When we laugh at something it can't control us, when we know where we're from, we have a sense of our direction. Truly hearing the stories of others opens new possibilities and insights for yourself and your clients. In this presentation, Kevin Kling reflects on his personal experience with disability and shares his thoughts and philosophy about the healing power of story. |

Saving manuscripts from ISIS.
Apr. 04, 2018
The Rev. Columba Stewart OSB, executive director of the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library and professor of theology at Saint John's School of Theology will be speaking to COL about his work saving manuscripts from ISIS. From an article in The Atlantic, February 23, 2017: Rescuing the world’s most precious antiquities from destruction is a painstaking project—and a Benedictine monk may seem like an unlikely person to lead the charge. But Father Columba Stewart is determined. Soft-spoken, dressed in flowing black robes, this 59-year-old American has spent the past 13 years roaming from the Balkans to the Middle East in an effort to save Christian and Islamic manuscripts threatened by wars, theft, weather—and, lately, the Islamic State. “Given what’s happened in the last years since the rise of ISIS, it’s very clear that things are really endangered,” Stewart said. “It’s imperative to make sure that these manuscripts are safe, because we don’t know what will happen to them.” |

The Dallas Brass & Harmony Bridge
May 08, 2018
Please join us for the Rotary After Dark meeting on Tuesday, May 8. We will be having a presentation that night from Michael Levine, the founder and trombonist for The Dallas Brass, an internationally known brass ensemble. The Dallas Brass has performed for two U.S. Presidents, has made appearances with Cincinnati Pops, New York Pops, at Carnegie Hall, and around Europe in addition to the U.S. Perhaps most famously, The Dallas Brass frequently travels to public schools to present clinics to students as well as work with them on a selection of music. It is in this connection with founder and director Michael Levine hit upon an idea which aligns with Rotary values, and especially the Rooters' current focus on singing to seniors. Michael has founded Harmony Bridge, https://www.harmonybridge.net. The idea behind Harmony Bridge is a simple one -- school band members learn to play familiar tunes in small ensembles, and take what they have learned to nursing homes and other senior residences and put on a show for the residents. Jim Nelson has been to some of these shows locally (featuring Edina school musicians) and he can attest: the seniors love it! It doesn't stop with the music, either. The kids learn about community service and enjoy the interaction with the seniors. Our club has developed some relationships with Edison High School through the efforts of Doug Schmitt and John Vandermyde. Joining us with Michael at RAD will be Lesley Earles, music instructor at Edison. Check out the Harmony Bridge website to learn more.
