One of the causes supported by our Flight Auction, is Literacy. It is hard to believe, but more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That's 17 percent of the world's adult population. The tragedy of illiteracy is that those who cannot read lose personal independence, are subject to poverty, and can become victims of unscrupulous manipulation. Rotary's goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.
Fortunately, our club has an opportunity for hands-on service and help with literacy through our reading program at Audubon Elementary School. See later in the bulletin on how you can sign up to help with this project. It is a wonderful experience and an opportunity to make a difference in a child's life.
I'm very excited about this week's speaker, Kevin Knebl. He is the top best-reviewed speaker on LinkedIn, with thousands of positive reviews. We are lucky to have the opportunity to hear him speak. He will be speaking to us about High Tech/High Touch. Kevin is a leading authority on Social Selling, Relationship Marketing, LinkedIn and Twitter with a healthy dose of Inspiration, Transformational Insight, and Humor blended in for conferences, conventions, company trainings, and many other events. Next week should be a very entertaining program. We have Trace Rocks, a musical storyteller, which sounds like a fun time. Denver's Westword magazine awarded Trace Best of Denver honors, joining Dave Matthews and John Denver as the only solo entertainers to ever win that award. Come and bring a friend. It is Butterfly Raffle time! This year's raffle butterfly is called Blue Morpho Grande by Al B Johnson. The 2023-24 OUTBOUND APPLICATIONS are now open, with an initial deadline of 9/30 and a final deadline of 10/28 for our Long-Term exchange program. We are seeking current sophomores and juniors to study abroad through Rotary during their junior and senior years. September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in our Rotary year. So it is with great pride that we celebrate what our own Rotary clubs are doing to support education. Keep up this good work and look for additional opportunities for service to increase your impact. You are having a positive impact on your community and in the lives of our youth!
The Rotary Foundation has Basic Education and Literacy as one of its 7 areas of focus and supports many projects around the world focused on literacy and education. One such project is the Guatemala Literacy Project. Started in 1997 as a reading program for local schools, it has grown into one of the largest literacy projects The Rotary Foundation has ever funded. At least 3 of our District’s clubs currently or have been supporting this project
Finally, one other international project involving our District deserves special mention. I am referring to the work that Rebekah Kiser and her husband Tesfaye Legesse have been doing in Ethiopia in educating young girls through their company, Trampled Rose Inc. Over the last several years they have provided the opportunity for education to over 400 girls most of whom have gone on to further their education and become productive citizens of their communities. The Rotary clubs of E. Colorado Springs, downtown Colorado Springs, and Rampart Range together support more than 30 girls with $300 annual scholarships that keep these girls in school. Thank you, Rebekah and Tesfaye for your important work of empowering girls in Ethiopia through education.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is type 2 VDPV.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.
We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, Rotary has made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We are deeply concerned about the Ukraine crisis and need your help.
Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that the number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
