for book “Profiles in Courage.”

1972: Reginald Dwight changes his name to Elton John. Singer and superstar-to-be Reginald Kenneth Dwight officially changed his name to Elton Hercules John. He reportedly chose the name because of his love for Blues legends Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.

1992: The U.S. Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-49) launches on its maiden voyage. It was built to replace the Challenger, destroyed in a launch accident in January 1986.

Rotary Giggles

An Engineer was unemployed for long time. He could not find a job so he opened a medical clinic and puts a sign up outside: "Get your treatment for $500, if not succesful get back $1,000."

One Doctor thinks this is a good opportunity to earn $1,000 and goes to his clinic.

Doctor: "I have lost taste in my mouth."

Engineer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."

Doctor: "This is Gasoline!"

Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500."

The Doctor gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days later to recover his money.

Doctor: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything."

Engineer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."

Doctor: "But that is Gasoline!"

Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500."

The Doctor leaves angrily and comes back after several more days.

Doctor: "My eyesight has become weak."

Engineer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for this. Take this $1,000."

Doctor: "But this is $500..."

Engineer: "Congratulations! You got your vision back!

That will be $500.
