This week is Small Business Week in the Pikes Peak Region. I’ve been busy being a part of that along with many other things. I would love to have you join in for the Small Business Week Awards Ceremony from 3pm- 5pm on Friday. I’m a finalist for Small Business Champion of the Year. The other finalists are Lola Woloch, CEO of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber and Bob Kittdridge, Certified John Maxwell Coach and CEO of Kittridge Connection. You can register for this free event using this link (https://www.facebook.com/events/319071702584166/). On Tuesday evening, 28 July 2019, I was part of the #RISEUP Town Hall event hosted by Colorado Springs Rising Professionals. The discussion was centered around our vision, as leader, for Colorado Springs. The talk took some interesting turns and of course I had to talk about Rotary. You can watch the video here (https://www.facebook.com/sammiblaque/videos/752800108856880).
For the month of August we will continue to meet via Zoom for our Friday meetings. The board will decide how we will continue in September when we meet again at the end of August. Thank you for your patience and continued support of the club and our mission.
I’m excited to welcome our new members, Jesse Rivera and Karan McGrath. Despite COVID-19, these new Rotarians see the value in becoming a member of this great organization and are excited about the work we do. Reach out to them and say hello. If you have a networking event, social event or service project, get them involved. Make sure you download the Clubrunner app on your mobile device so you can have quick access to other members of the club and their contact information. If you do not have access to your Clubrunner account, get in touch with our Executive Director Claudine Dickson so she can fix your access.
I’m excited to announce a new upgrade to our club technology. Thanks to Executive Director Claudine Dickson and Webmaster Mike McGrath, we have a new online form for new member applications. On the website www.csrotary.org, you will see a link at the top that says, “JOIN ROTARY.” The old PDF has been replaced with a secure web form. If you find someone interested in becoming a part of our Rotary family, send them to the website and tell them to click the JOIN ROTARY link. We have already had people apply for membership in the club using the new web form. More details to come…
The two major projects that we have on deck are Flight 2020 and the Whitney Golf Tournament. For the Golf Tournament, sign up today if you want to play. The website to signup is www.kylewhitneygolf.com. The time is now to get registered! The event is 31 August 2020 and we will be having our weekly regular Rotary Club meeting that same day at the event location. The Flight 2020 team has decided to make this year’s event a virtual one. Thank you to the teams working to make these events a success this year.
Encourage your friends and people who you think would make good Rotarians to our club meetings. The link is at the top of our homepage at www.csrotary.org. See you on Friday!

In surgery for a heart attack, a middle-aged woman has a vision of God by her bedside. “Will I die?” she asks.
God says, “No. You have 30 more years to live.”
With 30 years to look forward to, she decides to make the best of it. Since she’s in the hospital, she gets breast implants, liposuction, a tummy tuck, hair transplants, and collagen injections in her lips. She looks great! The day she’s discharged, she exits the hospital with a swagger, crosses the street, and is immediately hit by an ambulance and killed. Up in heaven, she sees God. “You said I had 30 more years to live,” she complains.
“That’s true,” says God.
“So what happened?” she asks.
God shrugs. “I didn’t recognize you.”

Greetings, Rotarians!
For those of us staying at home most of the time, the loneliness or just plain monotony of every day is driving some positive changes! I have several friends doing some really interesting work with their time. One is working on some fun home renovation projects. Another started a cleaner, healthier lifestyle by regularly working out and planning ahead with healthy dishes. One of my friends has instituted a regular weekly schedule of FaceTime calls with extended family members from around the world. Some of the discussions about these positive changes have inspired me. I'm now asking myself one question every night before I go to sleep. "What did I learn today?" The obvious answers come from some of the research I'm working on. But a few especially hermit-ish days I learned that robo-calls are super annoying, sometimes when the fire alarm goes off, it's just my grilled cheese sandwich saying "turn me over!", or playing the "is the internet listening . . ." game by chatting out loud about random items then watching for the advertisements online of those random items. Basically I've learned that there is SO much to learn!
Another thing I've learned is that for extroverts like myself, the human interactions at the grocery store or pharmacy are vital. It takes so little to smile with your eyes or even greet someone with an energetic although muffled "Hi there!" And of course, there are still many people that are staying home so offering to bring groceries or medications is still a good way to be of service and to be kind.
