I hope that everyone enjoyed the Grand Reveal last Friday. What a fun event and a fantastic turnout of people! The butterflies and dragonflies this year are gorgeous. If you missed seeing them at Reveal, the garden-sized butterflies and dragonflies are on display in front of the Pioneers Museum. We are also having a social on September 15th from 5 p m to 7 pm at the Lawrence Dryhurst Gallery for everyone to see the petite butterflies. Thank you to the Flight Committee and all those who helped to make the Reveal such a success!

This week, we welcome Mayor Suthers as our speaker. I know many members are looking forward to hearing the Mayor's speech. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Next week is Dr. Jon Scott speaking to us about Strokes and what's new that we need to know. It should be interesting and potentially lifesaving. Come and bring a friend. Don't forget to RSVP by Monday at 5 pm.
This month, Rotary focuses on Literacy and Education - a perfect focus for Flight month as we raise money for grants to teachers, scholarships and awards to students and teachers, as well as our many other local and international projects funded through the Community Service Fund. Just a reminder of what educational projects we have funded from the proceeds of the Flight Gala:
3-D printers and robotics for expanding learning opportunities
Support for a wide variety of art and drama programs from elementary school through high school
Scholarships for High School Seniors
Recognition (cash, gifts and traveling plaque) for student nominated outstanding teachers in D-11 through the Rotary "Diamond Award" program
Support for a children's' philharmonic project
Consistent funding for the "Rotary Champions" program that recognizes outstanding High School athletes in D-11 schools
Provides support for technical and engineering opportunities by supporting welding and fabrication programs
On a smaller but grand scale, the FLIGHT project sponsored the study of Monarch migration from Mexico to Colorado Springs for a very interested group of first graders!
Just to name a few
Come out and support the Boots and Butterflies Flight Event -- and bring some friends. Imagine what more we can do to improve the education of our children and grandchildren, as well as improve the local community with a successful Flight Event.

Last year, in Mayor Suthers' State of the City, he talked aboutthe progress the City has made on these top three priorities: improving the political climate in the city by restoring a collaborative relationship, investing in the City’s critical public infrastructure and promoting new job creation.
It is Butterfly Raffle time! This year's raffle butterfly is called Blue Morpho Grande by Al B Johnson. We are asking each member to either buy or sell 10 tickets at $10 each to support our major fundraiser. Caryn and Cody will be distributing the tickets for each club member at our meeting on Friday. I know that they will need help passing out tickets and collecting money over the next few weeks. Consider volunteering to help. You can sign up on the weekly duty roster.
PLEASE ASSIST WITH THE NOMINATION OF OUR FUTURE DISTRICT GOVERNOR FOR THE YEAR 2025-26!
District 5470 takes the task of leadership succession very seriously. Just as your club has new leadership each year, so does District 5470. As you may know, the task is a little more complicated at the District level. To ensure time for the necessary training for this important role, Rotary International requires each district to identify a Governor Nominee by July 1st of each year. District 5470 Bylaws require the Rotarian to be named District 5470 Governor Nominee to be selected and approved by the clubs at the District Conference which will be held in Avon this October 14, 15 and 16, 2022. This Rotarian, between election and June 30, 2023, will be given the designation District 5470 Governor Nominee Designate and will become the District 5470 Governor Nominee on July 1st, 2025.
Please let Club President, Kay Rendleman, know if you are interested or know of someone who would make a great District Governor. She'll get you the further details and assist with the nomination process. Nominations must reach Becky Smith, Immediate Past District Governor by close of business on Friday, September 16, 2022.
The 2022/2023 Rotary District 5470 Conference October 14-16 is open for registration!

The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs needs your help with some fun volunteer opportunities coming up at the end of August, with the 15th anniversary of Flight and the 3rd annual Whitney Memorial Golf Tournament! Whitney Memorial Golf Tournament; Aug. 29th, 7am – 2pm
Minimum of 10 volunteers needed for various positions from player check-in, prize/ goodie bag distribution, course direction volunteers, etc. We will have shift times available or if you are available for the full day 8am – 2pm, please let me know your availability when you respond back, thanks!
If you have volunteered for this event in the past 2 years and want to stay with the same position you have held in the past, please let me know that as well; otherwise, I’ll discuss with you individually about the available positions and where you would like to help serve.
Flight 2022
Butterfly Installation; Aug 31st, 8am – 12pm
The Flight committee will need some help with transporting butterflies and dragonflies from Status Symbol to the Pioneer’s Museum, volunteers will preferably have a truck or trailer available to assist in moving the individual items. 2-3 volunteers with trucks available would be ideal.
2-3 more volunteers would be welcome to help stage butterflies and hammer stakes into the ground at Pioneer’s.
Reveal Day; Sept 2nd, 4pm – 8pm
The Flight committee needs about 6 total volunteers; Volunteers will help with event setup/ moving petite butterflies into Pioneer’s, then during the event 3 people will be needed to monitor the petite’s inside and the other 3 will be helping with other event needs.
Petite butterflies will be moved to the Lawrence Dryhurst Gallery after the event, please let me know if you will be able to help with the final move as well, thanks!

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is type 2 VDPV.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.
We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.

Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that the number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
