California Drought and the 4-Way Test
         Books for the Lighthouse
Christmas Trees for Lincoln Meadows Residents

The meeting started accompanied with the lovely piano music from Karen Uilijohn.  Joe Steward led us in "Deck the Halls."  Our usual great lunch followed.

As we started to introduce our guests, Santa Claus (AKA Dan Johnson) arrived with a bag of gifts from our members for our RYE student Beatrice Galletto. She was so surprised and thanked her Rotary Family and wished us Buon Natale. Claire acknowledged our caterer Aliona and her assistants Becky and Ed for their excellent service through the year.

Clark introduced our special guest Elle Beyer who found us on facebook and attended our meeting.  Some long-term anniversaries of Karen and Jerry (47) and Wildbill and Sandy (46) were announced, along with the still honeymooners Paul and Gail (6).

The Blood Drive last week was another huge success with 51 registered with 41 units of whole blood and 7 units of platelets collected. Art presented Dan with a BloodSource special recognition award for his excellent leadership in making it happen.  Thank you very much to all who helped, who donated and who recommended the event to their spouses and friends.

Kris announced Christmas Caroling on December 22nd along with Interact.  There will be two events: 3pm at Lincoln Meadows (1550 3rd Street) and 6:30pm starting at the LHS main office - getting to ride on a hay wagon.  Please consider joining one or both of these fun events, even if you can't sing!

As you know, the December Xmas party had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Our members voted to has a Post-Christmas Christmas party on January 9th.  Thanks again to Dan and Sharon for offering us the opportunity to come to their home for the party.  Claire will send out more information.

Clark announced that the Sunset Meeting will be on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month, 5:30pm at Buonarrati's (Jan 1 Dark).  Julie Lutkemueller's application to join the club to attend this meeting was approved.   Clark will lead the group for the remainder of this Rotary year, coordinating all activities with the Lunch Meeting members.

Our very-timely speaker was Doug Carlson, a long-time Rotarian now with the Arden-Arcade Club. Doug was a charter member of the Honolulu Sunrise Rotary Club in 1990 and was president in 1995. He is now with the CA Dept. of Water Resources. He provided an update of California's water situation, and even though we have had a lot of rain, we are far from being out of trouble with water.  The current snow level is very high in the mountains.  Only a portion of California is out of the Exceptional Drought Category.  We all need to conserve water.  See www.saveourh2o.org.  Doug also gave away about a dozen copies of his book "Me and Him Are Killing English - Speech Habits that Can Doom Business and Education Success."

We collected 168 children's books from our members that were delivered to the Lighthouse (www.lighthousefrc.com) after the meeting.  Afterwards, we trekked over to Lincoln Meadows Care Center to deliver 25 small Christmas trees to their residents. Thank you Rose for arranging these excellent community service events.
