Survivors of Torture: Rebuilding Lives, Restoring Hope

Founded in 1985 as the first torture rehabilitation center in the country, the Center for Victims of Torture works in Minnesota and sites throughout the world to heal lives devastated by torture. As executive director of the Center for Victims of Torture, Mr. Goering oversees an international staff with offices in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Washington D.C. and healing projects in Africa and the Middle East. Mr. Goering began at CVT in May 2012. Mr. Goering will discuss CVT's pioneering and now globally recognized rehabilitative work with survivors of torture and war-related atrocities in the US and abroad.

Invasive Species

Dr. Nicholas Phelps, Assistant Professor and Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Spcies Research Center Director will give an enlightening talk about the problem of aquatic invasive species in Minnesota.  Dr. Phelps specializes in emerging infectious diseases of farmed and wild fish; development of molecular diagnostic assays; aquaculture systems and production; and aquatic ecosystem health. His work with MAISRC involves screening for Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus and researching biological controls of aquatic invasive species. He also conducts modeling to predict the risk of spread of AIS, including starry stonewort, Eurasian watermilfoil, and zebra mussels.

The Sofia Fund has invested in women-led growth businesses since 1998.  The average woman-owned business makes 20% more revenue with 50% less investment than other companies. Sofia Fund finds, invests in and grows those exceptional women-led companies.  At this meeting we will hear from Sofia Fund's CEO, Cathy Connett, and Joy Lindsay, president and co-founder of StarTec Investments and partner of Sofia Fund, on how they have funded start-ups and what is a fundable business.

What can we expect from the markets in 2019?  Certified Financial Planner, author of "The Four Horsemen of the Investor's Apocalypse," and CEO/CIO of White Oaks Wealth Advisors, Bob Kosterman, will give us his best reading of the tea leaves!  Bob's expertise in stock options and execuitve compensation plans have positioned White Oaks as a "go to" firm in regard to creating thoughtful plans incorporating all sources of wealth creation and preservation. Bob has authored numerous white papers, speaks frequently at regional and national wealth management conferences, and is quoted in numerous publications.  AND he is a COLRC member!

Henry Crosby is an advocate for change.  He works to improve the lives of others daily.  As the Executive Director of the Greater Twin Cities YMCA, Equity Innovation Center, Henry establishes corporate and nonprofit partner relationships to promote a suite of innovative equity leadership products and programs at the YMCA.  We will meet at the Equity Innovation Center to learn more about how it creates transformational experiences to build awareness, develop leaders and accelerate change.

The Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer's Assocaition is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, suport and research.  Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and suport for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.  Susan Spalding, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Association of Minnesota-North Dakota will speak to us about the good work undertaken to help meet this mission.

Anti-Child Trafficking (A.C.T.) United

With 20 years of experience working with children, teens, and families in youth outreach, domestic and foreign missions, and as a police officer, Jessica brings first-hand information and experience to the issue of juvenile sex trafficking. Jessica served 12 years in law enforcement as a patrol officer and as an undercover officer in human trafficking and narcotics investigations. Currently, she is the lead facilitator of A.C.T. United, a juvenile sex trafficking awareness, and outreach ministry, of Church on the Hill, Chaska, MN.
