Carol Ann Barber, 75, born December 29, 1940 in Carlsbad, New Mexico passed away in a care facility on September 27, 2016 after more than two years of failing health. She attended schools in Carlsbad until the family moved to Columbia, Missouri where she graduated from high school. Then she graduated from Stephens College, a junior college, for the required two years. She finished a teaching degree at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and started her teaching career in Carlsbad in 1964.
In 1971, Carol moved to Colorado Springs to continue her teaching and become a librarian at Broadmoor Elementary School. Many students, including young Olympic athletes training in Colorado Springs, will remember her for tutoring them in special skills to help them stay at or above their grade level. She enjoyed theological study and also published a collection of Biblical history books with extensive photographs she had taken while visiting Israel on many occasions.
Carol is survived by a sister, Lena Gail Case; nephews Randy Case II, Lindsay (Maria) Case, and Robert Case, all of Colorado Springs; and a cousin, Nancy Barber (Jon) Starr of Denver, Colorado.
Carol was a member of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs (Downtown) and the First Presbyterian Church. A funeral service is pending. Family suggests memorial donations to First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
Calling all gently used coats and jackets for our coat drive benefiting the folks at Springs Rescue Mission (SRM).
Please bring gently used but sturdy coats for men, women and children to the meeting on Friday and to the meetings on Oct. 21 and 28. It’s important to have warm clothing that covers the extremities -- not light rain jackets and windbreakers. The same goes for hats, gloves, and even socks. The heavier the better -- think wool and not tube socks!. The winter coats get distributed through a clothing store that SRM operates for clients on Mondays and Wednesdays, but also at a Thanksgiving event at City Auditorium that will serve between 700 and a thousand meals.
If you want a tax receipt, plan to complete the donation list by the coat collection box at the registration desk. Think about involving your friends and neighbors in the drive, and don’t forget to see if your church’s lost and found is ready to part with last winter’s stragglers. Thanks!
Our partnership with the Griffith Centers is strong!
We provided backpacks for students two years ago, and the students
loved their backpacks and the items in the backpacks … they are appreciative of our Rotary Club.
Now we have an opportunity to have someone (or more than one Rotarian) to work in the Griffith Centers Library. The
tasks would be to sort through donated books to pull out those that would be appropriate for Griffith Centers kids and
organize the existing books into categories and/or reading levels.
By doing this, we would be helping teachers provide the most appropriate reading books for their students.
You would be working with Judy Casey on this project — let us know if you are interested! It probably would mean 3-4

Please consider joining the Rotary Making a Difference Team on October 21st at Queen Palmer Elementary School. This program, championed by Carol Bach and John Cunning, provides a dental screening for students with our very own Dr. Greg Moore. We also hand out dental bags with toothpaste, toothbrushes, and a mirror to the students.
What's involved? Show up about 8:30 on the 21st at Queen Palmer -- plenty of jobs for all -- sign-in of students, record keeping, dental bag distibution, and just general keeping things in order. It's fun to be around the children for a couple of hours providing a much-needed service to our community.

The North Colorado Springs Rotary Club is looking for a few more volunteers for their upcoming Ethics program at Doherty High School on Monday October 24 and Tuesday October 25. The Ethics Program uses the Rotary Four-Way Test to instill ethical principals in the students.
