I am so excited about the upcoming Boots and Butterflies Flight Auction! Everything is starting to come together for this major event.

Last week I wrote about the grants to teachers, scholarships and awards to students and teachers that we fund from the proceeds of Flight, but we also do much more. For example, locally, The Rotary Community Service has funded computers and instruction at the Marion House to assist the homeless in our community to find jobs. We've paid for Jared boxes that we assembled for the Children's Hospital, sponsored girls in Ethiopia and their education through the Trampled Rose project, and sponsored gutter bins to protect our watershed.
This is just to name a few of the projects that our Rotary club has been able to do because of the success of our Flight Auction. Please help us to make this year the best ever!
Also, remember that your raffle tickets and money need to be turned in BEFORE the Flight Auction. We need to have all the money and tickets in in time for the drawing at the Flight Auction. Remember, you don't need to be present to win Al B's beautiful butterfly creation.
This week, we welcome Dr. Jon Scott speaking to us about Strokes and what's new that we need to know. It should be interesting and potentially lifesaving. Next week, we have Kevin Knebl speaking to us about High Tech/High Touch. Kevin is an International Speaker, Author, Trainer and Executive Coach whose clients include individuals and small, medium and Fortune 500 companies. He's an in-demand, leading authority on Social Selling, Relationship Marketing, LinkedIn and Twitter with a healthy dose of Inspiration, Transformational Insight, and Humor blended in for conferences, conventions, company trainings, and many other events. About our speaker:
Dr. Scott is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at the University of Colorado where he served as chief resident. He went on to do a fellowship in vascular neurology at the University of Colorado specializing in acute stroke care. He currently works at Penrose and St. Francis Hospitals as part of their acute stroke care team.
When Dr. Scott is not working he enjoys spending time with his wife of 27 years, Andrea. Together they have 3 children ages 26, 24, and 6 as well as one grandchild.
It is Butterfly Raffle time! This year's raffle butterfly is called Blue Morpho Grande by Al B Johnson. We are asking each member to either buy or sell 10 tickets at $10 each to support our major fundraiser. Caryn and Cody will be distributing the tickets for each club member at our meeting on Friday. I know that they will need help passing out tickets and collecting money over the next few weeks. Consider volunteering to help. You can sign up on the weekly duty roster.
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in our Rotary year. So it is with great pride that we celebrate what our own Rotary clubs are doing to support education. Keep up this good work and look for additional opportunities for service to increase your impact. You are having a positive impact on your community and in the lives of our youth!
The Rotary Foundation has Basic Education and Literacy as one of its 7 areas of focus and supports many projects around the world focused on literacy and education. One such project is the Guatemala Literacy Project. Started in 1997 as a reading program for local schools, it has grown into one of the largest literacy projects The Rotary Foundation has ever funded. At least 3 of our District’s clubs currently or have been supporting this project
Finally, one other international project involving our District deserves special mention. I am referring to the work that Rebekah Kiser and her husband Tesfaye Legesse have been doing in Ethiopia in educating young girls through their company, Trampled Rose Inc. Over the last several years they have provided the opportunity for education to over 400 girls most of whom have gone on to further their education and become productive citizens of their communities. The Rotary clubs of E. Colorado Springs, downtown Colorado Springs, and Rampart Range together support more than 30 girls with $300 annual scholarships that keep these girls in school. Thank you, Rebekah and Tesfaye for your important work of empowering girls in Ethiopia through education.

Broadmoor Rotary has invited us to a joint service project and Happy Hour on September 22nd. the Broadmoor club will be holding our monthly "Rotary on Tap" event at the Patty Jewett Golf Course and working on an easy service project as well. In an effort to show our support to deployed soldiers, we will be buying supplies and sending care packages. During the evening we will be enjoying fellowship of our fellow members while writing cards and stuffing boxes for the soldiers - we'd love to have some of your club join us! The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been informed of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York, United States.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are coordinating with New York State health authorities on their investigation. Initial sequencing confirmed by CDC indicates that the case is type 2 VDPV.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threat to children everywhere. It is critical that the GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is fully resourced and fully implemented everywhere, to ensure a world free of all forms of poliovirus can be achieved.
We are calling on every single Rotary member to take action and be a part of the fight to end polio, helping to raise $50 million per year for polio eradication.

Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that the number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
