It is with deep regret that I share the passing of Honorary Rotarian Frank Tucker who died last Friday at the age of 94. He was born December 29, 1922. Frank joined the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs on November 17, 1967, sponsored by PDG Ken Curtis, with the classification of "Education - History". He had joined the faculty of Colorado College as a History Professor in 1963 with a B.A. from John Hopkins University (1948), an M.A. from Georgetown University 1950, and his Ph.D. from Georgetown University (1954). When he retired from Colorado College, Frank was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus. Frank was valued within our club for his thoughtful comments on current events that brought a historical and insightful perspective to a variety of topics. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 6th, Grace & Stephens Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon St.

Let's take a look at what's going on with our club for the month of February and beyond. I hope you take the opportunity to come to this Friday's meeting where we'll have a visit from Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, considered by many to be the father of the US Air Force. On the 10th, we'll have a speaker with an emphasis on our heart health. As we have not had a club assembly yet this Rotary year, we've scheduled that for the 17th -- we'll have a report from our Rotarians who visited Nicaragua along with an update on our club's Service Fund by Tom Naughton. Remember, our meeting on February 24th is the annual area-wide Peace & Understanding luncheon to be held this year at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort -- 12:00 pm, $20 at the door.
President-elect Ron Rubin along with President-elect-designate Alan Gregory will spend the weekend in Denver at the High Country President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) which is February 24-26 (after Yo-Yo Ma ). This annual event includes Rotarians from Montana, Wyoming, western Nebraska, and Colorado with sessions by district and the entire group and is mandatory for all incoming club presidents. Rotary makes quite an investment in training its leadership and I'm sure Ron and Alan will walk away with great ideas on how to lead our club in 2017 and beyond.
Four Colorado Springs Rotarians are off to Nicaragua for a service trip to determine needs for a water project. Jean Feist, Donna Dell'Olio, John Rodgers, and Katherine George are making the trip. They will tour 3 water projects in north Nicaragua, one completed and 2 under construction. The Rotary group will also be hosting a lunch for El Crucero community leaders and government officials and meeting with the Managua Rotary President. They are also taking 100 pair of eyeglasses provided by Rotarian, Dr. Michael Haas, to distribute at Clinica de Susie Syke in El Crucero. We look forward to hearing about the trip and another opportunity for us to do good in the world.
One of the long-standing traditions of our club is supporting the El Paso County Mock Trial Competition with volunteer judges. High school students have been training for the event since September. Many thanks to all of our Rotarians who have volunteered their time this Friday and Saturday -- we have a good number of volunteers.
