I hope everyone enjoyed the music and storytelling by Trace Rocks last week. It was a great chance to relax after a busy month of all things FLIGHT. Now we are turning our attention to the different service projects we have coming up and ways we, as Rotarians, can improve our community. Please see the details below about some of the exciting opportunities.
This month, we celebrate World Polio Day on October 24th. It is time to celebrate the contribution Rotary has made in this effort and rededicate ourselves to eradicating Polio. So many don't remember how horrible this disease is. According to the CDC:
"Polio has been around since ancient times. This ancient Egyptian tomb painting shows a man with a withered leg unable to bear weight without use of a walking stick. This means that most muscle fibers are replaced with scarring (muscle-wasting) that is permanent.
If someone had polio as a child or young adult but had kept or recovered some or all movement of weakened arms or legs, even to the point of being athletic afterward, they can become weaker in late adulthood. That is post-polio syndrome (PPS), a condition that can affect polio survivors decades after they recover from their initial poliovirus infection. Some PPS patients become wheelchair-bound when they had not been before.
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can infect a person’s spinal cord, causing paralysis."

Next week is Melissa Hoffman, who is the Wildfire Mitigation Program Coordinator at Colorado Springs Fire Department. Learn from Melissa how to harden your home, manage your vegetation, and what to take when you need to get out quickly. This is an important program for those of us living in Colorado Springs. Polio Eradication As we celebrate World Polio Day on October 24 this month, I would like to again emphasize the importance of the contributions we make to totally eradicate polio.
From 350,000 cases of wild polio virus worldwide in 1985 when Rotary began our polio eradication program to only 6 cases in 2021, it is clear we have already made a significant impact. However recent developments have shown us that the battle for total eradication is not over. As long There is a small region in Pakistan where wild polio virus type 1 (WPV1) cases have spread locally and into Africa resulting in a year-to-date total of 27 such cases for 2022.
In addition, the world has seen the spread of the circulating vaccine-derived polio virus type 2 (cVDPV2) this year. Year-to-date in 2022 there have been 337 of these cases globally with the highest numbers coming from the countries of Yemen and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the same type of polio virus that has recently been discovered in London and the cause of the recent case in New York state in an unvaccinated individual.
So fellow Rotarians, it is so important to continue our support of polio eradication. We need to continue Rotary International’s pledge of $50 million this Rotary year in order to obtain the 2-1 matching contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. To honor this year’s World Polio Day, on October 24, I am asking all Rotary clubs in District 5470 to encourage all members to contribute to Polio Plus and consider a community fundraising event for polio eradication.
Also, this would be a great time for Rotarians to step up and become Polio Plus Society members. This requires a commitment of $100 per year or a mere $9-$10/month which can be made at myrotary.org/donate and continued until the World Health Organization can declare the world Polio free.

Rotary International District 3181 - International Motorcycle Ride
Greetings from RID 3181!
As you might be aware, RID 3181 organizes an International Motorcycle Ride / Drive event - Ride for Rotary, in India. The aim of the event is to promote International fellowship and exchange of Rotary views. The last 6 editions of the event have been an overwhelming success. More than 100 participants from 15 different countries have attended the event and have had wonderful experiences to take back home.
The funds raised through this event go to The Rotary Foundation. We have contributed close to $100,000 to TRF from the last 6 editions.
This year’s event will be held from 13th to 28th January, 2023. The 15 days event will start-off from Mahabalipuram (India) and can either be a motorcycle ride, or a four wheeler drive.
The ride will cover multiple Rotary Districts and many Rotary Clubs. Route map will be - Mahabalipuram - Pondicherry - Thanjavur - Madurai - Coimbatore - Ooty - Mysore - Madikeri - Mangalore

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is type 2 VDPV.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.
We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.
