Collaborative Partnership at Work - Rotary collaborates to help build a science lab at the Bal Kumari School in Nepal.
Building a brighter future for Nepalese Students

No matter how many times I visit the poverty-stricken schools in Nepal, I’m not prepared for the feeling of despair that follows. Basic human rights, such as educational opportunity and access to healthcare, are constantly upended by poverty in many public schools in Nepal. Children are often the most vulnerable, and the impact on education and the advancement of society is significant.

Lack of resources should not compromise the right to education, particularly in a society that has considerable disparities in wealth. Since 1990, the Rotary Club of Branchburg, New Jersey, USA, has partnered with Rotary clubs in Nepal to provide educational opprotunites for poor students. Lack of basic math and science labs at schools across the region is common, negatively impacting educational opportunities for local students. Poor health makes education an afterthought, and Rotary’s investment in creating healthy environments for students in Nepal  is impacting thousands on a daily basis.

In March, I visited the school and school management team wanted to built a scince lab for students at the school. Their scince lab was damaged during the 2015 earthquake.  With the help from the Rotaract clubs from Nepal and financial support from various organizations, we were able to help build the science lab at the Bal Kumari School in Sunakothi, where our club  has been supporting this school with scholarships for the past 20 years.  Our Rotaract engineering student helped to design the lab.  We would like to thank Rotaractor and Rotarian Narendra Ayer, for his dedication of time and his expertize in designing this space.

Thanks to Rotary’s support, simple to build science lab will give students an opportunity to gain knowledge of science and  a healthier learning environment and an opportunity to succeed.  Our special thanks goes to the America-Nepal Friendship Society Inc, NY and The Rotary District 9370, South Africa, District Governor 2018-19 Gianna Doubell for their financial support for the project.
