May 3 Jeremiah Program-Boston.Transitioning from poverty to prosperity

The May 3, 2017 luncheon meeting will feature a program by Emilia Diamant, MSW, who is the Executive Director of the Jeremiah Program-Boston.

Jeremiah works with low income single moms and their children to help transition families from poverty to prosperity, two generations at a time.

Emilia will share the Jeremiah mission, vision, and perhaps most importantly, how the program began. Jeremiah's founding is an inspiring example of how an individual can transform their community by creating change from within. Started in 1998, Jeremiah Program works with low-income single mothers and their young children to help families break the cycle of poverty, two generations at a time. Jeremiah's model is centered on relationships, which its visionary founder, Michael O'Connell, baked into the DNA of their work. Emilia will also be joined by a Jeremiah Program participant, who will share her experiences.

Emilia has taught in Boston, New York, Costa Rica, North Carolina, Ukraine and Italy, in many languages and settings. Emilia’s training as a Social Worker enables her to employ both micro (therapeutic) and macro (systemic) techniques in her work as an educator. She loves bringing together teens from different cultures, ethnicities, religions, and communities together to learn and grow as informed citizens. Emilia was a JOIN for Justice Organizing fellow in 2012-2013. She has worked at the Brandeis Office of High School Programs, Centro Para Familias Hispanas in Raleigh, Peer Bridgers of PAI Raleigh, in transitional foster care homes and mental health facilities across North Carolina, and at MissionSafe in Boston. She now lives in West Roxbury with her boyfriend and their dog Mabel; she has deep passions for the Red Sox and Beyonce.
