Branchburg Rotarian, Joe Horner, received the “Service Above Self” award for his outstanding contributions to numerous needy organizations in his community and throughout the world at this year’s District 7510 Conference.
Central Jersey Regional Airport owner, Joe Horner, has been awarded the Rotary International’s highest honor for individuals who have performed exceptional Community and International service.Mr. Horner received the “Service Above Self” award during the Rotary District Conference held at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Shawnee, PA. The conference, which was held the first weekend in May, was attended by more than 150 Rotarians from the district, past presidents, past district governorsand PRID Thomas Branum.
The Rotary International’s “Service Above Self Award” is only given to individual Rotarians who have rendered exemplary humanitarian Rotary service that embodies Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self. The award recognizes outstanding efforts in the promotion of Rotary objectives in any Avenue of Service and is Rotary’s highest honor for a Rotarian. Though thousands of applications are received for consideration for this esteemed honor, no more than 150 “Service Above Self” awards are given to Rotarians throughout the world each year. The award recognizes Rotarians who perform outstanding projects and give of their time and talent to make life better for others. Rotary honors individuals who have made a positive, lasting change in the quality of life in communities at home and abroad, and have shown leadership in volunteer service.
Mr. Horner, a member of the Branchburg Rotary Club said he was: “shocked and humbled to receive the award, which consists of a gold lapel pin, medal and a certificate.” You can find Joe at almost every function Rotary Clubs from District 7510 hold as he embraces the idea of fellowship and supports many of the clubs with their club activities. Clearly, he was worthy of the standing ovation he received when presented with this award.
According to Branchburg Rotary Club President Mike Forestall:“we are delighted to have our 3rd Service Above Self award winner in our club. Two previous award winners: Dr. Tulsi Maharjan, (charter member and past district governor and past president) and Mr. Doug Merritt a past president and the founder of an international project that built a village in Ecuador to help displaced people, were previous recipients of the award as well. Achieving this award is an amazing feat on its own merit, but to have three members of the Branchburg Rotary Club receive recognition of this caliber speaks volumes about the members of our club. We’re very proud of Joe for obtaining this honor.”
Central Jersey Regional Airport hosts several fundraising events for the Rotary and local veteran’s organizations every year. Joe Horner has spearheaded three “Veteran’s Appreciation Day” events at the airfield and continues to search for ways to raise funds for the veterans and other worthy causes embraced by the club. To this end the Branchburg Rotary will be hosting a Motorcycle Run on Sunday, October 1st. Proceeds for that event will benefit veteran’s organizations that are assisting with the fundraiser as well as the Branchburg Club.
