Stefan Mychajliw Erie county Comptroller Speaks to the Club

Posted by Shefali Clerk on Jul 20, 2013

Meeting at Daemen College-Rosary Hall at 6:15 pm on July 24, 2013.

Erie County Comptroller Stefan Iwan Mychajliw is the son of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants, the youngest of seven children, who grew up in blue-collar beginnings near the corner of William and Fillmore on the East Side of Buffalo.

Comptroller Mychajliw’s father and paternal grandparents were born in Ukraine and came to America in 1965.  They settled in the Broadway-Fillmore section of the city.  The nucleus of the neighborhood was the Broadway Market and numerous Catholic churches, including Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church at the corner of Fillmore and Oneida where Mychajliw was baptized.

His Great Uncle Frederic “Fritz” Garwol beamed with pride when sharing the family legend of Mychajliw’s Polish Great Grandfather on the maternal side of the family (Bogdan) being the “village strongman” that traveled to numerous villages near the Carpathian Mountains.

While attending Buffalo Public School Bilingual Academy #33 and the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts High School, Mychajliw spent his youth at the Babcock Boys and Girls Club and Seneca-Babcock Community Center.

Erie County’s “independent watchdog” has a lengthy career protecting taxpayers following his education at Syracuse University, in his role as an investigative journalist at WKBW-TV and WGRZ-TV in Buffalo.

His award-winning investigative reports uncovered numerous cases of fraud, waste, and abuse in Erie County government that lead to good government reforms that better served taxpayers.

To lead by example Comptroller Mychajliw’s first hard hitting review was of his own department: the Office of Erie County Comptroller.  The top to bottom review revealed troubling inefficiencies.  Numerous reforms were implemented to clean up the department, and a CPA was hired to lead the Audit Division for the first time since 1986.

The people of Erie County elected 39-year-old Stefan I. Mychajliw Erie County Comptroller on November 6th, 2012.  He is the proud father of seven-year-old Mia Theresa Mychajliw, a second-grade student.

The meeting last night was a round table attended by Marty, Sandy, Mike, Bill and myself. Shefali attended for a portion of the meeting and reported on the plans for change to the Ambassadorial Scholarship Program. Please contact Shefali for information about that. We all contributed to the fines and Bob's Box for Polio Plus. Marty won the 50/50. We voted to give the wait staff $50 from the club as a Holiday Thank You for all their attention to detail, and presented that to Jerry, the Head Server. Great conversation as always.

Guy Marlette paid his dues for 6 months plus the $25 initiation fee, as the Board voted for Guy to return to membership at last week's meeting.

Our dinner tonight was a choice of three entrees an 8 oz. grilled sirloin, salmon filet or a pasta dish. Dessert was hot apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream.

The meeting started out by the attending Rotarians giving a brief introduction of themselves.

Joe Bachovchin who did an excellent job with his help in putting on tonight meeting was our lead person throughout the meeting.

Marv then proceeded to give a brief overview of the history of our club, from startup to current projects and events we are associated with.

Jerry Brownrout (goof to see you) talked about his experience as a member of the Rotary Group Study Exchange.  Jerry was a part of the first exchange held by Rotary.  He went to England at that time for a 13 week period.  Today’s Exchange is for 4 weeks.

Sandy Nobel discussed what Rotary has meant to him.  He gave us a recap of how he came to join Rotary, how Rotary has helped him develop skills in his personal and business life.

Dear District 7090 Rotarian,

This Rotary year, through a grant from Rotary International, we have a $20,000 budget to market Rotary membership to potential new members within our District.

We are marketing our District and its clubs online using pay-per-clickmarketing on Facebook,LinkedIn, and through GoogleAdWords. If you aren’t familiar with pay-per-click advertising, you can learn about it at this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay-per-click

For this campaign to work, we need your help. We need as much participation from our Rotary members – that is, from you – as we can get.

Rotary District 7090 Conference Events

Posted by Aaron Stanley on Oct 16, 2011

Dear 7090 Rotarians,

The date for this year's District Conference is quickly approaching. It is October 28-30 at the Niagara Falls New York Conference Center, right across the street from the Seneca Casino. The site is easily accessible from the Rainbow Bridge. There are many activities planned for this year's conference.

Registration is easy. You can register by going to the District 7090 website and clicking on the District Conference listings on the left column of the page. Please register this week. We have to give the Conference Center a meal count on Friday, October 21.

At Friday's banquet, the Rotary International Representative, PDG Billy Settles, will share a theme message from our RI President, Kaylan Banerjee. Following dinner, guests can dance and listen to the music of NEW BEGINNINGS and/or visit some of the hospitality rooms.

After Saturday's breakfast, there will be two plenary sessions on membership. These sessions will focus on the recruitment and retention of members, everyone's responsibility. New Generations students and speakers are also on the schedule.

Dear Rotarians,

I would like to invite you to our District 7090 Conference on October 28-30. This year's conference will be held in the Niagara Falls, New York, Conference Center. The Conference Hotel is the Sheraton Hotel, a minute walk from the Conference Center. Both are conveniently located within a few blocks of the Rainbow Bridge and right across the street from the Seneca Casino.

The Conference will offer you opportunities to reacquaint yourself with friends as well as making new ones. Our House Of Friendship will include displays of the many projects our clubs are involved with locally and internationally. It will also provide fellow Rotarians with an opportunity to share how they are using their vocation for service.

On Friday and Saturday, there will also be an opportunity to participate in a silent auction for gift baskets donated by our clubs. The proceeds from this auction will go to our Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus.

Kate Masiello, Director for Donor Relations

They will give a brief overview of the Community Foundation, then answer questions about the Endowment we have with them, the 501C-3 status and our ability to use their 501C-3 status to accept donations and grants for projects.

I hope to see a great turn out for this important meeting and presentation.

Thank you,

Joe Bachovchin

Pres. Marv opened tonight’s meeting by leading the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Four Way Test;

1. Is it the Truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build good will and better friendship?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Bill Elliott then gave the invocation listing our Greatest gifts from God and how we should humbly accept them and the responsibilities with them.

Dinner; Tonight we had a fresh mixed green salad with walnuts and a choice of chicken francaise (sp) with asparagus tips or swordfish with potato. Again our server kept us well supplied with hot bread and dipping oil. Dessert was tuxedo cake and coffee. Our meals have been well served and the choices varied, so that ourmembership should have no complaint.

Rotary District 7090 Governor Message Regarding The Disaster in Japan

Posted by Aaron Stanley on Mar 13, 2011

Fellow Rotarians,

Whenever a disaster happens, Rotarians want to help – immediately. We have had many inquiries about what individual Rotarians and clubs can do to help in the earthquake disaster in Japan. As happens in any disaster, there are already first responders on the ground evaluating the damage and working to help the victims. Rotary, through its world programs, will be actively involved in the cleanup and reconstruction. The following outlines the decisions already established by the Rotary Foundation:

Diversity and Rotary

Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs.  Rotary encourages clubs to assess those in their communities who are eligible for membership,  under existing membership guidelines,  and to endeavor to include the appropriate range of individuals in their clubs.  A club that reflects its community with regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity is a club with the key to its future.

Posted by Aaron Stanley on May 03, 2010

Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

After adopting an amendment to change the name from Youth Service, as originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly supported the addition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.
