Today's Meeting
Empowerment Squared
Today we were pleased to welcome Stacia Vong-Hogeterp and Ann-Marie Anie (Yes, Dora's daughter) from Empowerment Squared.  Since it’s inception in 2007, Empowerment Squared has been growing exponentially, expanding their mission and programs to empower newcomers, racialized and marginalized youth, families and communities with the tools and skills to reach their full potential and thrive. Over 150 volunteers engage with different programs at Empowerment Squared and support the organization with over 3000 hours annually.  Over 200
participants between the ages of 5 and 18 participate in programming annually.  And 32 participants have been supported with scholarships and awards to access post-secondary and continuing education pathways.  They reviewed their programs at the Babb Ubuntu Athletic Centre (26 Arrowsmith Road) specifically mentioning the Ubuntu concept of emphasizing human interdependence and connection, quoting the Christian African philosopher, J. S. Mbiti’s now classic phrase, “I am, because we are; and since we are therefore I am”.  They also updated us on the Liberian Learning Centre.  Phase I of construction is complete and they are looking for US$1,000,000.00 to allow them start Phase II.

Your mindset—the beliefs and attitudes that shape how you view the world, affects nearly every aspect of your life. Imagine each day as a new opportunity to set the tone for success. Approaching challenges with optimism and curiosity allows you to develop resilience and reach greater heights. Without a growth mindset, however, you might find yourself choosing the path of least resistance, which can limit your potential. Recognizing your potential will empower you to stretch beyond your comfort zone and embrace growth.

Have a big enough heart to love unconditionally, and a broad enough mind to embrace the differences that make each of us unique. - D. B. Harrop

Do we practice the Golden Rule?

We all know the Golden Rule: we should treat people how we would want to be treated.  The Platinum Rule is this: Treat people how they would want to be treated.  It might not always be the best policy, but generally it's good to consider other people's needs and feelings.
