Rotary District 5180 Human Trafficking Project
And January is 2019 National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month
In 2011, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation designating each January to be National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The anniversary of this proclamation became known as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, which is held on January 11th each year.
Slavery was officially abolished in the US in December 1865 by the 13th Amendment, however, its forms still exist to date. The US is the source, transit and destination country for modern slaves: children, women and men.
Whether from another country or the US, they are all subjected to injustices of human trafficking, including sex trafficking, forced labor, involuntary servitude, and forced marriage.
Lincoln Rotary Club jumped in to help with a project run by leaders in Rotary District 5180 who addressed the issue by creating an initiative, with funding from The Rotary Foundation and Rotarians locally and globally, to provide human trafficking education to our youth in schools and to reach the public with an outreach campaign.
