Jennifer Pearce on Sutter Health Literacy Program

What a fun time at our meeting today.  Prior to the meeting, attendees listened to beautiful piano music from Karen Ulijohn.  Joe Stewart led us in singing and dancing the Hokey Pokey; it was enjoyed by all.

Several key dates for events were pointed out (See meeting agenda).

  • World Polio Day is Friday
  • Saturday was Auburn Ravine cleanup (subsequently cancelled due to rain)
  • Bikes 4 Books for first trimester will be November 7 at 1:30 at First Street Elementary and on October 29 at 9:00 p.m. at Sheridan Elementary.  More will be announced.  Please participate in these events - Red Shirts.  We get a lot of PR mileage from the community.
  • Harvey Ulijohn reported that Nite at the Races will be held on November 8.  Get your friends together and attend.  Harvey also reported he needs to know what your guests will be eating, chicken or beef.  Clark Osterhout has been working very diligently on this fundraising event.

ImageHedy Immoos was formally inducted into the club, receiving her Blue Badge presented by Dan Johnson, with a handout explaining the Object of Rotary.  

The Rotarians who came out and and volunteered at the Airport Service Day were congratulated.  Rotarian Richard Pearl did a great job with his involvement in this worthy cause.  Richard provide a video presentation from the event.

Kim Fricke reported that Art and she attended the Salt Mine Appreciation Dinner.  The Salt Mine provides 8,000 meals monthly in Lincoln primarily for children and seniors, they operate 2 Thrift Stores also.  Kim added it was a great event and that we should consider more service for the Salt Mine.

ImageVisiting Rotarians Rod Hensley, formerly with the Lincoln Club and now with the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club (Jalisco, Mexico), described how the Chapala area includes a 50- mile long lake and has great weather.  There is a large US/Canadian population. Their club is fairly new and on October 24 to End Polio, mothers will walk to the plaza to bring attention to this terrible disease. Rod invited Rotarians to come to Chapala for the March 5 golf fundraiser and to enjoy the warm weather and golf tournament. (See link to flyer below.) Rod also discussed Rotary's sponsorship of 40 soccer teams, and another favorite charity is the Ajijic Community Center that has been supported by our club. We presented Rod with a Lincoln Rotary Banner to take back to his club.

 

ImageOur speaker was Jennifer Pearce who has developed the Sutter Health Literacy Program.  Jennifer reported that health literacy requires many skills, very demanding and complex to meet the needs of patients. Health professionals need to learn how to communicate at a level that patients can understand. The program she has developed simplifies the process and provides training to medical staff, and written communications to patients.

Our speaker for next week is Ray Ward, the District 5180 Membership Chairman..

After the meeting many Rotarians volunteered for Book Buddies at Creekside Elementary.
