Last weekend was the Rotary District Conference in Avon, Colorado. Eight members from our club attended the conference. We had the chance to meet Rotarians from all over our district and learn about the great things being done by the various clubs. It was a fun time, and we all came back energized and excited about being Rotarians! Also, at the conference, they announced Maile Foster as our District Governor Nominee Designee! She will be the District Governor for 2025-2026. Congratulations, Maile!
I was attending another group's event earlier this week and someone asked me how I would describe that group to a non-member. That got me thinking, do you know how to describe our Rotary club to someone new? Would you talk about service? fellowship? the 4 Way Test? I hope you would talk about all of it. If you are at a loss for what to say, Rotary International uses this description: "Rotarians provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders."
We have a great opportunity to practice talking about Rotary this week and weekend. Invite your family, friends and co-workers to our Movie Night fundraiser for Polio Plus at Whistle Pig Brewery this Saturday night. It will be a fun time watching "Young Frankenstein", enjoying some food and beverages, and socializing with fellow Rotarians and guests. The added bonus - raising money and awareness for the Polio Plus campaign.
As we prepare for World Polio Day on October 24th, don't forget to bring your spare change for out Pennies for Polio drive.
Our speaker this week is Derrick Wilburn about the People Of Color Capitol Internship Program. Next week, we will have a perfect program to lead us into the Halloween weekend. Dianne Hartshorn will talk about the Ghosts of Evergreen Cemetery. Do you know who is buried at Evergreen Cemetery? Dianne does, and she's eager to tell you all about the past and the future of Evergreen Cemetery. There may even be a ghost story too! As founder and director of the Evergreen Heritage, Dianne Hartshorn is capable, knowledgeable and dedicated as a custodian of Colorado Springs history and in assisting the cemetery with their pioneer heritage. Good afternoon, everyone, I hope the week has started off well for you! I wanted to remind you all of the upcoming monthly social event/ polio fundraiser this weekend, Sat Oct. 22nd, at Whistle Pig Brewery. Where we will be having a fun night of drinks and laughs with fellow Rotarians as well as other community members in the Patty Jewitt neighborhood, with a portion of sales going to the polio donation fund. We will be showing the cult classic Young Frankenstein, with free popcorn hot cocoa, and candy provided. Weather permitting, we will have the screen set up in the parking lot, so BYOChair! (If the weather gets too cold or wet, we will show the movie inside Whistle Pig, where chairs will be provided).
Our current polio fund is sitting at just under $400 thanks to all the awesome donations each week, and the goal is to reach $1000 by the end of the month! So lets show up for a fun event and help in Rotary's fight to end Polio!
This month we will be collecting small change at every meeting for the Pennies for Polio campaign. This money will go towards Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio and to End Polio Now.

H2OpenDoors is a project of Rotary clubs worldwide and Global Water First is an impact investment public benefit company that performs the same work on a larger scale. Both are headed up by Jon Kaufman, member and International Director in the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs.
Three water system installation trips are currently featured that enable members and friends to join:
October 23-November 4: Kenya. Two water enterprises will be installed at two Maasai villages, along with eyeglass fittings for 800.
January 5-11: Guatemala. A multi-district project for 3 installs funded through district grants. Two villages and one hospital.
February (TBD): Uganda. A large Global Grant for our second installation in Uganda, this one serving residents of a five square mile slum in Kampala.
Each installation provides over 10,000 people with 2 liters of purified water every single day.

Polio Eradication As we celebrate World Polio Day on October 24 this month, I would like to again emphasize the importance of the contributions we make to totally eradicate polio.
From 350,000 cases of wild polio virus worldwide in 1985 when Rotary began our polio eradication program to only 6 cases in 2021, it is clear we have already made a significant impact. However recent developments have shown us that the battle for total eradication is not over. As long There is a small region in Pakistan where wild polio virus type 1 (WPV1) cases have spread locally and into Africa resulting in a year-to-date total of 27 such cases for 2022.
In addition, the world has seen the spread of the circulating vaccine-derived polio virus type 2 (cVDPV2) this year. Year-to-date in 2022 there have been 337 of these cases globally with the highest numbers coming from the countries of Yemen and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the same type of polio virus that has recently been discovered in London and the cause of the recent case in New York state in an unvaccinated individual.
So fellow Rotarians, it is so important to continue our support of polio eradication. We need to continue Rotary International’s pledge of $50 million this Rotary year in order to obtain the 2-1 matching contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. To honor this year’s World Polio Day, on October 24, I am asking all Rotary clubs in District 5470 to encourage all members to contribute to Polio Plus and consider a community fundraising event for polio eradication.
Also, this would be a great time for Rotarians to step up and become Polio Plus Society members. This requires a commitment of $100 per year or a mere $9-$10/month which can be made at myrotary.org/donate and continued until the World Health Organization can declare the world Polio free.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is type 2 VDPV.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.
We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.

In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that the number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
