Among these recommendations made by the committee, and approved by the Board, was a formula for the distribution to be made by PPARE each year from its corpus. It was determined that a minimum of 80% of earnings from the corpus would be distributed to local charities approved by the Board, and the balance should be added to the corpus to make even larger distributions possible in future years. This amount would be exclusive of individual donations, to PPARE, which will be added to the corpus.
In addition to distributions from the PPARE corpus, the Board distributes the earnings from the Osborne Trust, in an amount of approximately $80,000 per year. This distribution is made as directed by the Osborne Advisory Committee, made up of the immediate 10 past presidents of the Garden of the Gods Rotary Club.
THE NORTHERN COG
BEST CLUB AND BEST BULLETIN CONFIRMED
By Paul McLain
What a kick! Our Club got the D.D. Monroe Award again and the Best Bulletin Award again at the District Conference, because our club works. Every action of our club was measured; projects, membership, donations, social events, weekly attendance, District attendance, etc. were all objectively cataloged and given a numeric value and compared with other clubs in District 5470 in the 51-100 member category.
There is one month left in the 1998-1999 Rotary Year. Much more has to be accomplished. There are a few pieces of business that remain to be completed. If you have been challenged to complete a task through our Rotary Club, your completion of that work is urged. Be sure your activity, that will carry over into the new club year, is brought to the attention of the New Board.
One such task is assigned to every member. Member recruitment. Submit a proposal, bring the prospect as a guest. Remember to read "How to propose a Member" on the proposal card available from our Club Secretary, Ted Newman.
Another task which each member has the privilege to volunteer for, is the grouping of committees you wish to serve on for the new club year which starts July 1. Look over the field and make your new Board of Directors aware of your interests.
Every Rotary Committee is charged with the responsibility to prepare a descriptive written report about their planning and activities. This report is to be passed to the new committee being formed. Give Gunnar Andersson copies so he may pass the report to the appropriate destination.
A TIME FOR REFLECTION...
This has been a very special, successful and interesting year for us, Rotarians of the North Colorado Springs Rotary Club. We have lost a few of our members to death, transfer to an out-of-state club, to inactive status, or resignation due to business/family pressures and needs. We have gained new members who each bring a fresh spirit, new ideas, and without exception, a willingness to participate. We started last year with 61 members, and we finish with 65. We have seen an increase in our Paul Harris Fellows, in Sustaining Members, in the 5000 club, in fact, in almost every aspect of our club.
We have stood and shivered as we rang little bells at Christmas time. We have hammered, sawed and painted. We have dug and planted, cheered and applauded. We have recognized the student, firefighter or policeman of the month. We have interviewed students, chosen art work, hosted visitors and contributed time, energy, talent and money. We have demonstrated and encouraged the ideals of the 4-Way Test, and supported other clubs in
We have, together, seen things that needed doing, and we have done them. But the whole year would not have been so successful, so individually rewarding without the tireless efforts of our President, Paul McLain. Paul and Marna have together, pushed, shoved, cajoled, led, encouraged (yes, almost demanded) participation by and from each of us. Paul succeeded to the helm of a successful and well regarded Rotary Club. He has raised it to a new level of performance, has maintained its stature in the community of
Paul, it will be with a combined sense of appreciation, awe and anticipation that I will accept the challenges ahead in the forthcoming year. It is with appreciation for the fine status in which you have left the Club (there is even money in the bank!), awe for what the Club has accomplished during our year, and anticipation for what we, as Rotarians of the North Colorado Springs Rotary Club can accomplish in the forthcoming year.
Thank you, Paul, for a job well done.

After reviewing the Object, Ideal and the Vision of Rotary, Rex led us on an imagination journey. At journey's end we had identified some long range goals toward accomplishing the Object and Ideal of Rotary. As you read the following, imagine yourself as an unexpected guest, at our club, but 5 years in the future. Here is what you will find our club doing:
The club is making a more significant impact on our community. We have more members, is ethnically more diverse, has a more even representation of the genders, and more diversity in vocations. The average age of the club is younger, the club is paying more attention to member development, and is carrying out more hands-on projects. And lastly, perhaps most importantly, the members are having "fun" at the weekly meetings and are doing "fun" things in the community.
We discussed specific actions that must be taken now (this year) to make our imagined future become reality. In achieving these goals, you will find that we are going to STOP doing some things. We are going to START doing others. But, we need your active help and suggestions. To get there, we need ideas, for instance a "fine fund." Instead of money collected in fines just going into the general fund, let's find a specific project, or goal for the use of the fines. (Oh, and it will be safe to have a birthday or anniversary - no longer will you be fined because Father-Time has marched by.) Bill Black is cooking up some other ideas.
Question: It has been suggested that the 5th Wednesday evening party be continued - but not on that Wednesday night. (Like the Thursday night version of Monday night football.) Instead, have it on the weekend so more of us and our spouses can attend. What do you think? (No
More ideas later, next time. Hopefully, from you. So please give your committee chair or Director your ideas of what we should start or stop. The only way our club is going to be where our imagination desires is by your personal involvement.

The monthly Zone meetings are held at Han's office as it was last year. With vacations and new officers, attendance is sparse. Your club had three in attendance; (ADG Scott Allen,
The discount cards were discussed. Although very successful in other communities, they are not doing so well here. The consensus was that a grocery store/supermarket-type store is needed. It was further agreed to let the discount card committee (headed by Dale Hiatt from the Broadmoor Club) decide for itself whether to continue their efforts or not without a recommendation from the Zone.

Rotary Foundation: There will be a "Nuts & Bolts" type seminar in September regarding the Rotary Foundation. The District Governor's goal for the year is for each Rotarian to donate $100 during the year. That is only $25.00 per quarter. I'll bet that most of us could really make that $35.00 or even $50.00
5000 Club: I would appreciate it if all $5000 Club members would wear their pins from time to time.
This year, as in last year and next year, you will hear and read about the importance of membership. Our fellow member and ADG, Scott Allen, has spoken to us about the need to reach out and invite people to become members.
But in conjunction with getting new members, we must also not neglect our current membership. On my very first day on the job two, that is TWO, of our current, long-term members came to me and said they are ready, willing and able to do something, anything, if only someone would ask.
Keeping that in mind, consider "The member Who Never Came Back"...
"It amuses me to think that your club spends so much time looking for new members, when I was there all the time. Don't you remember me? I am the fellow who came to every meeting but nobody paid any attention. I tried to be friendly, but everybody seemed to have his/her own friends to talk to and sit with.
"I sat down among some unfamiliar faces several times, but nobody paid much heed to me. I hoped someone would ask me to join a committee or to somehow participate, but no one did. Finally, because of illness, I missed a meeting. No one asked where I had been.
"I guess it did not matter whether I was there. Who am I? I'm the member who never came back." Gunnar
