Rotarians Help at Silver Key
A group of North Colorado Springs Rotarians recently showed up at Silver Key bright and early to repair wheelchairs. When they left, 43 wheelchairs were once again made available to the community. It was a great hands-on project that was also a lot of fun. Potential members, Gil Oetting, with his father Carl, and Joe Watson also pitched in. Many thanks to Gil for bringing this opportunity to our attention! Members who participated included: Al & Sharon Tefft, Tom Solseth, Chris Gentry, Gene McClintock,
Donating Dictionaries
Our club, with a matching grant from the Rotary Club of Hyderabad Center, INDIA, recently presented dictionaries to third graders at Queen Palmer Elementary School. Last year we provided money to the Rotarians in

Thanks to Sherm Connolly for spearheading the Salvation Army project this year. The NCOS Rotary Club "rang the bells" to help the Salvation Army with it's largest fundraiser of the year. Many non-profit organizations have experienced decreases in charitable donations this year, so your help in bell-ringing and your donations was especially appreciated this year! Bob Maybury and Mary Cavanaugh continue to work with Silver Key in scheduling new "Elder Outreach" projects: you will be hearing more from Bob and Mary in the next few weeks. Paul Vyzourek and Bob Stovall are our new club representatives for the Champions program this year. Each year ALL of the Colorado Springs Rotary Clubs participate in this May event that honors outstanding student athletes from
How about the job Darrell Fleck is doing in coordinating our concessions fundraisers at the World Arena this year? We have raised THOUSANDS of dollars already and expect to raise THOUSANDS more. If you have not yet signed up for one of these fundraisers, the work is not that difficult, and the money is good. If we want to continue these fundraisers, we need EVERY member to participate. As Darrel says, "Sign up early and sign up often!"
Membership Update
Our club's membership stands at 60. So far we have a net gain of two members during this year and we have 4 to 5 in the pipeline. While we're in the black, WE CAN DO BETTER! And WE NEED TO DO BETTER. While our club does many wonderful things to promote world peace and understanding, we have even more programs in the development phase that will require new Rotary members to be completed successfully. Here are a few of those initiatives: Elder outreach program; Fix up & repair projects, Flag day fundraiser, Confluence Park project; Liaison activities with the CU Springs High Tech Business Incubator; Vocational mentor program to middle school children; New Interact club (Rotary at the high school level). As you can see, the Board of Directors has been busy coming up with the projects - soon it will be time to staff them. I challenge each member to take the time to share Rotary with at least three people in the next three months. Utilize the Rotary information available at our weekly meetings in the form of brochures to help you explain what Rotary is all about. Let's face it, nobody can remember it all! Please contact
World Arena Concession Sales
It has been a busy fall at the World Arena. In the last 3 months, your efforts have raised well over $2,000. If you have not worked an event, please sign up. The World Arena offers a great opportunity to get to know your fellow Rotarians, while raising money for many of the wonderful services the club supports. We are offered 4 to 6 events per month, but I have been committing the club to only 2 events per month, due to a shortage of volunteers. Your willingness to help is much needed, and greatly appreciated.
Symbol Of Freedom Program
You may have heard about the "Flag Program" before. It is now known as the Symbol of Freedom Program. The Rotary Club is partnering up with the Boy Scouts for this wonderful program. We have several goals;
Raise over $5,000
Help
Help Boys Scouts learn to sell
Help Boys Scouts raise money for scouting
Teach Boys Scouts management and leadership skills
Teach Boys Scouts about community involvement and the work of Rotary
Lay the foundation for the Boys Scouts to become future Rotarians
The program is really quite simple. The Rotary Club, in conjunction with our corporate sponsor, Pepsi Cola, will purchase 4' by 6' American flags and build flag poles out of conduit piping. The scouts, focusing on a neighborhood will lease the flags for 1 or 2 years, with the scouts putting the flags up and taking them down on the 5 major flag holidays. The Rotary club will own the flags, maintain the flags, maintain the paperwork and contracts, and raise money for our service projects. Clubs in
As always we are looking for volunteers, Tom Solseth is leading the charge for the club, and can certainly use your help!
If you are not buying grocery coupons from Wynn Jefferson or Al Tefft, why aren't you? Did you know that the club benefits financially? You are going to the grocery store aren't you?
Religious Differences and Understanding
"Rotary's program of promoting better understanding between different racial groups and between devotees to different religious faiths, so simply and yet so auspiciously begun in the year 1905, has met with greater success thus far than the negotiations of diplomats. It has been the way of Rotary to focus thought upon matters in which members are in agreement, rather than upon matters in which they are in disagreement. Rotary has satisfactorily demonstrated the fact that friendship can easily hurdle national and religious boundary lines."
